I blinked against the harsh light. My head throbbed. Confusion washed over me. The last thing I remembered was the tear, and my sister's terrified face. I felt someone's fingers running softly through my hair, and when I groaned and turned towards my twin's scent, she sat up looking upset.
''Cassy!'' She sang in relief, and hugged me, ''Why did you do that? You could have died!''
''I couldn’t let you get hurt,'' My voice cracked. ''You mean everything to me. We came into the world together, and we're leaving it together.''
She shook her head, her soft hair flying around her like a tempest. ''You’re so reckless! You think you’re a hero, but you’re not. You could have left me alone. Don’t you see?''
''You wouldn't be alone. You'd have Aiden.'' I struggled to sit up. ''Where is he, by the way?'' I asked, glancing around.
Ava crossed her arms, still glaring at me. ''He had to go to a council meeting, but he'll be back soon.''
I took a deep breath, ''Sure he will.'' I rolled my eyes, ''I could have died and he left me. I don't care if he'll be back soon.''
''It's not like that. He hasn't left your side since you passed out, he even brought you back from the dead.''
''Dead?''
''You died, he saved you. Please Cassy, please give him a proper chance. He really does love you.''
I nodded, as I thought things over, ''Are you okay?'' I changed the subject.
''I'm fine,'' She shrugged and hugged me again, ''Oh, Cassy, don't do this to me again.''
''I second that,'' We both looked up to see nanny. She was holding a tray of food, and dressed in a crinkled dress. She mustn't have slept while I was unconscious, ''It's so good to see you awake, my darling.''
''It's good to see you too, nanny. I'm sorry if you've been worried.''
''If? Of course, I've been worried.'' She shook her head. ''Are you hungry? Would you like to eat?''
''Make her some soup.'' Aiden said from the open doorway, and my heart fluttered at his presence. ''Don't give her anything too complicated. She loves pumpkin and lamb soup. Get her that.''
''Yes, your majesty,'' She smiled at him, ''Ava, this is for you. Eat.''
Ava nodded, and I turned to her, ''Haven't you eaten? How long have I been out of it?''
''Too long,'' Ava answered as Aiden sat down beside me. He hesitated for a second, before he reached out to touch my face.
''Are you in pain?'' He asked.
I shook my head. ''I'm just a little uncomfortable. You don't have to stay. I know you must be busy.''
''If you're upset that I left. I had no choice. But I'm back now.'' He told me, his voice sincere, ''I was so worried about you.''
Ava nodded in agreement, before she pressed her face into my throat and hugged me tighter. She was shivering slightly, and I hated that she was so worried about me. I'd have been a frantic mess if the roles were reversed, and she'd been the one unconscious.
''I'm sorry, but we had to close the tear,'' I pointed out, ''Is there any reason the warding failed? Or was the tear just too powerful?''
''We'll talk about all of this once you've recovered,'' Aiden moved his hand from my face, and down my arm to my hand, that he lifted and kissed it.
In that instant, something shifted between us. The tension, the hurt, it all hung in the air like a storm waiting to break. But instead of anger, I felt desire and gratitude.
''You saved my life.'' I pointed out.
''Of course I did,'' He smiled and kissed my hand again,''I love you. I would die for you. Kill for you. Saving your life isn't a sacrifice.''
I felt tears fill my eyes, at his words, and quickly leaned forward to embrace him. ''Thank you.''
''You're welcome.'' He whispered into my hair, as Ava wound her arms around us too.
When Aiden leaned back, he took my face in his hands and leaned forward to kiss me, and for the first time. I didn't pull away and when our lips met, it felt right. It was sweet and warm. He started slowly, but something built inside us, and things seemed to intensify.
Our lips moved in sinc, our tongues clashing, while his arms tightened around me. I gripped his shirt, and moved closer, but then my head began to sting and I leaned back.
''That was hot.'' Ava smirked, and we both laughed, ''My turn.'' Ava declared as she grabbed Aidens shirt and pulled him closer to kiss him.
I laid back as they kissed over me. I frowned when I realized the sight of them kissing excited me, but, of course, my sister had to ruin things by trying to move her hands into his pants. Aiden quickly grabbed her wrists and broke their kiss.
''Ava, you really are going to kill me.'' He shook his head, ''Sit back and behave.''
''We should celebrate Cassy's health.'' She smiled as she leaned over and kissed me softy, before lying down beside me, hugging me close.
''How would you like to celebrate?'' He asked, as he gently stroked my cheek.
''Sex.'' Ava smiled at him.
He huffed some smoke out of his nose in frustration, ''Wait until the wedding night, which I have ordered to be brought up. You won't have to wait much longer.''
''How much longer?''
Aiden smiled and playfully flicked her nose, ''So impatient. A month or two, just behave.''
''Will we have a hatchling straight away?'' She asked, and I turned ot her with wide eyes.
''Of course not.'' I told her, ''We have the ritual. We can't be pregnant during that time.''
''If we have the heir straight away, we'll have just enough time to recover.'' She argued. ''And if one or both of us die, at least the heir will be born.''
''We should wait until after the ritual.'' I told her, but then my head hurt again, and I groaned and held my forehead.
''Let's worry about this after Cassy's recovered properly,'' Aiden told her as he laid down next to me, moved my hand and kissed my forehead. ''Just close your eyes and rest until nanny comes back with your food. In the meantime, Ava, please eat yours.''
''Okay,'' She said as she sat up again, and pulled the tray onto her lap.
