Chapter 1: The Day Everything Changed
Amara's POV
There are moments in life you remember so clearly that, years later, you can still hear the exact sound of the clock ticking in the background.
For me, it was the night my husband stopped looking at me with love and started looking at me like a criminal.
I didn't know then that the divorce papers waiting on the dinner table were only the beginning.
I didn't know thirty million dollars would destroy everything I had built, or that the man I loved would become someone I had to defeat.
All I knew was that Adrian Blackwood had told me to sit down, and there was something in his eyes that made me realize my marriage was already over.
The moment I entered the dining room, I noticed how quiet it was.
Too quiet.
Adrian was sitting at the end of the table.
Across from him sat his stepmother, Helena, watching me with an expression I couldn't quite read.
On the table was a white envelope.
My name was written across it.
Amara Bennett.
I looked at Adrian.
“What is this?”
He said nothing.
Then I noticed the faint smile on Helena's face.
It was the kind of smile that made you immediately feel like something was wrong.
Adrian finally looked up.
“We need to talk about the thirty million dollars you stole from my company.”
My heart stopped.
Ten hours earlier…
I woke up before Adrian.
For a few seconds, I simply watched him sleep.
A small smile appeared on my face.
I had spent the last few days thinking about tonight.
I wanted to make his favorite dinner.
I wanted everything to be perfect.
And most importantly, there was something I wanted to tell him.
Something I knew would make him happy.
As if he could feel me staring at him, Adrian slowly opened his eyes.
He pulled me closer.
“Are you seriously staring at me while I'm sleeping?”
I laughed.
“I was just reconsidering my decision to marry you.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“Too late. You're stuck with me.”
I smiled.
Then something caught my attention.
His wedding ring.
It was sitting on the bedside table.
I frowned.
“Why did you take your ring off?”
For a second, Adrian hesitated.
Just a second.
“I must have taken it off in my sleep.”
He reached for it, slipped it back onto his finger and kissed my forehead.
Then he got out of bed and left the room.
I watched him disappear down the hallway.
I didn't think much of it.
There was something about mornings like this that made me forget how busy our lives had become.
Adrian and I had been married for three years, but sometimes he still made me feel like we had only gotten married yesterday.
I walked toward the mirror and smiled at my reflection.
“Tonight has to be perfect.”
For days, I'd been thinking about how I would tell him.
How would he react?
Maybe he would pull me into his arms.
Maybe he would kiss me.
Or maybe he would stare at me for a few seconds before saying something funny, like he always did.
Whatever happened tonight, I wanted it to be special.
At least, that's what I believed.
Later that day, I stood in the kitchen preparing Adrian's favorite dinner.
There was something else I wanted to tell him tonight.
Something that would change everything.
Something that would make him very happy.
My phone vibrated against the kitchen counter.
I reached for it, thinking it was a message from Adrian.
It wasn't.
Unknown Number.
I frowned and opened the message.
There was only one sentence.
Don't tell Adrian about the surprise.
My smile disappeared.
Before I could reply, another message came in.
I am serious, Amara.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
I typed back.
Who is this?
No response.
I waited.
Nothing.
I tried to convince myself it was just a stupid prank.
Finally, I blocked the number and continued preparing dinner.
By five o'clock, everything looked exactly the way I wanted.
Candles.
Fresh flowers.
Adrian's favorite wine.
His favorite meal.
I stepped back and smiled proudly.
“Perfect.”
My phone buzzed again.
This time, it was Adrian.
Running late. Don't wait for me.
I immediately typed back.
You promised seven.
The typing notification appeared.
Then disappeared.
Appeared again.
Then disappeared.
Finally, his reply came.
Something came up. I'll be home later.
My excitement slowly faded.
I had spent the entire day preparing everything for him.
And tonight, I planned to tell him the news I'd been keeping to myself for days.
I forced a small smile.
Maybe tonight would still be perfect.
I checked everything for the third time.
“I'm definitely doing too much.”
I laughed quietly.
But I didn't care.
Adrian worked too hard.
Lately, I'd noticed how tired he always looked whenever he came home.
Tonight was supposed to be different.
No work.
No meetings.
No phone calls.
Just us.
By 7:30, the candles were still burning.
By 8:15, the food had gone cold.
By 9:00, I was sitting alone at the dining table.
I tried calling Adrian.
It went to voicemail.
I frowned.
I tried again.
Nothing.
I was about to call for the third time when headlights swept across the living room windows.
I stood up immediately.
“Finally.”
I hurried toward the door.
But when it opened, my smile disappeared.
Adrian wasn't alone.
Helena stood beside him.
His stepmother.
And behind them were two men I'd never seen before.
Adrian walked inside without saying a word.
“Adrian?”
He looked at me.
There was no warmth in his eyes.
No love.
No smile.
Nothing.
They all walked toward the dining table.
Everyone sat down except me.
Between them was the same white envelope.
Amara Bennett.
My heart dropped.
I looked at Adrian.
My voice came out barely above a whisper.
“What is this?”
Adrian finally looked up.
“We need to talk about the company.”
“What about it?”
He opened the file.
Inside were bank statements, transaction records and documents bearing my name.
My confusion quickly turned into fear.
“I don't understand.”
Adrian pushed one of the papers toward me.
My eyes scanned the page.
Then stopped.
$30,000,000.
My eyes widened.
“No…”
I looked at him.
“Adrian, what is this?”
His jaw tightened.
“Thirty million dollars was transferred from Blackwood International's private account.”
“I didn't do that.”
“The money was transferred to an account under your name.”
I stared at him.
“That's impossible.”
Helena leaned back in her chair.
“Is it?”
I looked at her.
“Helena, I swear I don't know anything about this.”
Adrian's expression remained cold.
For the first time in our marriage, I couldn't recognize the man sitting in front of me.
“Then explain this.”
He pushed another document toward me.
It was an approved bank transfer.
My signature was at the bottom.
My hands started shaking.
“That isn't my signature.”
Adrian gave a bitter laugh.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Yes!”
My voice cracked.
“Adrian, someone is setting me up.”
“Who?”
“I don't know!”
“Exactly.”
His voice rose.
“You don't know anything.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“Please believe me.”
Adrian said nothing.
Then he pushed the white envelope toward me.
I stared at it.
My name was written across the front.
Amara Bennett.
My voice came out barely above a whisper.
“What is that?”
Adrian looked directly into my eyes.
“The end of our marriage.”
I couldn't say anything.
He continued.
“I have already filed for divorce.”
The room went silent.
I couldn't breathe.
I looked at the envelope, then at the man I had loved for years.
The man who had kissed my forehead that morning before leaving for work.
The surprise I had planned to give him suddenly felt impossible to say.
Adrian stood.
“From tonight onward, Amara, you are no longer my wife.”
He turned toward the door.
My tears finally fell.
“Adrian.”
He stopped and looked back at me.
I opened my mouth, but no words came out.
There was something I had planned to tell him tonight.
Something I had been waiting days to say.
But after seeing the hatred in his eyes, I knew I couldn't.
Not yet.
