Chapter 1: The Debt that changes everything
Aria Bennett’s feet ached like hell by the time she pushed open the door to their cramped apartment. The clock on the microwave glowed 2:17 a.m. Double shift at the diner, then four hours cleaning offices downtown.
“Ethan?” she called softly yet no answer. He’d better be asleep. The kid needed every hour he could get before school.
She rubbed her eyes, heading straight for the fridge. Leftover spaghetti would have to do but the second she flipped on the kitchen light, her stomach dropped.
Victor sat at the table, face bruised purple and yellow, one eye swollen shut. Blood crusted on his split lip. He looked up at her like a beaten dog.
“Aria…” His voice cracked. “I f****d up.”
She froze, keys still in her hand.
“What the hell happened to you?”
He wouldn’t meet her eyes. His hands shook as he picked at a cigarette burn on the table.
“They found me.”
“Who found you?”
Victor swallowed hard. “The Iron Reapers.”
Aria’s blood ran cold. She’d heard that name around the neighborhood. A motorcycle club that didn’t just break legs. They owned people.
“Five million dollars, Aria.” His voice dropped to a whisper.
“I owe them five million. I thought I could win it back. The cards… they were supposed to turn around this time.”
She stared at him, the spaghetti forgotten.
“Five. Million. Are you out of your goddamn mind?”
“I know, I know!” He reached for her arm but she jerked away.
“Victor, we can barely pay rent. Ethan needs new shoes every three months and you’re out here gambling with people who kill for fun?”
He looked pathetic.
“They’re coming. Tonight. I tried to run but they—”
A loud crash exploded from the front door.
Three massive men in black leather stormed in, boots heavy on the floor. Tattoos crawled up their necks and arms. One of them had a scar running down his cheek. They didn’t even look at Victor first. Their eyes locked straight on her.
Aria’s heart slammed against her ribs. She grabbed the knife from the counter without thinking, holding it out in front of her.
“Get the f**k out of my house!”
The biggest one smirked, not even fazed. “Cute.”
Victor scrambled to his feet, nearly knocking over the chair.
“Please, just give me more time. I’ll get the money, I swear—”
“Shut up,” the scarred man growled. He grabbed Victor by the collar and yanked him toward the door like he weighed nothing.
“Club business now.”
Aria stepped forward, knife still raised. “Don’t touch him. He’s a piece of s**t but he’s still—”
Another biker laughed low.
“Boss wants the girl too.”
The words hit her like a slap. “What?”
The leader of the group tilted his head, studying her.
“You heard me. The President wants to see the girl.”
Aria’s grip tightened on the knife until her knuckles turned white. Her mind raced. Ethan was sleeping in the next room. She couldn’t let them take her. Couldn’t leave her brother alone with this mess.
“I’m not going anywhere with you,” she snapped.
The leader stepped closer. Up close he looked even more dangerous…dark hair, sharp jaw, the kind of man who didn’t need to raise his voice to make people piss themselves.
“You don’t have a choice, sweetheart. Your stepdad made sure of that.” He glanced at Victor, disgust clear on his face.
“Five million is a big debt and he offered you as payment.”
Aria’s stomach twisted. She turned to Victor, betrayal burning hot in her chest. “You did what?”
Victor wouldn’t look at her. He just kept muttering,
“I didn’t know what else to do… they were gonna kill me…”
The scarred biker grabbed Victor’s arm again. “Move.”
Aria lunged forward, but the leader caught her wrist in an iron grip. Not hard enough to bruise, but firm enough that she couldn’t pull away. The knife clattered to the floor.
“Easy,” he said, voice low.
“Fighting won’t help your brother in the other room.”
Her blood turned to ice. So they knew about Ethan.
The leader leaned in just enough for her to hear him clearly.
“Come quiet and nobody gets hurt tonight”
Aria’s mind spun. She thought about screaming. About fighting but three armed bikers stood between her and any chance of getting Ethan out safely. She swallowed hard, forcing her voice steady even though her legs felt like jelly.
“Let me say goodbye to my brother first.”
The leader watched her for a long second, like he was deciding whether she was worth the trouble. Finally he gave a short nod.
“Two minutes. Try anything stupid and we drag you out anyway.”
Aria rushed to Ethan’s room. He was already awake, sitting up in bed with wide, scared eyes. The noise had gotten to him.
“Aria? What’s going on?”
She pulled him into a tight hug, breathing in the familiar smell of his cheap shampoo.
“I have to go somewhere for a little while. Stay here. Lock the door after they leave. Don’t open it for anyone but me, okay?”
His voice shook.
“Are those guys from the club? The ones Victor owes?”
She didn’t want to lie to him.
“Yeah. But I’m gonna fix this. I promise. I’ll come back for you.”
Ethan slipped something into her hand…a thin silver necklace with a small heart pendant. Their mom’s.
“Take this”
Tears burned her eyes but she blinked them back. She kissed the top of his head, then forced herself to walk back out before she broke down.
The bikers were waiting. Victor already looked half-dead as they hauled him toward the door.
The leader gave her a small push between her shoulder blades. “Time’s up. Let’s go.”
Aria glanced back at the apartment one last time, heart heavy. Then she stepped out into the night with them.
Motorcycles rumbled to life in the parking lot. The leader swung onto the biggest bike and jerked his head toward the seat behind him.
“Get on.”
She hesitated, staring at the beast of a machine.
“Now, girl.”
Aria climbed on, wrapping her arms around his waist because she had no other choice. The leather of his cut felt warm under her hands. His body was solid, unyielding.
The bike roared beneath them as they pulled out onto the dark street. Wind whipped her hair back. Behind them, the other bikes followed like shadows.
Aria held on tight, Victor’s words echoing in her head.
*The President wants to see the girl.*
She didn’t know what waited for her at the Iron Reapers’ compound, but one thing was clear..this wasn’t just about money anymore.
Her life had just been sold to the devil.
