Kenneth got a chance to talk to his best friend about the conversation he had with his sister over some glasses of liquor when they both visited the bar, which they run themselves, to check on how the business was going.
Kenneth approached Therence, who was sitting on a stool in the bar with a glass of beer, and so he asked for a glass of beer from the bartender. Then he started the conversation by confronting his best friend.
"Hey, can you please tell me what's going on between you and my sister, Ther? I mean, seriously, dude, what's going on? " Kenneth confronted his best friend.
"What do you mean, Ken? " Therence curiously asked Kenneth.
Kenneth released a deep breath and began narrating the kind of conversation he and his sister had that morning.
"Ashley told me just this morning that she's having feelings for you. And man, that's not fair. That's not fair for my sister. And we both know why. But there is one thing I am more curious about. Why did Ashley feel that way about you? If you didn't intend for her to feel that way, there shouldn't be any stupid feelings like that, right? Am I being some kind of a biased brother here by favoring my sister's side, Ther? I mean, I'm also a man, and I can tell if a girl likes me or not, if a specific girl has feelings for me, so I know which girl should I distance myself from. Are you some kind of non-gifted with that ability? Because I totally don't understand why things between you and my sister led to something like that. " He blames Therence.
Therence couldn't find any rights to explain his part to Kenneth. Because he couldn't be more guilty of what his best friend was attempting to establish. And yes, Ashley's feelings for him are partly his fault. So, he just lets his best friend say what he wants to say, and he just listens to whatever it is Kenneth has to say as Ashley's protective and concerned brother.
"What I'm trying to say here is that, dude, Ashley is my little sister. Can't you be more responsible for your actions? I get it. You have to be nice and kind to my sister, but man, don't you know how to set boundaries? Look Ther, Ash is at the stage in her life where she's easily swayed by anything or anyone. And I'm not expecting you to be that someone! Not that I don't like you for my sister, but we both know that that thing can't happen. And again, Ash is my sister, and I don't like my little sister getting hurt. Neither do I want my best friend to be the reason for her getting hurt. " Kenneth continues.
"I don't have any intention of hurting her. " Therence silently said to his best friend.
"Then why did you let her have those stupid feelings? If it wasn't your intention to hurt her, why are you putting her in a situation where her feelings would be denied? For God's sake, Ther, we both know that that isn't true. Because sooner or later, you'll have to hurt her. You'll have to break my sister's heart, and just so you know, I won't be sitting in a corner watching her be in pain. You're my best friend, but she's my only little sister. It may sound unfair to you, but if I have to choose a side, I'll definitely going to pick my sister's. " Kenneth proclaimed to his best friend.
" I know and I completely understand you on that, but if you have the ability to know who has feelings for you and who hasn't, well, I think, I'm gifted with the ability to love Ash the way I shouldn't be loving her, nor am I expected to. And man, can you blame me if there are times when I feel like giving in to these stupid feelings I have for your little sister? " Therence defended
"Still, you must have control over yourself. You have to be more responsible enough for any actions and decisions you have to make in the future, because that is what you are supposed and expected to be. And I don't think my sister had anything to do with that. Now, you have to do something about it, Ther. As Ashley's brother and as your best friend, I'm asking you to do something about my sister's feelings for you, which you will have to deny in the future. " Kenneth demanded Therence.
" What exactly do you want me to do, Ken? Therence asked Kenneth.
" I don't know, Ther. I just don't want Ash to be in pain because of what she feels for you. I just don't want my little sister to have an unrequited crush on my best friend. Ashley is such an innocent and sweet girl, and I really don't know how she's going to handle that. " He said worriedly to his best friend. Then he continues. " If only you were allowed to make decision for yourself, things could have been a little better and less complicated than this. Sadly, you're not. So tell me, Ther, what else can we do about your situation? I really don't want to sound unfair because I'm also your best friend and I know the real deal about your situation. For the same reason, I'm so afraid for Ashley. "
"I know, Ken. But other than this, I don't think we're left with any better ways to change anything. I think the only thing we can do now is to just let it be and hope for the best and for Ashley to be okay with it. " Therence replied helplessly to his best friend.
Being torn between a sister and a best friend should have been painfully hard, but being torn between one's obligation to the family and his feelings must have been equally tough, for both options are essential to one's happiness.
