The Lazy One

The next day, Brawn finished his chore and prepared to follow Au to work. He had mixed feelings of happiness and nervousness. Happiness strangely because he was going to be seeing Au all day even though he felt she did not like him. The hunters who mocked him were not going to be seeing him for a month too. Nervousness because he did not know if he was going to do things rightly. He stood at the entrance of the pack house in a long sleeve shirt which he folded the sleeves slightly above his wrist and a pair of trousers, waiting for Au to come out. His hair was not bonded but well combed and loose. He ignored every animal that passed him by while he was waiting. He had decided he was not going to try to chase any animal that week even as little as the flies that perched on his face. He was being most careful because he saw it as they came to make him break something else or get him into bigger trouble. Sparkle stood in front of Au who start on her chair with her hands folded and her face turned away from Sparkle. "I am sorry for making you look bad yesterday, ma'am. I . . . I didn't mean it to seem that way, ma'am. I was wrong and I am deeply sorry, ma'am," Sparkle said slowly in an apologetic tone. Au adjusted herself on the chair and turned her face to the other side not giving Sparkle a response. "What can I do to make it up to you, ma'am?" Sparkle persuaded. "You can start with stop making me look like a heartless b***h in front of others," Au said still not looking at Sparkle. "I promise not to do that again, ma'am. Is there any other thing I can do to appease you, ma'am?" Sparkle said. Au looked at Sparkle from the corner of her eyes, adjusted herself again and said, " You promise, right?" "Yes, I promise," Sparkle said. Au turned to Sparkle and said, "I am not a bad person nor am I wicked. If I was, I would still report to the Alpha and not agree to fix the window." Sparkle nodded and Au continued, "Besides, the reason I was concerned when you said you would pay with him was that I was concerned about you. That is was why . . . You see, I know what I am doing." Sparkle nodded and said with a smile on her face, "I know you are a nice person who is always concerned about me and I appreciate that, ma'am. Like I said earlier, ma'am, I won't do such again." Au stood up and the two ladies held each other in a hug. When they released each other, Au said, "Let us go to the factory. The other workers would be waiting for us." Not long after, Au was out in a beautiful green gown that ended at her knee level. Her glowing skin seemed to make the sun hide behind the clouds in intimidation. The sweet smell of her perfume filled Brawn's nose. Her hair was flowing and moisturized with her hair oil. Behind her was Sparkle who was not looking bad either. She wore a long-sleeved yellow gown which also stopped at knee level. Au did not say a word to Brawn when she came out of the pack house. Au's carriage rode to the front of the pack building and Au entered it with Sparkle. Brawn wondered if he was going to trek to the factory because Au did not tell him where he was to stay nor did she give him a horse to ride. He knew he could not enter into her carriage and asking any of Au's gammas for a lift did not seem to him like a good idea. He stood wondering what to do when he heard Au say from her carriage to him. "What are you waiting for? We have not got all day here!" "I don't know where to sit, ma'am." "Sit with the carriage driver." He quickly climbed up to sit with him. He was relieved that he was not going to be chasing after the carriage after all. The carriage driver whipped the horses gently and they started pulling the carriage. Au's gammas followed through riding by the side of the carriage. As they got to the oil factory, Au and Sparkle came down from the carriage. The factory was not very big. It was a bungalow with large windows around it. It had a big compound with some flowers planted around. As Au entered the building, a few of her gammas took their positions at the entrance manning the entrance while the rest went in with Au. They took their positions at strategic places. Two of them escorted Au around. Brawn followed Au and Sparkle like a dog would follow its owner. There were quite a number of boxes arranged in the first room they walked into. It had a few werewolves around who greeted Au as she passed them. When they got to the next room, Brawn noticed that there were quite a number of female werewolves mixing containers of oil with flower extracts. Brawn found it difficult to believe that werewolves get paid for doing such an "easy" task. Compared to the chores Brawn did at the pack house, he felt the task he met them performing was easy. He thought to himself that he could do it all day and not get tired. To him, doing such a task in the oil factory would be an escape from tiring chores in the pack house. He waited patiently for Au to finish addressing the workers in the room then he asked, "When do I start, ma'am?" "Now, of course," She replied. He picked a container of oil and wanted to join the ladies but Au stopped him with a question. "What do you want to do?" Puzzled by her question, he answered, "Start working, ma'am." He wondered if she thought he was about to steal as it was not strange if she thought so. "Here? No, this is not where you will be working. Follow me, let me show you where your service will be needed," Au said with some elements of surprise in her voice. Brawn dropped the container and followed her. He was wondering where she was taking him to. They entered another room where some werewolves were pressing out extracts from flowers. Brawn said to himself that the task was still fair enough. Sparkle sat with them but Au kept on walking and Brawn followed her. He had thought that the ladies were divided into groups and Au was taking him to work in another group but had noticed when he got to that room that there were sections in the factory. They got to the door behind the building and Brawn wondered why they were going outside. When they got out of the building, Au kept walking. Brawn ran out of guesses and decided that he was going to allow himself to be surprised. She got to a large shed in the compound where some male werewolves were boiling and pounding oil seeds. She went under the shed and stopped. Everyone gave their greetings to her and she responded. She turned to Brawn and said moving her right in the air, "So . . . Here we are! This is where you will be working," Turning to the workers, she introduced, "Hey guys, this is Raw. He will be working here with us for a month." and everyone made different gestures showing him that he was welcome. They were so busy so they did not want to waste time talking. "So, you are to join them here, " she finally said to Brawn and started walking back to the factory building. Brawn examined the environment. His eyes went to the heap of olive seeds gathered in large bowls. These seeds were to be were to boiled, pounded and pressed to get the oil out. He scanned through the werewolves standing and monitoring the big pot of boiling seeds in water placed on top of burning fire woods. There were some werewolves ensuring the fire did not go out by feeding fire woods into the fire. Some were pounding, while others were pressing. He noticed that all of them were sweating. He was not sure if it was the fire that was making them sweat or the intensity of the work. He knew very well that whatever made the werewolves whose wolves had emerged to sweat, would drain him whose wolf had not emerged yet, of strength. He immediately understood why the pack law only permitted those whose wolf had emerged to start or join a trade. He quickly ran after Au and complained, "But ma'am, I . . . I . . . I am sorry to say but my wolf has not yet emerged. I think this work is a bit too hard for me, ma'am." He had learnt from Sparkle to lay complaints if the task given to him was beyond him. She stopped and eyed him in surprise. Her amber eyes narrowed and Brawn took his omega stance. She said to him, "Is this you being lazy or you being a baby? . . . I must say, you have really got some guts to run after me to stay this nonsense." "What I meant ma'am is that –" Brawn tried to explain but as usual, Au did not let him finish. "Okay no problem, you know what? You can go home and take a nap while I speak to the Alpha about you breaking my window," She snapped. "But ma'am-" "But what?! I am listening!" Her voice rose in intensity and pitch. "Nothing, ma'am . . . There will be no need for that, I will get to work," Brawn said. "Very good. Now get to work and stop this whining about not having an emergent wolf! I too, have not had my first shift but I don't go around yammering like you do. So if you feel you are useless here, you can please take your leave!" She barked. " And before I forget, nothing should get broken or missing while you are at it and do not bump into anyone here. . .since those have proven to be what you do with ease even though your wolf has not emerged," Au said and eyed him one more time as she left. Brawn wondered why Au had been harsh to him since he first saw her. He wondered if it was because the bases of their meetings were mostly ugly situations or maybe it was because she is just a b***h. Nathan had said she was a sweet young lady but he could not see an atom of sweetness in her. He did not see anything wrong in what he said to her but she chose to shout all over the place as he had told the head omega the same before. She even went ahead to compare herself with him. Her wolf had not emerged but she did almost nothing for herself. Sparkle and the other omegas were there to do every chore for her. To him, she was the lazy one. He was beginning to feel so unlucky for falling in love with a rude b***h like her. He obviously disliked the way she treated him. He sighed and shrugged. As he stood there watching Au disappear into the building, a werewolf shouted to him, "Hey! You over there! Are you going to stand there admiring her from behind or you are going to join us in working?! We need a helping hand here!" Brawn wondered if that was how it appeared –that he was admiring her from behind. He observed his stance and saw that anyone who saw him would think the same way the worker thought. He quickly ran to meet the workers before they drew other inferences from the situation. "Pour this out for me. . .careful with it, it is hot!" A werewolf instructed. He was a lot older than Brawn and seemed to have been working there for some time. When Brawn was done, he was asked to join in the pounding of the oil seeds. It needed no particular skill or experience so they felt it would be better if he started from there. As they were pounding, a worker raised a work song which the others joined in, using the sound the pestle made on hitting the mortar as a rhythm for the song. He sang a line and the others chorused a particular line repeatedly. "Heeeeeeey I once saw a werewolf on a treeeee!" "Heeeeeeey I once saw a werewolf on a treeeee!" "Heeeeeee had a flies perching on his heeeaad!" "Heeeeeeey I once saw a werewolf on a treeeee!" "Wheeeeen I called out, he pretended to be deeeaad!" "Heeeeeeey I once saw a werewolf on a treeeee!" . . .
