One undeniable fact was that she was hungry, and she would have to make her way downstairs for food whether she wanted to see George or not. It was late, and there had been no knock on the door or a note under it to say that breakfast was outside. She would have to make her own. She got dressed and made her way out of the room. As soon as Claire entered the landing, she noticed the difference to the day before. No lights were on anywhere even though the day was gloomy. The silence of the house was more deafening than ever before. Once Claire reached the snug at the bottom of the steps, she could hear sounds from the ballroom.
