Chapter 10

The carriage rode in the night, and didn't stop until it reached its final destination, which was at the back of a big castle. Nicklaus came out with Tiana on his shoulder and the other man trailing behind them. They pushed open a small rusty gate, that creek loudly, and they quietly entered. They entered the castle through a hide door, covered with numerous vines and leaves. The hidden door held a dark narrow passage, that didn't seem to frighten both men. They walked it like people taking a stroll, and the other man closed the door behind them. The narrow passage led to an abandoned study, which by opening the another door in it, leads to a big library. The library led to another passage, but this time, brighter and cleaner than the first one. The passage contained doors of rooms and Nicklaus took Tiana into one of the them, and placed her on the bed. He covered her with the sheets before taking his leave. "Do you know her, from somewhere?" the man asked, when Nicklaus was out of the room. "Yes" came his short reply, as they left the passage and went out of the castle. " Where?" he asked again. Nicklaus paused a little bit and an image appeared in his mind of a certain girl dressed in blue running away from him. He chuckled a little at remembering her horrified face, before answering, "Somethings are bests left a mystery, Robert" Robert was still confused but he didn't ask further questions. They went to a building opposite the castle, and went straight to the study. Nicklaus sat on the desk and took a parchment from it. He read the words there, and it irritated him slightly. He tossed it into the fireplace, Robert made, and watch as the words burn. "Another dead end?" Robert asked. "Seems like it" he replied. "Any other leads?" "Negative" Silence roam around them, after they exchanged words. The only thing that could be heard was the creek and ting from the fireplace. After a while, Robert broke the silence. "What about the mermaid's pearl?" "What about it?" "Aren't you curious about it?" "What's there to be curious about?" he replied taking it out from his pocket. He examined it for a while and noticed something interesting. It was a white pearl. It has been so long since he saw a white pearl of a mermaid. With the amount of knowledge he had gain over the years, he knew that only fresh mermaid's tear makes a white pearl. It doesn't stay white for too long, and after twenty four hours, it turns slightly cream and after few months, it turns brownish gold, and after a couple of years, it turns into different colours. He took a deeper look at the pearl, and knew the pearl hasn't made up to seven hours, because of the whiteness, which only meant one thing. There's a mermaid on the loose. And he knew the mermaid couldn't have gone far if she ran, because he would have heard her breathing or footsteps with his vamp hearing. And he knew the woman he killed wasn't a mermaid which only meant one thing, the person he brought home was a mermaid. Having that confirmation, a danger thought crossed his mind. Mermaid's blood. To vampires, a mermaid's blood is the most precious and exquisite blood in the whole world. The smell of it alone, could make a vampire thirst for blood grow a hundred times wilder. Having tasted the blood himself, a couple of times, Nicklaus knew it wasn't an exaggeration. It has been so long he had a mermaid's blood. Longer than two centuries. After discovering the uniqueness of a mermaid's blood, vampires thirst grew, and where ever they saw a sea creature, they tear them apart. Some vampires even went as far as going to the sea to hut for them. And after vampires are done sucking their blood, werewolves ate their flesh, humans sell their pearls and witches used their bones for rituals. When mermaids discovered they are delicacies on land, they all returned back to the depths of the sea. Some mermaids, who fell in love with solid grounds and the creatures on it, didn't leave and stayed on land. When the land creatures discovered this, the fished out every single one of them and ate them. None were remain, or so they thought. Deep in thought to taste a mermaid's blood again, Nicklaus's eyes turned dark red and his fangs grew. He imagined the soft and smooth taste on his tongue and the thirst increased. He looked at the pearl like it was a drop of blood and took a strong sniff, and his hunger grew even more, almost reaching his peak of endurance. Robert took a note of this and was immediately worried. He rushed up to him and asked with concern. "Nick, are you okay?" "Have you ever tried mermaid's blood?" Nicklaus's bizzre question, made Robert confused. He didn't say anything and pulled the pearl away from him. Looks like he's also at his peak, Robert thought as he left the room, going out of the building, running inside the forest. He entered an underground dungeon and took out three humans, whose both arms and legs were chained. Using his vamp speed and strength, he rushed them into the study. On getting there, Robert saw he was no longer there and panicked. He used his vamp hearing to trace him, and he found him at the room door of the girl he took that night. "Nicklaus!" he called him, but he turned deaf ears. Slow his hand touched the door knob, and Robert had to do something to stop it. He hesitated at first, but after thinking of the repercussion he'll face the next day, after Nicklaus snap out of it, he ran to the lion's mouth. Using his vamp speed, he rushed over and pushed Nicklaus away, catching him off guard. He didn't waste time on waiting for Nicklaus to realize what hit him and ran to the study, were he had left the humans. He took few bites of each of them, leaving their bloods to flow. The humans didn't panic because Nicklaus already compelled them to only be terrified by the sight of him. "Robert!" He heard Nicklaus yell his name and he was immediately terrified. He couldn't face him and fight because Nicklaus was stronger and faster than him. The only thing he knew he could do to his advantage, was to out smart him. On a normal day, Nicklaus is better than him in every way, but when he switches to ripper mode, he only uses his fists to think and talk. Sensing his presence, Robert immediately left the study and went to get more humans from the cell.
