Well, That was Awkward

Lucas walked me out of class to my locker after class on Friday "So, you want me to pick you and Jess up at your place around 7pm to go over to Zacks?" he asks. "Yeah sure, that would work" I reply with a smile. I look over my shoulder I see Austin, Jess and Zack walking towards us. "Hey" Lucas says to them. "Hey" Jess and Austin both reply Zack gives a quick grin. "So, your coming to hangout with us?" Austin asks Lucas. "Yeah, should be a good time" Lucas replies giving me a smile, I return the smile but can't help noticing Zack feels weird about the whole hanging out thing. "Zack has a wicked horror movie collection" I add trying to get Zack to say anything."Oh cool, horror movies are awesome" Lucas replies smiling at Zack. "Yeah, they are my favourite" Zack replies not really even looking at Lucas. Well, at least he tried I thought. "I'm going to head to my locker, go home have something to eat, I'll text you later Sam" Lucas says giving a wave and walking away. I let out a small sigh "Could you have made it anymore awkward?" I ask Zack giving him a look "Sorry, I don't really know what to say to the guy" he replies looking behind him where Lucas was headed. "We'll you could try, I want us to all get along" I tell him still giving him a serious look. He nods as we are walking out of the school. Jess and I head to my car as Zack and Austin heads to theirs.

Jess and I get to my house mom was standing in the kitchen "Hi girls" my mom sings out to us "I made a homemade pizza for you guys for supper, I'm going to see your father, see you Sunday" she adds giving me a kiss on the top of my head. "Thanks, see you then" I say to her as she's walking down the stairs and out the front door. We grab plates and sit at the kitchen table to have some pizza "You think tonight will be a disaster?" Jess asks taking a bite of her food. "I really hope not, not going to lie I'm really nervous" I reply taking the pepperoni off my pizza and eating it first. "I think it may be a little awkward at first, but I think we can manage to get them to get along, Austin and Lucas played sports together so they are kind of friends, Austin will probably talk to Zack anyway, you want some water?" she says walking to the fridge to get some water. "I just hope something works out, and yeah sure" I reply still picking apart my pizza.

Around 6:50pm I phone went off, as Jess and I were just doing some homework it was a text from Lucas

Hey, I'm ready whenever you girls are.

Hi, we are good, just finishing doing some homework. We'll meet you outside.

Okay, on my way

"Has he been in your room yet?" Jess asks as we put our books back in our book bags."No" I reply rolling my eyes at her. She laughs "It was just a question". We walk upstairs and out the door, Lucas was already pulling into my driveway. We get in his truck "Hey, girls" he says giving us both a smile. His smile always makes me feel warm "Hey"Jess replies "I love your truck" she adds. "Thanks, my father bought it for me last summer" he replies to her still smiling. I was watching the both of them, they are already getting along but I knew Jess wouldn't be a problem she's nice to everyone unless your mean to her, or you do anything to her friends, or family. "Earth to Sam, you okay?" Lucas asks me. "Yeah, sorry was just lost in thought"I reply giving him a quick smile."She's nervous for tonight" Jess replies from the backseat."Don't worry Sam, I'll be on my best behaviour" he says putting his hand on my shoulder making my heart jump."So, where am I going?" he asks backing out of my driveway "Left, and down the road til you see a log house to the right" I reply. "Right on" he replies.

We get to Zacks house, my stomach is in knots. Jess stops me as we get out of the truck "Hey, it will be okay I got your back" she says giving me a hug. "Thanks" I reply hugging her back. We walk into Zacks house through the kitchen and up the stairs, Austin and Zack are sitting on the couch talking about going snowboarding this winter. "Hey"Jess says running over to Austin, sitting on his lap and placing a kiss on his lips. Zack looks over at me and Lucas who are standing in the doorway "Hey, you can come in" Zack says looking at Lucas. Lucas sits on the bed and I sit in between Zack and Austin."Nice room" Lucas says looking around. "Thanks" Zack replies. "So, are you not playing sports this year Luc?" Austin asks. "Nah, I decided this year I didn't want to. My father forced me to play sports since I was kid. This is my last year of high school I want to have fun." he replies still looking around. "Are you going to play any?" he adds. "Probably basketball" Austin replies."You never got into sports?"Lucas asks Zack "No, wasn't my thing" he replies not even looking at him."Does everyone want to walk down to the beach since it's still nice enough to go?" Jess asks I was totally down "Yes" I reply Lucas was quick to reply too "I'm down he says."Don't need to twist my arm"Austin says kissing Jess's cheek "I guess so" Zack replies looking down at the floor. I give him a nudge in the arm, he looks at me and gives me a small smile. The beach is literally in Zacks backyard.

We all walked to the beach Jess and I sit on the sand looking out towards the water, the smell of the salt water and the sound of the waves crashing makes me feel more at ease. I take it all in taking slow deep breathes with my eyes closed. I was startled by an arm touching my shoulder, I screamed scaring Jess. She jumped up "What, what is wrong?" she asks. Lucas is laughing behind me "I'm so sorry, I didn't know you weren't paying attention" Austin and Zack are looking at us from by the water "Not funny" I said collecting myself. "Come join us"Jess says to Zack and Austin, Austin comes and sits next to Jess Lucas is sitting next to me "Zack, come on" I say looking at him "No thanks, I'm good" he replies not even looking at me he's skipping rocks on the water I can't help but feel a little sad, he's really not going to attempt to be friends with Lucas."I should go talk to him"I say looking at Jess "Yeah, kay good luck" she replies giving me a sad look. "Don't worry Lucas you can join us" Austin says making Lucas laugh a little bit. I walked over to Zack "Can we talk?" I ask him "Sure, whats up?" he replies still skipping rocks. "Is this okay, having Lucas hangout with us? You're not even trying to communicate with him, let alone acknowledge his presence" I said being more upfront then I usually would, but this was bugging me."I have nothing to say to him Sam, we are not friends, and probably never will. The only reason he's here is because of you" Zack replies now standing right in front of my face."Think about it, he only cares about you, he doesn't give a s**t about me, I'm not going to bother wasting my time with someone who doesn't want to be my friend" he adds. My heart dropped a little bit by his response, Zack was never one to get all serious like that, he was quiet and was nice to mostly everyone, so why is he so bothered by Lucas? I let out a long sigh "I never asked you to be his friend Zack, I just wanted all of us to be able to hangout, but I guess that's not going to happen" I reply walking away from him. Zack just shook his head and looked away from me. I went and sat back down with Jess, Austin and Lucas "How did you make out" Jess asks. "Don't ask" I reply looking down at the sand. "He'll come around Sam, Zack is weird when it comes to guys trying to be friendly when he knows they don't want to be his friend."Austin says giving me a smile. At that point Lucas clued in "Hey, so that's me your referring to?" he asks. "Kind of yeah, don't take it personal. I'll talk to him later on" Austin replies.

Zack randomly starts walking back to his house not saying anything to us "We'll this was a Friday night wasted" I said looking back at him feeling a little hurt. "It's fine" Lucas says giving my back a little rub making me feel a little better."I think I want to go home"I said looking at Jess "You can stay here with Austin, I can come back and get you later on" giving her a smile. "Are you sure?" she asks. "Yeah, I don't want to ruin your time together" giving her a nudge."Text me later" I say getting up. Lucas gets up after me "We'll this was fun" he says with a little chuckle."Sorry man, next time will be better"Austin replies. Lucas gives a small smile as he walks behind me to his truck.

Lucas pulls into my driveway to drop me off "You sure you don't want to hangout for a bit longer?" he asks. "No, sorry I'd rather be alone right now. I wasn't expecting it to be this awkward" I reply looking at him. "It's okay, don't beat yourself up over it Sam" he says reaching his arm out behind me to pull me in for a hug. As he pulls me in closer to him, I can feel my insides pushing my sadness regarding the situation tonight being pushed behind me, like it didn't bother me anymore, well for now anyway. He finally lets me go "Well, I guess I'll let you go inside now, if you change your mind you know how to reach me" he says giving my cheek a stroke at that exact moment I felt his touch on my face my stomach dropped, I never felt butterflies like that intense before. I knew he could tell by my facial expression his touch got to me, he smiled at me looking deep in my eyes. I collected myself and pulled back "Sorry, I couldn't help it" he says to me still smiling "It's okay, but I should go now" I said opening up the truck door "Night" I add jumping out of the truck and closing the door behind me What the hell just happened I thought to myself walking towards my front door. Did we just have a moment?
