Au stood erect and blinked her eyes twice like she was trying to clear her vision or clear a thought away from her head. Brawn wanted to ask Au if she hurt herself from the earlier stagger but his voice seemed to have left him. Au did not say a word to both of them and hurried straight into the building.
Brawn heard someone in front of Sparkle saying in a low voice as Au left, " She is so beautiful."
Brawn looked around and found no one else in front of Sparkle except him. He discovered that the words had come right out of his mouth.
Sparkle looked at Brawn with an expressionless face but he did not notice her. He was still blown away by the moment.
Throughout that day at work, the memory of him holding Au in his arms kept flashing in his head. He anticipated Au's coming to his section for her routine checks but she did not come neither did Sparkle which was quite unusual. Au came to his section often to see how things were going over there that was why her non-appearance at his section was strange. At the close of work, he heard that she had left almost immediately after the break. Brawn began to wonder why Sparkle did not do the supervision on her behalf. He knew that anytime Au was not around, Sparkle came to see the status of work at his section, smiling and waving to him when she came. He dismissed her not coming to his section as her being busy or tired.
Sparkle and Brawn headed to the pack house after the close of work as they usually did when Au left early but that day was quite different. Sparkle did not engage in any conversation with Brawn but walked faster than she normally did. Brawn tried regularly to catch up with her pace but often lagged because she was using her wolf's strength. Not long, Brawn broke into a run as she was walking too fast for him to catch up.
"Hey, Sparkle! wait up! " He shouted to her as he ran towards her position.
She stopped and waited for him without turning in his direction.
"You are walking too fast. I can hardly keep up with your pace," Brawn complained, panting when he got to her.
She looked at him with an expressionless face and said, "I want to get to the pack house early so that I can prepare the orange juice I wanted to prepare yesterday evening.".
Brawn noticed that she did not have the regular bright smile she often had most times they spoke
He said, "Is that why you are like this? We concluded yesterday night that you won the challenge and I am to help you out in the juice making. So . . . no need to be in a hurry . . ." He paused and added, "You should put a smile on your face too."
"You don't need to worry. I have decided to do it myself," she said ignoring Brawn's advice on smiling.
"You said that the big bag you brought in yesterday was filled with oranges. That means there are a lot of oranges for you to press. I will join you. Besides I was the one who stopped you from making the orange juice yesterday evening. Don't bother trying to talk me out of it because I am not going to back down," Brawn said as they started walking at a normal pace.
Sparkle did not say anything but kept walking.
Brawn knew that her attitude was strange and her countenance was unusual so he asked, "You don't seem to be happy. What is the matter? Is it still the orange juice or something else?"
"I am fine. I am just a little bit stressed from today's work," she said breaking a forced smile.
"That is the more reason I should help you with making the orange so that you can have enough time to rest," Brawn said.
Brawn wanted to bring up other discussion topics but decided not to stress it as Sparkle was clearly not in the mood for that and also they were approaching the pack house.
When they got into the pack house, Sparkle went into the pack building while Brawn went into his room to freshen up. When he was done, he put on some sleeveless top and a knicker. He packed his hair into a ponytail and went out into the compound to take some air. He sat on a stone by the side of the pack house, reminiscing his earlier encounter with Au that day. His moment with her was only for a while but it felt like forever to Brawn. He was so grateful that she tripped. He wished every day was like that day. He was motivated to keep on enduring in his efforts to get close to her. He felt she was worth all his efforts. He wished she could fall in love with him as he had already fallen deeply. He brought himself back from his fantasy remembering that he was the lowest ranked werewolf in the pack and wishing that she fell in love with him was asking for the impossible.
At that moment, he wished his parents were still alive. He would have been bestowed with the due honour and respect he deserved. He thought about how low he had become and shook his head . . . a whole descendant of the great Alpha Brio . . . a Brio wolf from both paternal and maternal side . . . a pure Brio wolf reduced to nothing!
While he was going through his thought process, Nathan passed by and noticed him sitting alone accompanied by only his thoughts.
He walked over to him, placed his hand on his shoulder and asked, "Hey Raw, are you good?"
Brawn was brought back into reality by Nathan's words and hands. He looked up at Nathan and said, "Yes. . .Yes, I am good. Why?"
"You looked a bit troubled a while ago," Nathan said as he made to sit down beside Brawn. "If it is something you want to share, I am all ears," he announced.
"Well, it is nothing serious. You know, work can be a bit stressful," Brawn said staring at nothing in particular ". . .especially when your boss is Au," he added and chuckled.
"She is still rude to you?" Nathan asked.
"It seems to worsen per time," Brawn replied.
"Don't worry, it would fade away soon . . . probably when the incident of her window is done with," Nathan said as he encouraged Brawn with a pat on the back.
"I hope so," Brawn said and let out a sigh. After that, he said, "I have been meaning to ask you this. When you met your mate, how did you know she was the one?"
Nathan was taken aback by Brawn's question which was totally unrelated to the topic they were discussing. He went silent for a little moment and let out a big grin. He hit Brawn playfully with his elbow and said, "I knew it!"
Brawn looked at Nathan with an expression showing that he did not get what Nathan meant. He said in a confused tone, "I am lost here. What is this thing that you know that is related to me?"
"I knew it was something else other than work! It is the ladies, of course! Not work!" Nathan said smirking and hitting Brawn playfully with his elbow again twice.
Brawn laughed as he felt he was beginning to understand what Nathan was saying."Ha Ha Ha" He said amidst his laughter, "I don't know what you are thinking but I can assure you that it is far from it."
"It's no news, Raw! We all see how the lady omegas giggle when you talk to them, pass by or just wave in greeting," Nathan said still holding his grin.
"Ha Ha Ha." Brawn laughed again, "I haven't noticed all these things you are saying. So I guess it is fresh news."
"Are you shitting me or you seriously don't notice all these?" Nathan looked at him with his eyebrows raised and his eyes focused on Brawn. His grin was drying up.
Brawn wanted to laugh again but noticed that Nathan was serious. He extinguished the laughter in his throat and said, "Seriously? I mean, I have noticed a few but they are really nothing but just friendly gestures."
"Hmmm . . . friendly indeed. Including the evident blushes that appeared on Sparkle's cheeks when you held her hand yesterday evening as we all sat to chat? Her constant glance at you too?" Nathan said and the pitch of his voice hiked a bit. "I guess all those are friendly gestures too. I wonder why I don't get such from any of the omegas . . . maybe I don't have friends," Nathan added wryly.
