“What the heck did you just say, Mitch? Drew left you?” Ava’s loud voice reverberated through the speaker.
“Yes, he is gone.”
“Why would he leave you? I still don't get it, girl. Please tell me everything.”
“He’s left. Drew left me heartbroken. I don't think I can't feel anything again.” Mitchelle's soft sobs could be heard on the other side.
“Please calm down and tell me what's going on. Where did Drew go to? Did he travel?” Ava’s worried voice came through.
“He..h..he..he said it's the end of us. I caught him cheating and he called it quits.”
“Hold on, girl. Just give me a few minutes and I will be at your house.”
Mitchelle's sobs grew louder, and she struggled to catch her breath.
She waited for Ava to arrive, Mitchelle's eyes wandered around the empty, silent mansion. The memories of her life with Drew flooded her mind, and she felt like she was drowning in grief.
Drew had cheated on her truly. He had a wife outside and two children who looked about four or five years old. But then, her heart could not help but ache not just for the fact that he cheated and lied to her but that the only man she ever loved with her all was gone.
She slowly got up from the floor, her legs trembling beneath her. Mitchelle stumbled towards the couch, collapsing onto the soft cushions. She buried her face in a pillow, letting out a mournful cry.
The sound of the doorbell pierced the air, and Mitchelle lifted her head, wiping her tears with the back of her hand. She stumbled towards the entrance, opening the door to reveal Ava's concerned face.
Ava rushed into the mansion, enveloping Mitchelle in a tight hug. "Oh, girl, I'm so sorry. What the heck did that jerk do to you?"
Mitchelle's voice was barely audible, but Ava held her close.
“You know I have never been in support of Drew right from the start. Who would have thought he would have the nerves to cheat on you with another woman?” Ava spat out angrily.
“He didn't just cheat, she is his wife and they have two children together already.”
“What!”
Ava's eyes widened in shock, her face pale with rage. "He's married? With kids? That son of a..."
She trailed off, her voice choked with anger. Mitchelle nodded, tears streaming down her face. Ava's expression softened, and she pulled Mitchelle into a tighter hug.
"Oh, Mitch, I'm so sorry. I'm here for you, and I'm not going anywhere."
As Ava held her, Mitchelle felt a wave of comfort wash over her. She clung to Ava, letting out a sob that shook her entire body.
Ava stroked her hair, whispering words of comfort in her ear. "We'll get through this, Mitch. We'll get through this together."
As they stood there, holding each other, the doorbell rang again. Ava pulled back, a questioning look on her face. "Are you expecting someone?"
Mitchelle shook her head, confusion etched on her face. "No, I don't think so."
Ava's expression turned wary. "I'll get it."
She walked towards the entrance, her eyes scanning the hallway before opening the door. Mitchelle followed close behind.
As Ava opened the door, a tall, suited man stood on the porch, a briefcase in his hand. "Can I help you?" Ava asked, her tone guarded.
The man's eyes flicked to Mitchelle before returning to Ava. "I'm here to see Mitchelle Crystal. I have some documents to deliver."
"What documents?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
The man's expression was neutral. "Divorce papers, ma'am.”
Before Mitchelle would step forward to collect the document, Ava’s hands had gone ahead and snatched the brown paper out of the man’s hand.
She tore the paper into different sizes and threw it at the man in rage.
“You seem to be his lawyer. Now, go back and tell that jerk who sent you that he is not going to call the quits. We would send him our lawyer soon.”
The lawyer's jaw dropped down in shock as he stared at the pieces of paper scattered on the floor and the two women in front of him.
“Ma'am, you can't just…”
Before he could complete his sentence, the door slammed into his face, making him step back shakily.
Mitchelle's eyes widened in surprise as she turned to Ava. "Why did you tear the papers? We should have just refused to accept them or something."
Ava's face was still flushed with anger. "I couldn't help it, Mitch. I was so angry when I saw those papers. He thinks he can just divorce you like a piece of rag? After what he's done? You should be the one sending him those papers.”
Mitchelle nodded, understanding Ava's rage. But before they could continue discussing the matter, Mitchelle's phone rang, shrill and insistent.
She hesitated for a moment before answering, her heart sinking as she saw the caller ID. It was her bank.
"Hello?" Mitchelle said, trying to keep her voice steady.
"Good afternoon, Ms. Crystal. This is your bank calling. We've noticed a large withdrawal from your joint account with your husband. We wanted to verify if this transaction was authorized by you."
Mitchelle's eyes met Ava's, and she felt a cold dread creeping up her spine. "When and what's the amount of the withdrawal?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
There was a pause on the other end of the line before the bank representative replied, "Today. It's a substantial amount, ma'am. $800,000 has been withdrawn from your account.”
There was brief silence as she stared into space, holding the phone to ear with as much as just the top of her fingers.
This was too much bad news in just one day.
“Ma'am, are you still there?”
Ava took the phone from her, rescuing the person on the other end.
“She'll get back to you soon.” She said and hung up on the line.
Ava's eyes locked onto Mitchelle's, concern etched on her face. "Mitch, we need to talk about this. He's drained your account."
Mitchelle's expression was numb, her eyes vacant. "It's not just the money, Ava. It's everything. My life, my marriage... it's all been a lie."
