Prologue
Alivia Conley is 24 years old and fresh out of training at Quantico. Upon graduation she was sent to the Los Angeles field office to start her career as a special agent. Most of her life was spent bouncing around foster families, so starting over in a new city was already second nature for her. She was thrilled to be placed in LA, it was one of the locations she had hoped for. Mainly because she wanted to be as far away as possible from any place she lived as a child. Not because she was mistreated, but she never felt at home with any of her families. She always felt like an outsider, like something was missing.
LA was a fresh start. A chance to create a life where she felt comfortable and in control. During her time at Quantico she started to feel more like herself. She thrived in the stressful, fast paced environment and knew from her first day there that she had picked the perfect profession. She had originally planned on joining the military, but the father in her last foster family, Mark, was a retired CIA agent. He encouraged her to pursue this path and helped her apply for scholarships to get her bachelor’s degree. Alivia still kept in contact with him and his wife. They were the closest thing to a real family she has ever experienced. Before moving to LA Alivia visited them in Indiana for a few days. Mark was so proud of everything she had accomplished and insisted that she come back for the holidays whenever possible. Time off would be hard to come by though, especially in her first few years.
Her first few months in LA went by in a flash. Alivia spent at least 50 hours a week in the office on top of the time she would spend in the gym. Fitness requirements were rigorous in her line of work. At Quantico she excelled at the fitness and combat portions of her training. She was surprisingly strong for her size, which was most likely a contributing factor for her getting placed at one of the larger offices.
The pieces of her life had finally begun to fall into place. Something about LA felt like home. There was only one problem and Alivia couldn’t quite figure it out. She had felt on edge since she stepped foot in this city. All of her senses felt like they were on high alert. Spending time in the gym would take the edge off, but she hadn’t been able to find any way to truly relax. For a while she thought this could be from the nerves of starting a new job, but the feeling had yet to fade. In fact it almost seemed to be getting worse daily.
