Chapter 31. Chased

1766 Words
It’s been a week now since Gael is here, I still can’t bring myself to tell him anything because I fear ruining his time here. We’re having so much fun together and I’m worried about what they would think of me. We’ve been to bequia, mustique, canouan, mayreau , union island and carriacou. Which are just a few of the little islands away from main land. We’re not able to take Gael to explore anything else because he has to go back tomorrow. However he said that he’d be coming back before the summer finished because he loves it here. “Can I talk to you?.” I texted Gael. “ yea sure. What’s up.” “ I mean..here, in my room.” “ oh. ok, I’ll be there in a sec.” As much as I’m scared for him to find out right now I’m more afraid of if he found out from evon himself. He would think the absolute worst of me. Not too long a knock came at my door. “ come in.” “ hey, what’s up.” He asked slowly shutting the door. “Nothing really. It’s just.. I’ve been feeling really bad this past two weeks and I don’t know if I can-” “ yo Gael come on let’s go get one last fun in man. you’re going back tomorrow. Yolan, let’s go have some fun.” “Andel no, we’re..I’m in the middle of-”i huffed. “ it’s okay babe. Let’s go, we’ll talk about it later.” He said holding my shoulders before walking out with Andel. Tears brimming my eyes as I started to get frustrated and scared. Frustrated because someone or something always interrupt me whenever I’m trying to tell him. scared because the longer I wait or don’t get to tell him the more guilty I feel and it scares me because I don’t know how he’s gonna take it. I plopped down on the bed with my face in my hands, letting out a chocked up sob. Why can’t I just make him listen. Why won’t he listen. Every time I don’t get to tell him the courage that I built up before is lost. I am not keeping this from him any longer I’m telling him tonight. “ yolan come on we were waiting on you downstairs the whole time.” Andel push his head through the c***k of my door. “ yea I-I’m coming.” I mumbled wiping the tears away hurrying to the bathroom to wash my face before I went down. We were walking in the neighbourhood for a good while just enjoying the night breeze. Gael and Andel were talking while I was in deep thought. Gael seemed like he was really just simply enjoying himself and so I decided not to say anything that would spoil his mood. we were approaching mr brown’s house. An old man with a lot of fruit trees in his yard..mangoes, plums, guavas, wax apples and whatever else trees he has there. also about five or so dogs that are always out in the yard or at the back of the house. He has a sign on his gate that says ‘ enter at your own risk’. “ man let’s do something really cool. Something you and yolan can tell your kids and grandkids” he laughed I groaned knowing what he was about to say “ let’s go get some fruits” “ from where, won’t the stores be closed.” Gael looks at him confused. “ no man. You see all these trees.” Andel said gesturing towards the trees around the house. “ all these are fruit trees.” A grin on his face while Gael’s face is one of horror. “ man I don’t want to get locked up the day before I have to go back home, my parents would- “ “ sshhh geez, man relax. This is Saint Vincent. There’s no such rules here. You either ask for it or take it.” He laughed before he continued “ however.. there’s only one tiny problem-“ “ oh no I’m out.” He put his hand up in dismissal.Andel throw his head back with laughter clutching his stomach before he grab Gael. “Man wait nuh. Dis ah way Mek e ting fun.” “ what the f**k did you just say,” Gael spun around asking Andel looking at him with wide eyes. “ he said this Is what makes it fun.”I translated to him “ why did he say it like that though.” “ it’s vincy accent. Andel you know he doesn’t understand it don’t use it again.” “ yea but if he intend on coming back don’t you think he should at least get used to it? Or learn it. Dude it’s not hard just listen to the words they’re not far from some actual words.” “ I don’t understand.” Gael muttered shaking his head. “Oh my god.” Andel face palms himself. “ Alright say.. I want to say ‘I’m not doing that’ in vincy I’d say ‘ me nah do that’ . So.. me -I, nah- not, do- doing, and that.. words that start with ‘th’ are pronounced as ‘d’.” “ oh.. ok. A little fancy an all. I like it.” “ alright now let’s go we’re wasting precious time.” Andel mumbled impatiently. “ wait. What is the tiny problem?.” Gael asked holding onto my hand. “ dogs.” I smiled apologetically as we’re already quietly entering the yard from the side quickly climbing the mango tree. “ what?. Dogs.? And you brought me here.”he whisper yelled and I tried to stifle a laugh but I couldn’t hold it that much. “Man I’m-“ before he could finish one of the dogs started barking making the others follow coming around to the side we’re at. It’s the fastest I’ve ever seen someone climbing a tree. Andel and I laughed out while the dogs are now heavily barking at the mango tree trunk then a light was turned on in the house. “ what the f**k man this is what you call fun. For f**k sake Andel,” while Andel continues to laugh I stopped, seeing the fear in his face really saddens me. “ Andel stop laughing, he’s not used to this.” I scolded him. “ who day deh?.” Mr browns voice came from the side door -Who’s there.- “ oh s**t” Andel and I whisper yelled. we started climbing down a bit when we heard the door open and mr brown coming out. “ me say who day deh.” -I said who’s there- “ Gael we gotta make a run for it.” Andel whispered. “ what?. no. s**t no. What about Yolanda.” He asked looking at me. “ don’t worry babe I’m used to it, just follow us.” We counted to three before We jumped together from the limb of the tree and ran to the back of the house, almost immediately the dogs took off behind us. there’s a woven wire fence that we have to jump over, that the dogs can’t but there’s a little hole there that they can get through. Running through the bushes we can clearly hear the dogs barking making their way through and catching up to us. We made it to the end of mr brown’s property but we’re blocked again by another fence only this time there’s barbed wire to the top of it. if we tried to jump it we’ll get cuts no doubt. With our hands on our knees we’re panting trying to catch our breaths. “ when did this get here.” I questioned “ what?.u guys didn’t know this was here?. We’re f**ked.” Gael exclaimed and started pacing nervously. “ dude calm down. you’re supposed to be a werewolf why are you running from a dog?. Honestly?.” Andel stood up straight laughing. “Andel there’s no Time for this” I frowned “ right?.” Gael huffed “ relax man. They’re just dogs.” Andel laughed “ really then why are we running they’re supposed to be pets” Gael gritted. “ okay guys let’s follow the fence up this way.” I pointed to the right that would hopefully lead us to the road. We started walking hoping that we can quickly get out of these bushes. The dogs probably turned back because they’re not barking anymore. As soon as we were about to breathe a sigh of relief for making it out of the bushes we saw mr brown’s shadow at the top of the bank. We slowly and carefully walked back about seven feet. Leaving the fence walking towards the house. as soon as the three of us got back into the back yard the dogs came chasing us again and Gael being a first timer growled at the dog. We split up running to the side of the house. Reaching the road we ran the direction to our house where we saw mr brown walking back. “ alyo cudda just ask.” -y’all could’ve just asked.- “We didn’t want to wake you.” Andel shouted “ but we did wake him though.” Gael and I said in unison. “ what would be the fun in that.” He grumbled to us. ******** At the airport I’m hugging Gael goodbye I can’t give him a little peck on the lips because my parents are here. “ what was it you wanted to tell me last night” Oh it’s nothing, forget it.” “ you sure.” “ yep.” At this time my mom pulled my dad and Andel over to the food place. “ Yolanda I know when girls say it’s nothing it’s always something. Forget it means to ask me a couple more times and that one word answer’ yep’ is ‘ no’. He said smiling. I couldn’t help but feeling guilty. I can’t bare to look him in his face so I held my head low playing with my fingers nervously. “ its- it’s just..” “ this is the final boarding call for passengers on flight 873B. Please proceed to gate four immediately..” the voice slowly went low as the tears escaped my eyes. Gael hugged me telling me it’s okay and he’ll be back. Yes I’ll miss him but that’s not why I’m crying. It hurts. Feeling guilty hurts..
