PUBLICLY DISGRACED

MIA “What are you talking about?” I scream at him, clenching my fists by my side. West cared about Cobra like a brother, and not only because of the club. To say such words to me now? How can West rest in peace seeing all this? Cobra chuckles, a wicked sound that forces me to take a step backwards. The hatred in his eyes burns more, red hot. “You think no one knows you’re cursed, you witch? Your own mother died giving birth to you,” No. “Your father committed suicide, jumped off a cliff to spare himself the horrors of being your only parent,” Please, stop. “Even the beta’s son realized what ill luck you are and left you for someone else, f****d your own cousin without a second thought, just to escape you,” I stagger, gripping the table with both hands to stop myself from falling. The coffee drips from my hair onto the table cloth, and so do my tears. “And West, my poor friend, couldn’t see you for what you are. We tried to warn him, but he never listened. He was in love with you! Now he’s dead, and it’s all your fault! You killed him!” Anger boils in the pit of my stomach, steaming hot. The vapor, like poison, quickly shoots into my blood. In a second, everything turns red. I jump to my feet, and my palm crashes against Cobra’s right cheek in a resounding slap. Murmurs and gasps erupt from all over the room, but I don’t care. Every muscle in my body is twitching. “How dare you say such words to me?” I cry out. “West was the love of my life! He was everything to me! It’s only for his memory that I’m fighting to hang on, and you insult me like this? In front of everyone! He would be ashamed of you!” “Shut the f**k up!” His first minion snaps at me. Cobra’s hands are still pressed on his face, right on the spot I slapped him. He breathes hard and fast, glaring at me. “You loved him?” His tone drips with all the venom in his eyes. “You think we don’t know?” Know what? I swallow hard. “You never loved West. It was obvious to everyone else but him.” He drops his hands, his lips thin into a wicked smile. “You spent two years rotting indoors after you lost the favor of the beta’s son. You were nowhere to be found, as good as dead. All of a sudden, you met West, and married you three weeks later?” I groan in pain as he snatches my right hand and squeezes my wrist. I see it in his eyes. He intends to cause me pain, to shatter my bones there and then. If he can, he will gladly send me to the after life to be with his best friend. Right now, I want nothing more than that. “You used West to come back into society after you were disgraced, and now he’s dead.” I have to get out of here. I struggle, wriggling in his hold until I forcefully pull away from him. I can barely feel my own wrist. “I will not stand here and listen to you insult everything I shared with my husband. I will not!” I turn on my heels and stomp out of the cafe. Cobra follows me behind. “Listen up everyone!” I hear his voice over all the insanity in the parking lot. Everybody goes still, every head turns in our direction. Some even get out of their cars, causing a small crowd to gather around us. Cobra points at me. “This witch has caused the death of so many people. It’s no secret that people who get close to her die. Spread word around! Tell the men in your life,” Why? Why is he doing this? “She will try to latch onto another man now that her husband is dead, but if you let her, you will also face the same cruel fate.” He takes several steps forward, towering over me menacingly. He grins, the fury in his eyes making way for mischief. “To be forewarned is to be forearmed.” I stare into his eyes, swallowing every bit of his anger, his terror. He was one of the people I thought I would be able to lean on now that West is gone. I saw him as a friend, just as much as West saw him as a brother. I was wrong and foolish, but not anymore. “West would turn in his grave for this,” I seethe. “You’ve insulted me, embarrassed me in front of the very people he risked his life for. You,” it’s my turn to point a finger at him. “Have insulted his memory, and you’ll only have your conscience to contend with.” Cobra scoffs. “Insulted his memory?” He grabs hold of my finger and twists it with brute force. I let out a scream, falling backwards until my back touches the ground. Pain shoots up my spine. I curl myself inwards and close my eyes. It’s all a nightmare, Mia. Close your eyes and count to ten, and it’ll disappear. This isn’t real, none of it is. “It’s only because of that memory I haven’t f****d you right here for everyone to see! You have no idea how much I want to reduce you to the w***e you—“ Cobra doesn’t finish his sentence. Instead, he cries out in pain. My eyes shoot open. He isn’t standing in front of me anymore, or hovering over me. Instead, he’s… I look around. He’s on the ground, with a bloodied nose and face. Someone is punching him. A man. A really big one from the size of his fists. Cobra’s mouth is open, he’s screaming but I can’t hear the words coming out of his lips. His hands press together in a plea, fear sparkles in his eyes. But the man doesn’t stop. He continues, over and over again. If he doesn’t stop, Cobra is going to die. I struggle to rise to my feet. I can’t let that happen. Cobra was angry, and that anger made him say terrible things to me. His last statement was probably just rage and madness caused by the haze. If he dies in front of me, West might never forgive me even in death. I rush to his assailant, gripping him on the shoulders. “Stop! Please!” At the sound of my voice, his fist hangs mid air. My heart races in my chest as the man turns slowly towards me, making seconds feel like five years. When his eyes rest on mine, my breath hitches. “Xa…Xander?” I stutter.
