Chapter 8

394 Words
Two tequilas and a glass of wine and a half down, I was feeling more free and more reckless than usual. I just needed to forget who I was tonight. I needed to drink enough to forget everything. “Another shot!” I yelled. “Look at you, Zoey. I’ve never seen you be so eager before,” Rachel joked. I smiled as I took two more shots from the bartender and placed them in front of Rachel and me. We threw it back on the count of three, squidging up our faces at the taste. “Well, well, well, look who came,” Rachel exclaimed, looking towards the entrance. I turned around and saw him. Conrad was slowly making his way towards the bar, towards us. Feeling panicked, I excused myself to the bathroom before he got close enough. I stared at the bathroom mirror as my brown eyes stared back. Nothing extraordinary about me. I seem to attract beautiful women as friends and I’d always been okay with never being noticed, and never feeling like I measured up in that department. I’d never felt pretty growing up, I knew I wasn’t the girl that could light up a room just by walking through it. And I’d been okay with that. Until now. Now, I desperately wanted to be noticed by him. I needed to know more about him. But knowing it was unrequited burned my soul and pricked my heart. Pulling myself together, I headed back to the bar I had escaped from. I could see Rachel being her usual friendly self and wondered if he would fall under her charms, as countless others do. I slid onto the bar stool and remained quiet. They were taking a shot together and I suddenly felt invisible. He interrupted my melancholy thoughts and said, “You ladies have fun, I’m gonna head over there. Enjoy your evening.” He made his way towards a small booth, further away from the bar. And then it clicked. He was watching over me. Again. “Ugh he’s so nice Zoey! You have to go there,” Rachel said. “Not likely,” I said, as I signaled the bartender to pour two more shots. “It’s girls night, remember?” I reminded Rachel of tonight’s pact. “And that means no boys, let’s just have fun!”
