Brawn was now fully ready to wake up if he was dreaming. So all her kind gestures were subtle? He had earlier suspected her of being kind to him out of the blues.
"But, ma'am . . ."
"Hmm?" Au answered as she pick a book on her drawer table and start looking through it.
"But why all the kindness and the meal when you knew you had fired me since morning?"
"You needed strength to receive the news. I didn't want you fainting in my room when I tell you. . . . And again, you don't stomach such news on an empty stomach," Au said still running her eyes through the pages of the book and not looking up.
He wondered how he was going to finish up the payment for the broken glass of the window he broke some weeks ago since he was now jobless. He looked at her and she appeared devoted to reading the book in her hand. She did not seem to care or have his time.
He braced himself up and asked, "Ma'am, What of the rest payment for the broken window? How do I go about it?"
"You should have thought about that before you slept like a fool. Your payment is incomplete and I would be needing a full payment," she said still with calmness in her voice. She stopped reading the book, closed it and dropped it on her drawer table. She raised her head to Brawn and added, "Well, since I am not a wicked person, I have decided to give you another chance . . ."
"Thank you, ma'am," Brawn said feeling a bit relieved on hearing that.
"But not at the factory. Henceforth, you will be my errand boy for two months,"
"What?!" Brawn shouted unconsciously. He returned his voice to a lower pitch when he discovered that he was raising his voice at Au. He continued, "Errand boy? A whole two months? But I was almost done with the payment. I have worked in the factory for two weeks and six days. Tomorrow would make it the third week. How come I am to still work for another two months as – as – as an errand boy?" Brawn said. He could not successfully pin the pitch of his voice down. His voice was often drifting back to the high pitch as he was not pleased with his new job at all.
"You can choose not to. I wasn't saying it was mandatory," Au said.
"If I decline, is there another option, ma'am?"
"Of course there is. You would need to prepare your best attire because you will be meeting with the Alpha to give him a summary of how you almost stole my earring and how you broke my window. That's all," Au said as she relaxed her back on her chair. "The choice is yours," she added.
"But that isn't an option, ma'am," Brawn said.
"It is to you. Make up your mind now and give me your reply now."
Brawn felt a feeling of anger rushing through his vein. He glanced at her and saw how unbothered she was.
"I am waiting for you. Answer me! Let me go and book you a meeting with our Alpha," Au said in a calm tone that negated the words she was saying.
"I don't actually have a choice, ma'am. I agree to be your errand boy," Brawn managed to say.
"That is a smart choice you made," Au said with a smirk.
"Can I leave now, ma'am?" Brawn asked impatiently.
"Not yet. Take all the dishes to the kitchen and report back here after that for your job description," Au instructed.
"Yes, ma'am," Brawn said and gave a bow. He walked over to the tray that contained the empty bowls and carried them. He walked out to the door and glanced at Au, trying not to express his anger. He open the door, left and shut the door behind him. When he got to the kitchen he met some omegas doing the dishes and some preparing dinner for the Alpha and his family. He had never entered the kitchen before because he had not been allocated to do any chore in or that led to the kitchen prior to that time.
The kitchen had walls that looked like they were cut out of rocks. The kitchen was as tall as nine feet and a half. The ceiling was curved and made of wood. There were numerous frying pans hung around the walls. The oven and the stove were surrounded by rocks laid in coaches. There were heaps of fire woods packed beside the stove. There was a large table which had metal jars and vanished bowls made from baked clay; on top of the table. There was a flower vase in the middle of the table. There were also other smaller tables with bowls of fruits on some while the rest were empty. Two omega females were cutting fruited vegetables on one of the empty tables. They both wore long gowns and had their hair covered. Above them were two chandeliers with six big candle sticks on each of them. Two other omega females were stirring a pot of baked beans on the stove. Another two lady omegas were doing the dishes.
Brawn greeted them as he entered. He knew them and had seen them often but he had never been to their place of allocation.
"Hey everyone," Brawn greeted as he walked straight down to those doing the dishes.
One of the omega females stirring the food in the pot turned, smiled and replied to him first before the others responded to his greeting.
"Hey, Raw,"
"This looks like Au's special dishwares," one of the lady omegas doing the dishes noticed.
"Yes, they are," Brawn replied.
"You didn't go to work today?" one of the omega females cutting vegetables asked.
"Au sent you to bring them here for washing?" the lady omega who asked about the dishware asked.
"Yes . . ." Brawn said turning to the omega female cutting vegetables. He turned to the lady omega doing the dishes and also said, "Yes." He looked around at all of them and said, "Ladies, I would have loved to explain everything to you all but I am in a bit of a hurry. I will explain later."
Some of them nodded in agreement while some of them said, "Okay then."
Brawn took his leave and the two lady omegas ushered him out with their smiles of admiration.
Brawn walked back to the door of Au's room reluctantly. He was not happy at the sudden change in his job. When he got to the door, he stood in front of it and clenched his fist into a punch. He raised his clenched fist towards the door and bit his lower lips. He frowned and began breathing heavily like he was trying to hold his anger.
"What are you doing?" a voice behind him asked.
Brawn quickly released his punch and dropped his hand to his thighs. He turned and said automatically to the person behind him, "Nothing!"
"So you want to beat me up?" the person said, and that person was Au.
"No, ma'am," Brawn said as he assumed his omega stance.
"Explain what you were doing with your fist a moment ago," Au said as she folded her hands.
"I was not doing anything, ma'am," Brawn replied.
"Don't lie to me. I saw you!" Au said.
"Yes, I know you did see me, ma'am but it was just a trivial gesture that should be overlooked because I don't have an explanation for it, ma'am," Brawn answered in a clear voice.
Au eyed him from head to toe and said, "Move away from my door." which Brawn did.
She entered her room and left the door open. Brawn stood there looking at her angrily from behind.
"Don't keep me waiting. . . . Shut my door too!" Au said without turning back.
Brawn walked inside and shut the door behind him.
Au royally sat on her executive chair. She looked at Brawn who was standing in front of her some distance away.
"Move closer, I don't want to hurt my voice shouting," Au said in a very formal tone.
Brawn thought to himself if she was getting tired of her hobby –shouting. He took some steps towards her and stood a bit closer to her.
She began giving him instructions about his new line of work, "Henceforth, you will follow me around to wherever I go." She paused, cleared her throat and continued in a more clearer and formal voice, "You are to resume to my room at dawn and you are to close only when I dismiss you. Am I making myself clear?"
"Yes, ma'am," Brawn said in an unenthusiastic voice.
"I will talk to the head omega to inform him of the latest developments. Any questions?" Au asked.
"Am I dismissed now? . . . ma'am?" Brawn asked abruptly.
Au stared at him in surprise and said slowly, "Yes."
She wasn't expecting such a question. She had thought he would whine or complain but he replied her question with a question. His question threw her off balance, making her release him against her initial intention.
Brawn walked out of Au's room and met Sparkle coming on the way.
Sparkle said to him sounding worried, "You didn't come to work today. Are you –"
"I was fired. You can ask Au for more details," He said without stopping.
