Chapter 5

1460 Words
Amelia’s POV As the door closes, I slowly sink to the floor, emotions flooding through me. Fear, anger, and sadness, all at once. The lights flicker, the air electrified as I struggle to regain control of my emotions. I hear Lexi crying but can’t focus enough to see what she needs. Mom rushes over and picks her up just as the light bulbs shatter. Mom protects Lexi as I cry out. “Freeze,” I hear Mom mutter. I let my emotions flow through me, and after a few minutes, I calm myself. I look around and see the destruction that my feelings and powers have caused. Looking at Mom with fear in my eyes, “What am I going to do? Not everyone here knows that we are witches.” A twinkle in Mom’s eyes shows she knows what to do. “You are going to fix everything. All you have to do is utter the word repair while thinking about what you want fixed.” Nodding, I look around at everything that needs to be fixed. “Repair,” I whisper and watch everything zap back into place. “Resume,” Mom says, causing me to look at her in confusion. Seconds later, the nurse walks back in. “Ready to go?” she asks. I smile and nod. Sitting down in the wheelchair, I sigh. Things just got a lot harder than they were already going to be. The drive home is quiet, none of us wanting to discuss what Trey had said. Sitting in the back seat, I look out the window and rest my hand on Lexi’s face. She is such a sweet baby. I know I can’t let Trey have his way. He can’t take my daughter from me. If he does, she will never grow to know her true potential as a witch and person. Looking down at Lexi, I can’t help but feel my heart swell with love for her. As we pull up to the house, I look at my parents. “We have to protect her,” I think out loud. “First thing first, let’s get you girls settled, then we will call on the other witches in the coven to see what can be done,” says Mom. After settling into my old room, I opted to nap with Lexi. The past few days have taken their toll on me, and I am exhausted. Closing my eyes, I give in to sleep with Lexi resting on my chest. Opening my eyes, I quickly look around for Lexi. My anxiety rises as I can’t find her. Hurrying out of the room, I spot my parents in the kitchen, and there in Dad’s arms is Lexi as Mom busies herself making a bottle. “Oh, let me,” I say as I take over for Mom. “I have to get used to doing things myself eventually.” As I finish fixing Lexi’s bottle, I hand it to Dad, who insists on feeding her. Sitting down, Mom gives me a cup of coffee. Inhaling the intoxicating smell, I moan. It’s been so long since I’ve had a cup of coffee. Sipping on the warm drink, I look about myself and think about the many happy memories I have had in this kitchen. “So, I will need to return to work sooner than anticipated,” I said. “With Trey trying for full custody of Lexi, I will need to hire a lawyer. I can’t do that with his money, though it would be a nice way to tell him to f**k off.” Dad chuckles, “Well, that’s one way of doing that. I have a friend who is a lawyer. I’ll see if he would work with us on this. He might even get the judge to make Trey for his costs.” “We must put Lexi’s powers into a talisman before anything else. If Trey were to discover her powers, there is no telling what he would do. We have to protect her powers at all costs,” says Mom. I nod as I sip on my coffee. “When can the coven help seal Lexi’s powers in the talisman?” I ask. “They will be here later today. Many have hours to travel. We will need as many witches as possible with how early Lexi got her powers and how powerful they are. Do you think James would mind giving us his mother’s information to help?” Mom answers. “I’m not sure, but I can call him and let him know what’s going on. I’m sure he would be willing to help.” James’s POV When I gave Amelia my number, I didn’t think she would use it so quickly, much less for contacting my mother. I had hoped she would have taken the hint that I was hoping for more than just a friendship, but who am I kidding? I was nothing more than her doctor. Besides, she was married. God, I wish I knew what was going through my mind when I gave it to her. All I can think about is how soft her lips look, the curve of her hips, and the gentle touch of her hand as she was going over papers for Alexandria. Shaking my head, I call my mom. She’ll want to help. “Mom, hey! Listen, a patient left the hospital with a newborn with powers. The mother wants to seal the powers into a talisman until the child is older. Can you help? Great! I’ll pick you up in a few minutes, and we can head over together.” I feel like a little kid getting ready to go to the candy shop. I can’t wait to see Amelia again. I can smell her scent already, and God, did it smell good! After picking up Mom, we headed to the address that Amelia texted me. The drive was quick, though I think that had more to do with me speeding slightly. I couldn’t help it; I needed to be near Amelia again. I felt drawn to her. Getting out of the car, I see the house tower above us and the yard stretch out of view behind the building. “Dr. Miller, you came! How good to see you again! I just wanted to thank you personally for caring for my daughter for the last few months,” says Anna, giving me a quick smile. “You must be Alexandria! Thank you so much for coming to help. Amelia is out in the back getting things set up. The others in the coven should be here shortly.” Following Anna to the back, I can see Amelia has a blanket in the middle of the yard to set Alexandria on and is working on making a circle with some weird black powder. “How are you feeling, Amelia?” I ask. Looking up, she looked surprised that I would be there. “I’ll feel better once we get this done. Alexandria needs to be protected. That bastard made a mistake thinking I would just step to the side and let him have things his way,” she says. She must have seen the confusion on my face as she explained, “Trey, my husband, is filing for a divorce and is going to try and take Alexandria from me.” A sob escaping from Amelia gathers dark clouds. I put my hand on her shoulder, turning her around. I pull her into a hug. She relaxes to my touch; I feel her taking a deep breath. “No need to be so strong. There are plenty willing to help make things right for you,” I say. I can feel her smile as she rests her head on my shoulder. Looking around, I see several other witches gathering around the circle. Anna brings Alexandria over and places her on the blanket in the middle of the circle. As the witches gather around and hold hands, I back up towards the house where Amelia’s father is watching. It has been some time since I have seen my mother use her powers. The sight always amazed me. The coven of witches begins to chant a spell in a language I don’t understand. Anna shouted out the directions in between each chant. A storm forms above the circle, the clouds rumble with thunder, lightning shooting from the sky, when without warning, lightning goes from Alexandria towards the sky, then back down to Amelia, who was holding the talisman. As Alexandria’s magic goes into the amulet, there is a surge of power, knocking me to the ground. I try to get back up, but I fall, blacking out.
