Class Assignment

It was Wednesday afternoon during last period our Life Skills teacher Mrs. Carnahan assigned us partners for a small assignment. She ended up assigning Lucas and I together. Great I thought. The assignment was due at the end of class tomorrow. Lucas took a seat in front of me "We can get together tonight to get it done if you want?" he asks. I took a second to think about it. "Yeah, sure. Your place or mine?" I reply. "Mine, my mom will actually be home, she'd love to meet you" he says with a smile. I can't help but smile when he looks at me like that I can feel my insides flutter like a butterfly. We are friends so why do I feel mushy around him sometimes? "Great, I will be at your place around 6pm?" I tell him. "Yeah, that works" he replies. In the meantime we figured out a plan for the assignment which we had to come up with our own ideas for building our own business's and budgeting. We decided on a gym and spa combined.

The bell rang, we pack up our things and walk out the classroom door. "I'll see you 6pm" Lucas says walking to his locker which was up the hall from mine. Perfect I can ask him about Zack tonight since I didn't bring it up yet I think to myself walking to my locker. I was greeted by Jess at my locker "I got an idea for a girls night maybe next weekend" she advises. "What's up?" I ask opening my locker. "Going to a club" she says with a smile. "You're are serious, how are we going to get into a club?" I ask "It's a place for teens, they just opened up Friday night is the opening night, but I'm sure we are going to all hangout this weekend, so we will make plans for next" she advises. "Okay, Jess you twisted my arm" smiling at her. Zack and Austin approach us, and the four of us walk out of the school. "I'm so glad this day is over with, I'll be even happier when Friday gets here" Austin says putting his arm around Jess's shoulder she leans in and gives him a kiss on the cheek. "I imagine we are all going to Zacks Friday as usual, with Jess sleeping at my place?" I ask looking back at Jess."Of course" she says with a smile "oh, which reminds me, did you talk to Lucas yet?" she adds. Saying his name made Zacks face tighten. "No, I'll mention it tonight" I reply. "Wait, you're hanging out with him on a school night?" Austin asks looking shocked. "Yeah, we are homework partners meeting at his place at 6" I advise. I don't even have to look at Zack to know he's not impressed. "Hey, Zack how is your brother doing anyway?" I ask to change the subject "He's good, I'm going to see him next weekend, so I'll be gone" he replies relaxing a bit. "Oh, I'm glad for you, but sad at the same time, it's going to be different not hanging out like we always do" I said looking down at the ground. "Don't worry, I'll be texting you" he says giving me a smile which makes me feel a lot better. We all part, I drive Jess home, and head home myself.

My mom is making spaghetti and garlic bread for supper. "Hey, how was school today?" she asks. "Not too bad, I gotta go to Lucas's for homework later if that's okay, if not I can ask him to come here instead". I advise her but also making sure it's okay. "That's fine, honey" she replies giving me a smile. "Don't worry, I won't be late, probably two hours most" I tell her grabbing a plate to grab some food. "No worries, if your going to be later, just text me". I smile at her. Mom is always so understanding.

6pm rolls around, I pull into Lucas's driveway. I let out a sigh as I walk up to his front door to ring the door bell. Lucas opens the door, smiling from ear to ear face all lit up "Hey, Sammy come in" I return the smile "Thanks". He leads the way to the kitchen, I'm greeted by his mother who has shoulder length dirty blonde hair and green eyes tall and skinny I can see who he gets his looks from "Oh my, this must be Sam, I'm so glad to finally meet you, I'm Luc's mother, Cynthia" she says walking towards me with open arms giving me hug. "Hi" I manage to squeak out.She let's me go "I'll leave you two be I'll be downstairs" she advised as she's walking out of the kitchen. Lucas is laughing I'm guessing by the noise that has come out of my mouth. I felt a little embarrassed and my face went red."We can work down here at the table if it makes you feel more comfortable?" he asks. "Yeah, that's fine" I reply. We walk over to the table and sit next to each other, I pull out our sheets for the assignment "Did you want anything to drink" he asks "Just water, thanks" I reply. He brings me a bottle of water and takes a seat to my left we get started.

Around 8pm we finish the assignment which was pretty painless upstairs gym, and downstairs has a spa and massage therapy. "So, I have to ask what exactly did you tell your mom about me?" I asked feeling very curious. I can see I hit a sensitive topic as he went very red, and wouldn't look at me "Well, I told her we had a class together and that we were friends" he replies. A part of me feels like that's not all he said, but didn't want to push it. "I have something else I want to talk to you about" I tell him looking serious. "Okay, what's up" he replies now looking worried. "Is there anything I should know with you and Zack?" I ask. He looks very surprised "No, why did he tell you otherwise?" he asks. "No, I just want to know if there is any reason why you two don't talk?" he looks down towards the floor "We'll I'm sure it has to do with me being an ass to him in middle school, he hates me, and I don't really blame him" he tells me finally looking at me. "What if I told you, I talked to him and he is okay with all of us hanging out?" I said giving him a smile. Lucas looked at me like I just pinched him in the arm "You're being serious right now, he actually agreed?" he asks. "Yeah, wasn't easy but if your not busy Friday night, you're invited" I advise. "Well, lucky for you I'm free Friday but in return I want to take you out Saturday night" he says giving me a hard look. My jaw dropped did he seriously just ask me out in return for trying to get him and Zack to be friends? "You're joking right?" I manage to ask. He no longer has a smile on his face, and realizes he crossed a line. "I'm sorry, was that too straight forward, what about just as friends?" I get up from the table, packing up my things into my book bag not saying anything. "Sam, please don't be mad for asking, can you blame me for wanting to be around you more?" I stopped what I was doing, those last words hit me in the heart I looked at him "As friends only" I'm pretty sure I just made his night "Thank you" he says smiling from ear to ear. "I should probably get home" I said looking at the time. "See you tomorrow" I add walking towards the front door. He walks me out "Don't worry Sam, I will make it up to Zack" I don't say anything back just give him a quick smile as I get into my car.

I got home, went to my bedroom to change into pj shorts and a tank top and crawl into bed I send Jess a quick text

Hey, so good news Lucas is down for hanging out, other news he asked me out ...

NO WAY.. what did you say?

Well, we are going out as friends only, I made that pretty clear. He liked that better then not going out at all.

I'm surprised you agreed in the first place, I know you guys hung out before, but this is different he actually asked you out on a date

I know, I'm shocked. I thought all he wanted was to be friends..

Ahh, are you starting to reconsider feelings Sam????

What, no or at least I don't think so ..

OMG Sam.. are you starting to like Lucas?

I don't know Jess.. I'm beyond confused right now.. I'm going to bed I'll talk to you in the morning

I didn't fall asleep right away, I just laid there staring at the ceiling for what seems like hours.I wasn't sure what I was feeling, I enjoyed spending time with Lucas,as much as I did with Zack but if things don't go well Friday, it could up bad meaning I will have to hangout with each of them separately. Or worse losing one of their friendships.
