The Alpha of The Ceremony

"You are doing a great job in handling the sub-pack. I must commend you on that," Alpha Veer said to Beta Sinew in his deep baritone voice as the pups were coming to the centre of the sub-pack. "Ha Ha Ha. You are the Alpha and every progress in the sub-pack is associated with you. Without your assistance, none of this would have been possible," Beta Sinew said in his equally deep voice as he lavished the Alpha with praises. "There are a lot of them having their first shift tonight. My pack has grown," Alpha Veer said looking at the pups coming towards the centre. He had a smile on his face. "Not only has your pack increased in population, but it has also waxed stronger and more powerful under your rule. Every pack around wants to be at peace with you because only the mention of your name spells authority," Beta Sinew said in addition to his praise of the Alpha. Alpha Veer said smirking loftily, "They don't have a choice. Do they?" and they two friends laughed. Meanwhile, Rex handed Brawn the shifting attire he managed to save during its distribution and went to join the moving file. Brawn quickly ran to the changing room, removed his clothes, flung them to a corner, put on the shifting attire and ran to join the line. When he joined them, he was the last on the line. There were twenty-six boys and forty-five girls who were to be shifting that night. The girls were usually more than the boys because most of the boys had the mischievous attitude of delaying their shifting till they were twenty in order to run away from early responsibilities. As they all got to the centre, they spread out and went on their knees. The compound was a big one so there was a lot of space at the centre for them to spread out. The werewolves around were clapping, shouting, whistling and cheering them. Salutaries went over to them and administered to them each some herbal mixture to drink. It was to help make the shifting less painful as first shifting could be excruciating. It was also to prevent any complications that would make any pup get stuck in between transformation. Stopping halfway in the first shifting process was a deadly incident. The pup would be in excruciating pain which would result in death. After this, the Alpha stood up to give a short speech. As he stood, the noise died. He cleared his throat and began, "Tonight is the night when pups stop being pups and take up the mantle of being real werewolves. It marks a new beginning of power, love and development." His voice boomed as he spoke, "After tonight, they will be free to join any department they desire and henceforth perform their obligations to the pack. They can also pick a trade and find your mates. But remember, power is not meant to be abused. Power is responsibility. With that been said, May the shifting begin!" and everyone started cheering again. Brawn grew angry at the words of Alpha Veer. He wondered how the same werewolf who murdered his father, could have the effrontery to openly preach about responsibility. He decided to let that off his mind as he had bigger issues on his plate. A Delta came to the front of the pups and gave them instructions on what they were to do. They were asked to look up to the moon, focus in their hearts and wait for the lunar goddess to help their wolves come forth. It was a full moon and the light from the moon reflected on their faces as they looked up. Au felt a bit downcasted as she watched the whole process. She wished she could join them but she could not disobey her brother, the Alpha. His words were law and no one dared broke them, including his relatives. She decided to ask her sister if she knew why she was not allowed to perform her first shift in the pack. She leaned toward her sister and asked. Beta Felicity bent and lowered her head to Au's direction so that she could hear what she was saying amidst the cheering. "Do you have any idea why the Alpha has forbidden me to partake in any shifting ceremony in the pack?" Au asked. Beta Felicity smiled and replied, "I don't really know but when I asked him some time ago. He said he wanted you to have a special shifting ceremony in your mate's pack. That was all he told me."
