CHAPTER1
Emilia came down from the seat of her red saloon car, turning off the engine, she opened the door and stretched out her long legs on the marble floor of her mother’s garage. She stood in her full height of about six foot tall, with a complementing long neck and slender body physique.
Emilia have a milk skin tone with smooth and soft skin feel. She would readily pass for a beauty queen, that’s if she actually have the intent to contest for one. She bowed her head downwards as the chilly air kissed her forehead. the weather was cold she noticed and bending over, Emilia picked up her handbag before locking the car door.
Shivering slightly in the frosty march air, she opened the door of the cottage owned by her mother in the quiet mews.
Inside, all was warmth and light, Emilia smiled appreciatively in the pleasant atmosphere, her mother’s house-help was bringing in the trolley of tea when she sighted her, and smilingly said “how are you my doll” she is used to calling Emilia my doll, and she has lived with them since Emilia was two years, now being all grown up at the age of twenty-five, she was already considered a woman.
Entering the sitting room, she greeted her mother and sat down. She always felt her mother a stranger whenever she came to visit, maybe because she was a constant reminder, painfully designed to remind her about her failed marriage with Divine, which lasted for only a year but with a heartbreak to last her a lifetime.
Mrs. Emmanuel crossed the room and bestowed a kiss on her first daughter’s cold cheek.
“It’s lovely seeing you again mum” said Emilia.
“It’s been long since I did so” she added.
Sitting down, she asked her mother what prompted the call she made across to her at the office, when she was busy. Her mother looked at her, sighed and said sadly “why can’t you for once consider I and your sister as your only kith and kin?, you really ought to care about us you know”.
“But I do” was all Emilia could say, not to start a fuss with her mother again.
“So?” she asked her mother, now looking her straight in the eyes.
“Have you seen Divine lately?” began Mrs Emmanuel in a casual tone.
“Divine?” Emilia waited some seconds to gather her suddenly shocked senses together. “No” she replied slowly, “You know we never meet or is it because of the notice of his engagement on the newspaper?” she asked.
Mrs. Emmanuel shrugged and said, “Well, I saw that also, but that was not my reason for asking. I just wanted to know if he objected to Helen going out with Henry?”
“What?” Emilia asked, as she looked at her mum with a shocked face and widely opened eyes, she would have loved to believe her mother was joking, but the look on her mother’s face said otherwise.
How can Helen be so heartless as to think of befriending a naughty person as Henry, and can’t she remember that he is a married man? She thought out loud.
The reckless Henry in question is the second son of the Waterland family, and also the younger brother of Divine, Emilia’s ex husband. He was known to have been married five years earlier before she got married to Divine. The marriages of the Waterland family is usually a top news in the city of New York, due to the generational bouyance and wealthiness of the family.
The Waterlands is a family of billionaires. Divine grandfather was a wealthy businessman who deals in the sales of cars, with different branches in twenty countries across the globe, and his first and only son was a tech guru who built a company which developed a micro-chip that helps to manage and export human thoughts into robots. He made a fortune from his career in tech, before getting married at a later age. His wife was believed to have been 20 years younger than him. Mrs. Waterland gave birth to Divine, three years after her marriage, then Henry came into the picture on the sixth year of their marriage.
Back to the present, Divine is currently a practicing Medical Doctor with two multi renowned hospitals at the heart of New York and Germany named ClearHealth. His younger brother, Henry is an Attorney that manages all the family businesses and hospitals.
“I don’t think Divine will take this lightly, knowing his brother, a married man of thirty-six years is actually seeing a teenager like Helen, who recently turned eighteen, just two months ago. Facing her mother, she asked out loud, “How do I come into all these?”.
“Emilia darling, you are the only one in this situation who can help your sister out of this imbalanced entanglement, by talking to Divine to desist his brother from seeing your sister”. “Please, help us out of this very one my darling, please be the sweetheart you always are”.
Emilia knew her mother well enough, to be conversant with her ways of getting things from others, and she is also a good flatterer when the need for such arises.
Emilia thought about it for a minute, it has been long since she last saw and heard from her ex husband, Divine. How is she supposed to start a conversation with him after so long a time? She almost refused to do it, but remembering her younger sister and how stubborn she can be about things, she found herself saying “Yes mum, I will do it”.
Standing up almost immediately, she quietly kissed her mother and left the cottage, before her mother finds something else to start a conversation with. Emilia headed to her flat, where she usually pour out her emotions, all in the shelter of her flat.
Haven promised her mother to call Divine, she decided to wait awhile towards evening when she knew he would be at home to call his residence number.
To keep herself occupied, she went down memory lane on how she had meet Divine, remembering his handsome face, his strong arms and well built frame. She remembered how she first met him at a ball organized by the Franklin family, how when he entered, the room and everyone in it seemed to pave way for him to pass. When she glanced, she saw him, and it was love at first sight, but had to hide it from her features for it not to be obvious.
She also remembered how that same day, he asked her to dance with him, a request she gladly obliged, that was how they started their relationship and before everybody could recognize what was happening, he married her and then the divorce…
