CH.3 Unwanted Visitor

I glared at the box in her hands and inquired, “And what is this?” I forced myself to stay calm. I didn’t want her to see how much she had ruined my anniversary. She rolled her eyes and replied, “It’s a gown for tonight's party!” “Which party?” I asked, genuinely puzzled. Jane explained, “What? Didn’t you know? The company is launching a new branded car addition! How could the CEO’s wife not know about such an event?” She mocked. My face paled. Had he really kept me in the dark about something so important? Jane continued, yawning, “Lucas asked me to deliver the gown to you since I took the rest of the day off. We stayed up all night, and I need to rest before preparing for tonight’s party.” She then glared at my pale face and added, “Oh dear, I’m so sorry. Did I ruin your anniversary night? I didn’t mean to take him from you, but… when you marry a man like Lucas, you should expect he won’t be just for you!” I knew what she was trying to do, and I wasn’t going to fall for her scheme. If I told Lucas about her comments, she wouldn’t deny them. Instead, she would shed tears and claim she meant work, insisting I should share him with his job. I managed a faint smile and replied calmly, “If you’ll excuse me, I’m busy and have no time to chat.” Before she could respond, I shut the door. From the peephole, I saw her face turn red with anger before she turned and left. In the evening. “Mommy! You are so beautiful!” my son Zaak said shyly. I gently pinched his cheek and laughed, “Thank you, my little man.” “Mommy, look! I am a princess,” his twin Mella said, always seeking attention. “Stop, guys! Let me finish your mother’s makeup,” Luisa ordered. “Aunt Luisa, can you dress me like Mom? I want to go to the party with her,” Mella pleaded. I patted her head and murmured calmly, “Honey, I promise I’ll take you to Liza’s baby shower party. But this one is for adults only and will be very boring.” She shrugged and returned to applying lipstick to her small rosy lips. I knew if I told Lucas that Mella wanted to attend the party, he would agree. He treated her like a princess, pampering her as if she were easily broken. Luisa whispered, “Why do I see sadness in your eyes? Did last night not go well?” I didn’t reply, and she didn’t press further. I think she already knew the truth. I hadn’t planned to go, but I didn’t want Jane to think she had driven a wedge between Lucas and me. I preferred to show up rather than hide. “We’re done!” Luisa said, clapping her hands happily. She looked me up and down and exclaimed, “My son-in-law really does have good taste; your dress is fabulous!” For the last three years, Lucas had picked out my gown for every party. Taking care of twins wasn’t easy, and he always tried to help however he could. I couldn’t deny him that. Maybe it was the only thing he still did for me. Or perhaps he was just making sure I wore something suitable. “Mommy, will Daddy come and pick you up on a white horse like the prince did for Cinderella?” Mella asked excitedly. I laughed, “No darling, he’ll pick me up by car.” She thought for a moment, then added, “Okay, but when he takes me to the baby shower, I want him to use a white horse!” A text message chimed in. (I sent you the driver.) It was from Lucas. That meant he wouldn’t come! Should I still go? “Mrs. Marshall, the driver is waiting for you,” said Mrs. Berkens, the housekeeper. “Why didn’t Daddy come to pick you up?” Zaak asked. He looked at me with his blue eyes, identical to his father’s. I bent down to his level and explained, “He must be preparing a surprise for me,” then gestured with my finger on my lips and continued, “Shh, don’t tell him we figured out his plan!” He shook his head, kissed my cheek, and said, “I won’t, I promise!” I smiled at his innocence. I knew I shouldn’t go, but I didn’t want the kids to sense that something was wrong in our family. I didn’t want to see them sad or frustrated. All the way to the party venue, I held back my tears, telling myself repeatedly that I wasn’t going to cry. He hadn’t even bothered to explain himself! I entered the venue, feeling everyone’s eyes on me. I was used to people staring once they knew I was the CEO’s wife. I smiled at some guests and started looking for Lucas, who hadn’t even waited for me at the doorway. “Hey, Naya!” I turned to see my parents-in-law. “I see you came alone!” said Kathrin, my mother-in-law. Before I could respond, her husband said, “Lucas must be busy. Today is an important day for our company, and a wife should support her husband, even psychologically.” “Yeah, not just spend his money!” Kathrin confirmed. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. I knew they looked down on me, considering me a gold digger. If it weren’t for the twins, who they adored, they would have forced Lucas to divorce me. I smiled calmly and said, “Mom, Dad, I must excuse myself. I want to find Lucas.” Without waiting for their reply, I turned and left. I scanned the room until my eyes found Lucas and, of course, Jane clinging to him like glue. But my heart s kipped a beat when I noticed what was happening.
