‎Chapter One – The Rescue ‎
‎ ‎ ‎Rain streaked across the dusty windows of the old diner where Elena sat hunched over a chipped coffee cup, the steam long gone cold. The twenty-two-year-old pressed her fingers around it anyway, as if the warmth might seep back into her bones. She hadn’t eaten since yesterday. Her last paycheck from the bookstore barely covered rent, and now even that job was gone, the store had shut down without notice. ‎ ‎She brushed a strand of damp hair from her face, trying to hold her head high. The world already looked at her like a stray. She wouldn’t give it the satisfaction of seeing her break. ‎ ‎“Excuse me, dear… is this seat taken?” ‎ ‎Elena looked up. A woman stood before her, elegant and commanding in a way that turned heads. Her dark coat shimmered faintly from the rain, her silver earrings catching the weak diner light. She was beautiful, poised, and far too refined for this neighborhood. ‎ ‎Elena blinked. “Um… no, ma’am. Please.” ‎ ‎The woman slid gracefully into the booth. “Thank you.” She studied Elena with eyes that were sharp yet kind, as though they could strip away every secret and every sorrow in an instant. “What’s your name?” ‎ ‎“Elena,” she replied carefully. ‎ ‎“Elena,” the woman repeated, tasting the name like it mattered. “I’m Vivian.” ‎ ‎They were silent for a while before Vivian leaned forward and spoke more softly. “You've spent some time sitting here. I couldn't help but notice that. You look… lost. Are you all right?” ‎ ‎Elena stiffened. Pride rose up, her first instinct to shield herself. “I’m fine. Just… waiting.” ‎ ‎“For someone who isn’t coming?” Vivian tilted her head. ‎ ‎The words pierced Elena’s armor. She dropped her gaze. “For something. A chance. A way out.” ‎ ‎Elena started telling Vivian how she struggles ‎ ‎Vivian smiled faintly, as if that was exactly the answer she expected. “Then maybe you’ve just found it.” ‎ ‎Elena’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean?” ‎ ‎Vivian reached across the table, her hand soft and steady. “I have a husband Alexander. He runs a very large business empire, and he’s always in need of capable people. I believe you could be one of them.” ‎ ‎Elena’s heart jolted. “Me? But I.... I don’t have much experience. Not for something like this......not something important.” ‎ ‎Vivian’s eyes warmed. “Experience can be taught. Loyalty, intelligence, and spirit cannot. And I see all of that in you.” ‎ ‎Elena searched her face, wary. “ You don’t even know me.” ‎ ‎Vivian chuckled softly, leaning back. “Because once, I was sitting in a diner just like this, with empty pockets and too much pride to ask for help. Someone gave me a hand. I never forgot it.” Her tone softened, almost motherly. “We are occasionally put in each other's paths for a purpose.” ‎ ‎The lump in Elena’s throat made it hard to speak. “You… you’d really help me?” ‎ ‎“No...no..Not help,” Vivian corrected gently. “provide you with an environment where you can develop, make money, and fit in. Consider it… the beginning of a new chapter.” ‎ ‎Elena experienced hope for the first time in weeks. "I am....... I... I don't know what to say." she muttered, her fingers trembling. With a knowing smile, Vivian said, "Say yes... and believe me. You won't be sorry." Outside, sunlight was breaking through the clouds as the rain started to lessen. And although Elena was not yet aware of it, the path she had just taken would take her into a world of riches, secrets, and a forbidden love that could destroy everything she valued.
