Amelia’s POV
Standing in the circle with Mom and the other witches, I am amazed as I chant a spell I don’t know. Watching the storm brew above, I feel the spell working, feel Lexi’s powers as they slip from her and come to the talisman in my hand. As the magic enters the amulet, it sends a shock wave, knocking down several weaker witches and James and Dad. Seeing Lexi sitting there on the blanket like nothing happened, I chuckle. I pick her up and head to where James and Dad are standing. “You guys ok?” I ask, looking at them. “It’s going to take more than a little magic to shake us, sweetie,” Dad says, chuckling.
Looking over to James, I smile. I am so glad he is here. I can’t help but stare. Damn, he is so fine. His tight shirt showed off his abs more than the shirts that he wore to work ever did. His jeans showing off his ass and tightly hugging his crotch make my mouth dry imagining what was beneath. Looking into his eyes as clear as the blue sky, I see something there, desire perhaps. Placing my hand on his, I smile. “Thank you for being here. It means a lot to me,” I say, slightly squeezing his hand. Grabbing my hand, he squeezes, “I’m glad I could be here for you. Would you like to go for a walk? You look like you could use some fresh air.” Turning to Dad, I ask, “Would you and Mom mind watching Lexi for me for a bit? We won’t be long, I promise.” “Take your time, dear. Your mother and I would never mind watching this bundle of joy.”
Walking in silence, James and I head to the woods at the back of the property. James looks at me as we reach the woods and says, “I know this isn’t my place, but what exactly happened with you and your husband?” Looking at him, for some reason, I feel like I can share everything, and I do. I share everything: how we spent years trying to have a baby, how upset he got every time I had a miscarriage, how he gave up on me, and worse of all, how he abandoned me just as I finally could stay pregnant. “I was so excited walking into his office to tell him we were expecting. Now, I just feel foolish for not seeing the signs of his affair sooner. I should have known that no one works that much without finding some way to entertain themselves. I found out the day I had the accident. That’s actually what caused it. I ran from the truth. That’s a mistake I won’t make again.” “Wow,” says James. “I had no idea you were going through all that while in the hospital. He was a fool to give up someone like you.”
I smile shyly as James brushes a few strands of my hair behind my ear. Leaning in, waiting for him to kiss me, his lips inches away from mine, I hold my breath. His lips gently brush against mine, one of his hands running through my hair, the other finding its way around my waist, pulling me close. Deepening the kiss, his tongue dances across my lips, begging for entry. Opening my lips, I moan, wanting so much more in that moment than a kiss. Pulling back, he rests his forehead on mine. “Amelia, I can’t,” he whispers.
James’ POV
Fuck, I wish Amelia knew how much I wanted her, but I couldn’t, not while she was still married. Her body was so tempting. Her shirt flaunts her perky breasts and slender curves. Her jeans displayed just how firm her ass was. Her skin was soft. Just thinking about her turned me on. But I couldn’t kiss her, not while she was still married. It wasn’t right.
Looking at her, I can see the pain in her eyes. “Amelia, it’s not that I don’t want to, but you are still married. Once your divorce is finalized, I would be honored to take you out, but until then, I can’t. I know the pain of separating from a spouse, and I don’t want to take advantage of any feelings you may be having. Once you have had a real chance to settle and really come to terms with what’s happening, then and only then can we have a real chance. Because taking you here and now would be amazing. I want something more than just s*x. I can easily see a future with you, and I want to give it the best chance we can,” I say.
Smiling, she touches my cheek and lightly kisses my lips. “Thank you. It means a lot that you are willing to wait for my heart to truly be ready,” she says softly. Amelia rests her head on my shoulder, allowing me to hold her just a few minutes longer. I slowly inhale her scent. This will be a moment I won’t soon forget. “What’s on your mind?” I ask, smiling. “I just can’t help but think about how different my life has become. And to be honest, I’m glad that things have changed.” Amelia says, sounding still lost in thought. Holding her close, I don’t want to let go just yet, but we should be getting back to the house.
Pulling away, I put a small kiss on her forehead. Looking around, I realized how far into the woods we actually walked, and with the sun getting ready to set, we needed to get out of the woods quickly. “I know you are new to the supernatural world, but we should get going quickly. Nothing good lurks in the woods after dark.” I say, looking down at the woman who has quickly captured my heart. Holding her hand, I lead the way, effortlessly guiding us through the trees and bushes and back towards the house.
As we near the edge of the woods, my senses start picking up others in the area. Looking around, I can see a few others. Sniffing the area, I can tell they do not have good intentions. Looking at Amelia, I squeeze her hand. “Run! Amelia run back to the house and don’t turn back around. I’ll be back shortly,” I say as I turn around. Running towards the strangers, I shift. I can sense that Amelia has left, which is good. There’s no telling what these creatures want, and I know I might be unable to protect them while the moon wanes.
