Brawn was woken up by the opening of the door. He opened his eyes and saw that he was lying on Au's bed. Au was not in the room, she had just left the room. He sat up wondering how he got to her bed. He stood up and quickly went to the spot where the box of perfume was but it was no longer there. He wondered if Au had gone to deliver it herself. If that was the case, she would surely have something to say. He clamp both palms on his face and tried to remember how he got to her bed in her inner chamber. He could only remember he had slept off while Au combed his hair but he did not remember walking to or even climbing on her bed.
The door opened again and Au walked in carrying some bowls on a tray. Two of the bowls were covered at the top while one was opened with little water in it. There was also a cup, a jar of water and a fork on the tray.
"I see you are awake now," she said in an odd and mild tone as she dropped the bowls on the mini table.
Brawn stood there and did not say anything. He tried to imagine what Au was about to say to him.
She pointed at the bowl on the small table saying, "I brought you some food. Come and eat."
Brawn could not believe his ears neither could he believe his eyes. Au was inviting him to eat? It sounded too good to be true. She had offered to comb his hair – and she actually combed it – a while ago and she was in front of him looking so calm and unbothered that he slept off, inviting him for a meal. Brawn's mind was filled with incredulity. He thought to himself that it must be a trick or test to see his response.
He quickly declined the offer politely in his best omega-like manner, "Thank you, ma'am. I appreciate it but I am supposed to be on my way to deliver the box of perfume you asked me to deliver. I know I have delayed a bit by sleeping off but I am deeply sorry."
Au did not respond to him. She was busy opening the bowls and setting the table. Brawn knew he spoke in a clear and audible voice loud enough for her to hear him, so he was sure that she heard him.
"Here, The table is set. You can start eating," she said as she stood erect after opening the last bowl.
He looked at the table. He saw a large steak of meat and a piece of fish as big as his foot, laying innocently in the first bowl. He moved his eyes to the other bowl and saw a heap of fried potato chips with scrambled eggs. The meal looked like it was calling his name and his hungry stomach seemed like it wanted to come out of his body to answer the call. As he held himself from taking what he felt was a trap, his stomach began to complain in a quiet rumble. Brawn wondered why he was hungry even though he had eaten that morning.
He employed all the self-control he had to move his eyes away from the food and said, "Thank you, ma'am but I am here to work and besides I just had breakfast before coming here. I appreciate your kind gesture, ma'am, but I am not hungry." On finishing his statement his stomach made a loud roar showing that Brawn was speaking for himself and not for it.
Au smiled faintly at Brawn's rumbling stomach and pulled the chair in front of the table where the food was. She stared at him with an expression telling him that she was waiting for him.
Brawn saw that she was really serious with the offer. He decided to give in as he had resisted twice. He walked to the chair which had Au behind it and sat. He look up at her and she still did not say anything. She moved away from his back to her executive chair. Brawn washed his hands, picked a folk, used the folk to lift a slice of potato chips to his mouth and took a bite.
He was still very sceptical about the food. He waited for Au to say that the test was over or he failed the test or something but he did not hear a word from her. He raised his eyes and met her eyes staring half-affectionately at him. She looked away as soon as his eyes met hers.
He took another bite and observed her again.
"Go on, eat. The food is getting cold," she said encouraging his next bite.
He ate the chips together with the egg still suspicious of Au's kind gestures. After eating a couple of chips and Au did not stop him, he dropped the fork and held the piece of meat in his right hand. He took a bite of the meat and next the fish. He held the folk with his left hand and the steak of meat with his right hand. He ate the potato chips and eggs with the folk and the meat simultaneously. He tried to eat as quickly as he could because he wanted to make sure he had eaten enough before Au changed her mind.
"Gently! you will choke. The food is not running away so no need to rush," Au advised.
Brawn stopped stuffing his mouth and forcefully swallowed part of the food in his mouth. It was now convinced that it was not a prank or a test. He drank some water and started rechewing the remaining food in his mouth properly. He began to see that all the hard work he had put in making her loosen up to him had finally paid off. He also began to believe everything Nathan and Sparkle had been telling him . . . she was actually nice as everyone claimed after all. He felt calm and relieved that his days of torment were finally over. Maybe if he put more effort, she would like him some more.
"How is it?" Au asked with some interest showing on her face.
He swallowed and said, nodding his head, "It is very good, ma'am. Thank you." He took the fish and split it into two. He dropped one half on the bowl and removed the bone in between the other half on his hand. He bit a quarter of it and helped himself with some more potatoes and eggs. He did not drink more water because he did not want to get filled up quickly.
"That's nice . . . I prepared it myself," she said, informing him with a smile.
Brawn choked at the words of Au. He started coughing. He did not know that Au had prepared the food herself. He was very grateful he did not condemn the food.
Au gave a frown and said reproachfully, "I told you not to rush the food. Do you want to kill yourself? Drink some water, please." She wanted to stand up to give him the cup of water but he was already helping himself with the cup of water.
After drinking the water, he swallowed the food in his mouth and coughed twice. He said, "I didn't know that you prepared the food yourself."
"What is wrong with the food? The food has an awful taste?" Au asked with some elements of suspicion on her face. Her eyes narrowed as she asked.
"Not that, ma'am –"
"You don't like the food?" she asked immediately.
"I am really enjoying the meal, ma'am and I appreciate it," Brawn quickly said as Au's questions were becoming too much for him.
"So what is the problem?" she asked with her eyes narrowed even more.
"I didn't expect you to give me the food you made yourself," Brawn said.
She moved backwards and relaxed her back on her chair. She rolled her eyes away and said, "I made the food for myself and it turned out to be excess. Sparkle isn't around so I decided to give it to you. . . . It is nothing special." She knew she was lying. The female omegas were the ones who usually prepared the food for the Alpha's family. Au had actually taken out time to prepare the food for him specially.
"Thank you all the same, ma'am," he said eating the last piece of potato chip and egg. He sat with the other half of the fish and ate it gently. His stomach was full and his tummy had protruded a bit.
When he was done eating, he washed his hands and stood up. He gathered the bowls together and carried them in his hands and said, "Thank you, ma'am, once again. Please excuse me, I want to go and wash these dishes?"
"You don't need to bother yourself with that. I'll call some omegas to help me clean up . . . and please, enough of the thanking," she said.
"Okay, ma'am," he said as he dropped the bowls back on the mini table. He had a smile on his face that he could not control. He was happy that he had been with Au since and she had not been for once rude to him. It seemed like a dream to him. If it was actually a dream, he was not planning to wake up.
He turned back to Au and bowed his head as he said," I must get going to work now, ma'am."
"Which of the work are you talking about?" Au asked calmly.
"The one at the body oil and perfume producing factory. . . . The one which you said I should do for a month . . . and which you are a part of," he said with some element of confusion. He wondered if she had forgotten the job she gave him.
She said, "Oh, that!" and the smile on Brawn's face reappeared.
"By this time of the day? Look outside the window," she said as she walked to her drawer table and sat on the chair in front of it.
Brawn looked outside the window and noticed the sun was not shining so brightly. It was already sunset.
"It is almost dusk and you want to start going to work?"
"I didn't know that –"
"Anyway, I don't know the work you are talking about though because you fired yourself the moment you slept off like a pregnant pig," she informed him in a very calm and undisturbed manner like she was giving him a piece of comforting news.
Brawn's mouth fell wide open and he stared at Au in shock.
