CHAPTER 11 She had either slept a thousand years – or at least a few months – or something very strange had happened. She heard birds singing outside, and when she opened her eyes, Claire saw light streaming in through the gap in the curtains. The room didn’t feel chilly although the fire had died long ago. It could be sunny in winter too, but birds didn’t sing that enthusiastically, did they? Claire slipped her feet into the slippers next to her bed and walked over to pull the curtains open.
