Chapter 3: One Night Stand? "Welcome to your hideout," her friend said, his eyes smiling. "You'll be safe here." Ava nodded, her eyes filling with tears. She knew she had found a refuge, a safe place, for now. Ava woke up to the sound of birds chirping outside her window. She stretched, feeling a sense of peace wash over her. The cabin was cozy, with a fireplace crackling in the corner. Her friend, Max, was sitting at the kitchen table, sipping coffee. "Good morning," he said, smiling. "You're safe here. Ryder won't find you." She nodded "Hold up, how did you know about Ryder?!" Ava asked almost immediately. "you kept saying his name last night, Ava. I assumed he was the reason you needed help" Max said still sipping his coffee. " Thank you, Max. I owe you my life." Max's expression turned serious. "You don't owe me anything. But we need to talk about what happened." Ava took a deep breath, recounting her story. Max listened intently, his eyes narrowing. "Ryder's involved in some dangerous stuff. We need to get you out of here, somewhere he'll never think to look." Ava's heart skipped a beat. "Where?" Max's smile was reassuring. "Here, have a sip" he stretched out a cup of coffee. As they sipped their coffee, Ava felt a sense of hope. She knew she was in good hands with Max. Ava spent the next few days in hiding, her mind racing with thoughts of Ryder and RH 50. She knew she couldn't stay hidden forever, but for now, it was her only option. Max brought her food and supplies, keeping her updated on the situation back in the city. "Ryder's going crazy, Ava. He's offering a huge reward for any information leading to your capture." Ava's eyes narrowed. "He'll stop at nothing, will he?" Max nodded. "He's desperate. But you're safe here. No one knows where you are." Ava sighed, feeling a mix of emotions. She was grateful to Max, but she knew she couldn't rely on him forever. She had to come up with a plan, a way to take down Ryder and expose the truth about RH 50 once and for all. As she paced the small hideout, an idea began to form in her mind. It was risky, but it just might work. She turned to Max, a determined look on her face. "Max, I need your help." Max raised an eyebrow. "What is going through your mind?" Ava smiled, a fierce glint in her eye. She had a plan. But little did she know, Ryder's reach was far greater than she imagined. And he would stop at nothing to get what he wanted. Max's eyes sparkled with determination, curiosity and questionable glares. "We'll get you a new identity?" Ava's heart raced with excitement. "Yes! Then I can work undercover until I have concrete evidence against them." Max leaned in, his voice low. "I think I have connections, people who owe me favors. They'll give you a new name, a new face, a new everything." Ava got curious "And where will I go?" Max smiled. "A small town in the Midwest, where you can stay for a while" Ava nodded, her heart filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Max. Thank you for saving me." Max's expression turned serious. "We're not out of the woods yet, Ava. Ryder will stop at nothing to find you. We need to be careful, stay one step ahead." Ava's eyes locked on Max's, her determination evident. "I'm ready. Let's do this." And with that, they have a plan and it was set in motion. Ava's transformation began, a new life unfolding like a blank canvas. Ava gazed at her reflection, barely recognizing the person staring back. Her hair was now a rich black color, her eyes a deep green. She had a new name, Emily, and a new life in the small town of Oakdale. Max had done an excellent job, creating a backstory and credentials that would withstand even the most intense scrutiny. Ava/Emily was now a freelance writer, living a quiet life in the Midwest. But she was still determined and working to bring down the Bruno's, undercover. As she settled into her new routine, Ava/Emily felt a sense of peace wash over her. She was finally safe, finally free from Ryder's grasp. But as she walked through the charming streets of Oakdale, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched. She quickened her pace, her heart racing with every step. Suddenly, a hand grasped her shoulder, spinning her around. Ava/Emily's eyes widened as she faced a stranger, his eyes piercing and familiar. She knew she couldn't outrun him, not in this small town where everyone knew each other's business. "Who are you?" she demanded, trying to keep her voice steady. The stranger smiled, his eyes glinting with amusement. "You know who I am, Emily. I'm the one who's been searching for you." Ava/Emily's eyes narrowed. "Ryder sent you." "Don't say a word, just follow me" he ordered. Ava already knew it was one of Ryder's goons. He held her hand firmly and she followed still. "You're a hard woman to find, Emily," Ryder said, his voice low and menacing. Ryder's eyes roamed over Ava's new appearance, a sly smile spreading across his face as he walked around her. "You look different, Ava. But still beautiful. Still mine." Ava's skin crawled at his words, but she kept her cool, knowing she had to play along if she wanted to escape. "Thanks, but how did you find me, Ryder," she asked, forcing a smile. Ryder's gaze lingered on her, his eyes gleaming with desire. "I like the new look. It suits you. And it makes me want to get to know you all over again." Ava's heart raced as Ryder's intentions became clear. "What do you want, Ryder?" she asked, trying to sound nonchalant. Ryder's smile grew wider. "A nightstand, Ava. Just one night, to rekindle what we had. And maybe, just maybe, we can forget about the investment for a while." Ava weighed her options. She knew she had to keep Ryder close, had to make him believe she was still under his control. But could she really go through with it? Could she really spend a night with the man who had ruined her life? Ava hesitated, her mind racing with the implications of Ryder's proposal. She knew she had to play along, but the thought of spending a night with him made her skin crawl. "Okay, Ryder," she said finally, forcing a smile. "One night. But then you have to withdraw your investment." Ryder's eyes widened and gleamed with detest and triumph. "Deal, Ava. But don't think you can outsmart me. I'll be watching you, always." Ava shuddered at the thought, but she knew she had to see this through. She had to make Ryder believe she was still under his control, until she could find a way to escape for good. As Ryder's men closed in around her, Ava knew she was walking a dangerous tightrope. But she was determined to see it through, no matter what it cost her. Ava's heart raced as Ryder led her to his luxurious penthouse apartment. She knew she had to keep up the charade, but her skin crawled at his touch. As they entered the apartment, Ryder poured her a glass of wine, his eyes never leaving hers. "To us, Ava," he said, his voice low and husky. "To our reunion." Ava forced a smile, her mind racing with escape plans. But for now, she had to play along. Ryder smiled at how uneasy she looked. "Feel free Ava, you are not with a stranger" Ava pretended to laugh and smile, all the while secretly searching for a way out. But Ryder's apartment was a fortress, and she was trapped. Just as she thought she couldn't take it anymore, Ryder's phone rang. He answered, his expression darkening. "What do you mean, she's gone?" he growled. Ava's heart skipped a beat. Who was gone? And could this be her chance to escape? Ryder's face turned red with rage as he listened to the caller. "Find her!" he barked, slamming his fist on the table. Ava's heart raced as she realized the distraction she needed had arrived. She slowly got up from the couch, trying not to draw attention to herself. Ryder was too engrossed in his call to notice her slipping away. Ava's eyes scanned the room, searching for an escape route. That's when she saw it - a small door hidden behind a painting. Without hesitation, Ava made a dash for the door. She flung it open and slipped through, finding herself in a dimly lit stairwell. She took a deep breath and started to run, her footsteps echoing off the walls. She knew Ryder's goons would be hot on her heels, but she had a head start. And this time, she was determined to escape for good. Ava's heart pounded as she sprinted. She could hear Ryder's men closing in behind her, their shouts and footsteps getting louder. She burst through the stairwell door and found herself in a crowded nightclub. The music was loud, and the lights were flashing, but Ava knew she had to keep moving. She weaved through the crowd, using her elbows to push through the sea of people. She could feel Ryder's men closing in, their hands grabbing at her clothes. Just when she thought she was going to be caught, Ava saw a glimmer of hope - a side door leading out of the club. She made a beeline for it, pushing through the crowd with all her might. She burst through the door and found herself in a dark alleyway. She could hear Ryder's men shouting behind her, but she knew she had to keep running. Ava sprinted down the alleyway, her feet pounding the pavement. She could see the lights of a taxi cab in the distance, and she knew she had to reach it. With a final burst of energy, Ava reached the taxi and yanked open the door. She dove inside, slamming the door shut behind her. "Drive!" she shouted at the startled driver. "Get me out of here!" The taxi screeched away from the curb, leaving Ryder's men behind. Ava collapsed back in her seat, gasping for breath. She had escaped - for now. But she knew Ryder wo uld never give up. She had to find a way to take him down for good.
