CHAPTER 15 The storm went on for several days, and there was no sign of George. It started to feel like a punishment. Claire went out once, briefly, to collect more firewood and coal from the shed outside. She hurried back and barricaded herself inside the house again. With no one to talk to, cabin fever started to kick in. In between trips to the library, the kitchen and her little gym, Claire wandered around the house checking all the doors in the vain hope that some of them might have unlocked themselves. They hadn’t. She ended up back in the basement. She walked around looking at all the pieces of equipment in the main room, inspecting – and using – the washing machine and tumble dryer, and eventually ended up in the smallest room at the bottom of the steps.
