Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the Lycan King
Chapter 1: Rejected Before the Pack (Part 1)
Chapter 1: Rejected Before the Pack (Part 1)
The full moon hung high above Blackwood Pack, bathing the ancient village in silver light.
To every wolf present, tonight was a celebration.
To Ava Moonstone, it was supposed to be the happiest night of her life.
She stood outside the Grand Hall, smoothing the wrinkles from her simple white dress. The cool night breeze carried the scent of pine, wildflowers, and the unmistakable fragrance of hundreds of werewolves gathered for the Moon Bond Ceremony.
Her heart raced with anticipation.
"Tonight..." she whispered to herself with a smile. "Everything changes."
For twenty-two years she had dreamed of this moment.
Ever since she and Alpha Ryder Blackwood discovered they were fated mates at eighteen, she had imagined standing beside him as Luna.
She remembered the way he had once looked at her.
The promises.
The laughter.
The stolen kisses beside Moon Lake.
"No matter what happens, you'll always be mine," Ryder had once whispered while tracing the crescent-shaped birthmark on her wrist.
Back then, she had believed every word.
"Ava!"
Her best friend, Lily, hurried toward her with a bright smile.
"There you are! Everyone is looking for you."
Ava laughed nervously.
"Am I late?"
"No," Lily said. "You're just... thinking too much."
Ava glanced toward the enormous hall where music echoed through the open doors.
"I'm nervous."
"You?" Lily teased. "The future Luna?"
Ava blushed.
"Stop."
Lily linked their arms together.
"Trust me. Every female in this pack wishes she were in your shoes."
Ava smiled, though an uneasy feeling settled deep inside her chest.
Something felt...
Wrong.
She couldn't explain it.
The Moon Goddess blessed this night.
Why did her wolf keep pacing anxiously inside her?
As they entered the Grand Hall, conversations stopped.
Hundreds of eyes turned toward Ava.
Some smiled warmly.
Others whispered behind raised hands.
The hall sparkled with crystal chandeliers and silver banners bearing the Blackwood crest.
At the far end stood the Alpha's throne.
Ryder wasn't there.
"Where is he?" Ava asked quietly.
"He'll make an entrance," Lily replied.
"He always does."
Ava forced herself to relax.
This was Ryder.
Her mate.
The man she loved more than life itself.
Moments later, the massive doors burst open.
Everyone stood.
Alpha Ryder Blackwood entered.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Dressed in black ceremonial robes embroidered with silver wolves.
He looked every bit the powerful Alpha.
The room erupted into applause.
Ava's heart melted.
He looked more handsome than ever.
For a brief second, their eyes met.
But instead of warmth...
She saw only coldness.
Her smile faltered.
Something was terribly wrong.
Ryder walked down the center aisle without looking at her again.
Behind him walked a stunning woman dressed in crimson silk.
Selena Frost.
Ava frowned.
Why was Selena beside him?
Selena wasn't a member of the Alpha's family.
She had no place in tonight's ceremony.
The whispers grew louder.
Ava caught fragments.
"...poor girl..."
"...she doesn't know..."
"...this will be ugly..."
Her stomach tightened.
The Elder stepped forward.
"Tonight," Elder Magnus announced, "we witness the Alpha's decision regarding the future Luna of Blackwood Pack."
Ava's pulse quickened.
This was it.
She stepped forward with trembling hands.
Before she could reach Ryder...
He raised one hand.
"Stop."
The single word echoed through the hall.
Silence followed.
Confused, Ava froze.
"Ryder?"
His expression remained emotionless.
"I have something to announce."
A chill swept across the room.
Ava's wolf whimpered.
No...
Please no...
Ryder looked directly into her eyes.
His voice was loud enough for everyone to hear.
"Ava Moonstone..."
"You are no longer worthy of standing beside me."
Her breath caught.
"What?"
"I reject you."
The words struck harder than any physical blow.
The room gasped.
Ava stared at him in disbelief.
"...Ryder?"
"I, Alpha Ryder Blackwood, reject you as my fated mate."
Pain exploded through Ava's body.
It felt as though invisible claws ripped through her soul.
She collapsed to her knees.
Her wolf screamed inside her mind.
The sacred mate bond cracked.
Tears blurred her vision.
"No..." she whispered.
"You can't..."
"You promised..."
Ryder's face remained cold.
"I made those promises before I understood what this pack truly needed."
He extended his hand toward Selena.
"This is Selena Frost."
"The daughter of the Northern Alpha."
"Our union will strengthen Blackwood Pack."
Selena smiled triumphantly before slipping her arm through Ryder's.
Ava couldn't breathe.
It wasn't just rejection.
It was betrayal.
Everything they had shared...
Every promise...
Every dream...
Had been discarded in front of the entire pack.
Some wolves lowered their heads in pity.
Others watched with cruel amusement.
Lily stepped forward.
"Alpha! You can't do this!"
"Silence!" Ryder growled.
His Alpha command forced many wolves to bow their heads.
Lily struggled against the pressure but refused to kneel.
"Ava has done nothing wrong!"
Ryder's eyes hardened.
"She is weak."
"The future Luna must strengthen this pack."
"Not burden it."
Each sentence pierced Ava's heart.
Weak?
She had spent years serving the pack.
Helping the elders.
Healing injured wolves.
Feeding orphaned pups.
Had none of it mattered?
Selena stepped closer, her voice dripping with false sympathy.
"You should be grateful, Ava."
"I'm saving you from responsibilities you could never handle."
The words ignited something inside Ava.
She slowly lifted her head.
Tears still stained her cheeks, but determination flickered in her eyes.
She had loved Ryder with everything she had.
But she would not beg.
Not anymore.
"You've made your choice," she said quietly.
Ryder didn't answer.
He simply turned away.
As though she no longer existed.
Elder Magnus looked troubled.
His ancient eyes lingered on the crescent-shaped mark glowing faintly beneath the sleeve of Ava's dress.
His lips parted in shock.
"It cannot be..."
No one heard his whisper.
No one noticed the strange silver light beginning to pulse beneath Ava's skin.
No one...
Except the Moon Goddess.
A heavy silence settled over the Grand Hall.
No one dared to speak.
Ava remained on her knees, her palms pressed against the polished stone floor. Every breath felt like fire in her chest. The pain of the mate bond being torn apart was unlike anything she had ever imagined.
It wasn't only her heart that was breaking.
It was her wolf.
Inside her mind, Luna, her inner wolf, cried out in agony.
"Why would he do this?" Luna whimpered.
Ava had no answer.
For four years she had loved Ryder with unwavering loyalty. She had believed every promise he whispered beneath the moonlight. Now those memories felt like shattered glass cutting through her soul.
She slowly forced herself to stand.
The movement surprised everyone.
Most rejected mates collapsed for days after a rejection.
Ava was trembling, but she refused to stay on the ground.
She lifted her tear-filled eyes to Ryder.
"So..." she whispered, "everything we shared meant nothing?"
For the briefest moment, guilt flashed across Ryder's face.
It disappeared just as quickly.
"I've made my decision."
His voice was firm.
"The future of this pack comes before personal feelings."
Ava gave a bitter laugh.
"So love was only convenient until power came knocking?"
A murmur spread through the crowd.
Even some of Ryder's warriors exchanged uneasy glances.
Selena stepped forward, a smug smile curving her lips.
"You should leave with dignity."
"This ceremony is no longer about you."
Ava looked at Selena without fear.
"No."
The single word echoed across the hall.
"I may have lost my mate..."
She swallowed hard.
"But I haven't lost my dignity."
Selena's smile faded.
Ryder frowned.
Before either of them could respond, Elder Magnus struck his staff against the floor.
"Enough!"
The old man's booming voice silenced the room.
His sharp eyes remained fixed on Ava's wrist, where the crescent-shaped birthmark glowed faintly beneath her sleeve.
"Impossible..." he thought.
"The mark has awakened."
He had seen that symbol only once before—in an ancient prophecy hidden within the sacred archives.
The Mark of the First Luna.
But that prophecy spoke of a queen who had vanished centuries ago.
How could an orphan like Ava bear such a mark?
The elder lowered his gaze.
"Not yet," he thought.
"The time isn't right."
Meanwhile, Ryder turned his back on Ava.
"As of this moment," he announced, "Selena Frost is my chosen Luna."
Applause erupted from a section of the hall.
Others remained silent.
Ava noticed every face.
Some looked ashamed.
Others looked relieved.
Only Lily rushed to her side.
"I'm so sorry," Lily whispered as she wrapped an arm around Ava's shoulders.
"We'll leave."
Ava nodded slowly.
She refused to let anyone see her cry again.
Without another word, she walked toward the great doors.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
Behind her, music began to play.
The celebration continued.
As though she had never existed.
Outside, cold rain suddenly began to fall.
The moon disappeared behind thick clouds.
Ava stood alone in the courtyard while the laughter from inside echoed into the night.
Her entire future had been stolen in a matter of minutes.
She looked toward the sky.
"Moon Goddess..."
"What did I do wrong?"
Only silence answered.
Then—
A sharp pain exploded across the glowing mark on her wrist.
She gasped.
Silver light spread beneath her skin before vanishing just as quickly.
Lily grabbed her arm.
"Ava... your birthmark..."
"It's glowing."
Before Ava could respond, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed behind them.
One of Ryder's elite warriors stopped several feet away.
His expression was unreadable.
"The Alpha has another order."
Ava closed her eyes.
"What now?"
The warrior hesitated.
"The Alpha commands that you leave Blackwood territory before sunrise."
"If you remain..."
"You will be treated as an enemy of the pack."
Lily gasped.
"What?"
"That's exile!"
Several wolves standing nearby looked horrified.
Even they hadn't expected Ryder to go that far.
Ava's heart finally stopped hurting.
Not because the pain was gone.
Because it had become something else.
Cold.
Numb.
She nodded once.
"Tell your Alpha..."
She paused.
"...that I will never beg for a place where I am unwanted."
The warrior lowered his head.
Without another word, he turned and walked away.
Rain soaked Ava's dress as she stared at the gates of the only home she had ever known.
By dawn...
She would have nothing.
No mate.
No family.
No pack.
No home.
Far beyond the Blackwood borders, deep within the forbidden forest, a massive black wolf suddenly lifted its head.
Its golden eyes snapped open.
It had sensed something.
A bond...
Ancient.
Powerful.
Long forgotten.
The beast shifted into the form of a tall man with midnight-black hair and piercing golden eyes.
King Kael Draven.
The Lycan King.
He looked toward Blackwood territory with an unreadable expression.
At the same moment, the silver mark on Ava's wrist flared again.
Kael placed a hand over his chest.
"...Impossible."
He had felt the call.
The call of the woman destiny had chosen.
And for the first time in centuries...
The Lycan King smiled.
