24 Alex! He still lay motionless at the far end of the pit. Charlie, too, was in a heap in the center of our cage. “Alex?” I croaked out. My throat was still sore from Lukar’s vice-like grip. “Charlie?” I was thrilled when Charlie stirred, but the hope died when he crawled onto his arms and looked up at me. His face was as pale as death and his eyes showed off a faint red glow. His clenched teeth sported a pair of long fangs. “C. . .Christine,” he whispered. I used the wall as support and struggled to my feet. My heart beat to a fast tune as his red eyes zeroed in on me. “Charlie, don’t move,” I whispered. “W-what’s wrong?” Charlie croaked as he raised himself onto his legs and looked at his pale hands. His eyes widened as he beheld his pale flesh. “Oh gods, no,” he whisper
