Lily's POV
“ You don't get it.” I sauntered alongside him as fast as I could because this couldn't be happening to me. Not now.
“I didn't do anything wrong. Why don't you pass it over to someone else? Anyone else can take the case, can't you Lizzy?” I slipped in that name as fast as I could because I knew she would be glad to do that.
“You don't get it, Lily; you have to go along with this. They insisted on not having any lawyer in this aside from the one who had started it at first.”
Raymond was definitely going to be the end of me. I was so certain about that because what exactly was going on right now? Why was I being bumped against an end that I would never have expected in the first place?
“My parents, they need me, and I have to….”
“Oh, your parents can wait, and we both know that, so how about you get along and go over the case? Just like you always have? Besides, what exactly happened?”
“What?”
“I don't know, but his attorney brought up something about them getting new evidence. I don't know what it is, but I would like to lay my hands on it.”
“I can't do this now. I have to leave.” I tapped my palm against my open one to let him know just how much I needed to be out of here.
“I can't stay here for one more second than I already have.”
I had gone through the gruesome process of packing my bags and dumping them in the trunk and even went to great lengths to book a flight that would take me to Kentucky, and I would be stupid to stay here one more minute when I needed to be out.
“You can.” He placed a hand against my shoulder. “And you will do that, Lily, because this will be a stain on not just your name but the law firm if it gets out. Don't tell me you don't have a problem with the public finding out?” He quizzed me when I sighed.
“I do.”
“Then get to work. I wouldn't want them finding out that the attorney who has never lost a case actually didn't pay much attention to one, and now it is pulling her down; you wouldn't want to know the dent it will cause on your name and ours.”
“I just have to be gone.” I answered.
“That can be arranged after you are done with work. You can get a month; how about two?”
“You don't get it. It has to be now.”
He shook his head. “Now isn't the time for that. You can't have that now. So how about you get back to work? And see that things are perfect? If this gets to the press, all of your previous cases would be reopened as well, and we both wouldn't want that, would we?”
“But still…”
“There's no 'but,' Lily, get. To. Work.”
I knew there was no fighting it, but I also couldn't stay, not when Raymond was at my neck. He was threatening me with my career, one I had painstakingly built over the years.
“I'm doing this anyway.”
I strutted out, not caring about his yells for me to come back. That was good riddance to bad rubbish. Raymond didn't owe me, and I wasn't about to let him dictate what I should do .
Kentucky would be a perfect hiding place for me until everything subsided and I wasn't dipped in this s**t I had created for myself. Or maybe when I thought about a way to handle it all.
My car was waiting for me when I stepped out, just like I had parked it, and slipping in, I stepped on the gas, driving away as I made my way to the airport. I wasn't about to waste one more time than I already had.
My phone blazed, but I didn't pay attention to it, anything aside from being stuck in the law firm where Raymond could step in any hour from now.
When I slammed my brakes at the airport, I stepped out, making my way to the trunk where I hurled out my bags. I wasn't going to worry about my car since I had made the arrangements to have it driven back.
I let the boxes I had with me roll while I walked behind them, taking a quick glance at the airport and how this would be over soon. I glanced around, taking a quick breath as I waited for the time to approach. All I had to do was wait for ten more minutes, and that would be it.
I sat on the chair as I stomped my feet while watching as the time ticked, and when it finally slammed, the time I had just been waiting for, I stood up abruptly when my name was called.
I had barely taken a step further when men rushed in, enclosing me. I didn't think much about it as I swerved to the side when they did the same.
“Miss, we are from the state CID, and you have to come with us to the station.”
“What do you mean I have to come with you to the station?”
This couldn't be happening to me now, not when I was so close to what would be my freedom.
“Officers, I think you got the wrong person here.” I uttered frantically while staring above their shoulders, The plane I was supposed to be in was about to take flight, and I shouldn't be kept waiting.
“You are to come with us.” Cuffs were clasped against my wrist. “And you have the right to an attorney.”
All I wanted to do was slap myself across the head. What exactly had Raymond done? How could he go so far?
I let them lead me away, the far hands of freedom stretching far away from me with each step we took.
I was let into a car, which seemed portable enough for a state's car, while I let them lead me on, when I noticed they weren't driving in the way they were supposed to.
“What are you doing? You shouldn't take that path; it isn't the way to the precinct you are to take me to.”
“Let me get out. Now, or I will scream.” I threatened. I had been stupid. How could I have let them lead me away just like that?
How was it even possible that I hadn't thought of taking precautions?
“Do you know who I am? Do you know what is going to happen to you if I get out? I will sue you all.”
“As expected of all attorneys, she makes threats, and it is a legal one at that.”
“I will…” I felt a prick on my shoulder as anguish engulfed me. “Arrghhh,” I screamed at the top of my voice before I lost consciousness.
