The valley echoed with the thunder of charging horses.
General Malachar’s army surged forward like a black tide, their crimson banners snapping in the icy wind. Hundreds of armored soldiers rushed down the hillside, swords raised, while archers took positions among the rocks overlooking the abandoned watchtower.
Liora tightened her grip on the Sword of Asterion.
The silver runes carved into its blade glowed brighter with each passing second.
She could feel the weapon humming in her hands, almost as though it recognized its enemies.
Captain Elara quickly surveyed the battlefield.
“They outnumber us fifty to one.”
Kael stepped beside her.
“Then we don’t stay and fight.”
Elara nodded.
“Our mission is the Crystal Caverns, not this battlefield.”
She pointed toward a narrow mountain path hidden behind the ruins.
“That trail leads directly to Frostpeak.”
“If we can reach it before Malachar surrounds us, we’ll still have a chance.”
General Malachar raised his enormous black sword.
“No one escapes!”
His voice rolled across the valley like distant thunder.
“Archers!”
A rain of black arrows filled the sky.
“Move!” Kael shouted.
The companions sprinted toward the mountain trail.
Arrows struck the ground around them, shattering rocks and sending snow into the air.
Finn stumbled.
Liora immediately grabbed his arm and pulled him forward.
“Keep running!”
Behind them, Captain Elara turned and fired three silver arrows in rapid succession.
Each arrow found its mark, knocking enemy archers from the rocky cliffs.
For a brief moment, the barrage stopped.
“Go!” Elara called.
“We’re losing daylight!”
The trail became steeper with every step.
Snow covered the narrow path, making every foothold uncertain.
Cold winds whipped across the mountainside.
Far below, Malachar’s soldiers continued climbing after them.
“They’re faster than I expected,” Kael muttered.
Liora looked back.
The general himself was climbing the trail with terrifying determination.
His crimson eyes never left her.
⸻
After nearly an hour of climbing, the companions reached a massive cliff of shimmering blue ice.
At its center stood a pair of ancient stone doors nearly thirty feet high.
Each door was covered in glowing symbols identical to those in Eleanor’s journal.
Above them was an inscription.
Captain Elara brushed away centuries of snow.
She slowly translated the ancient words.
“Only the one who carries the voice of hope may enter.”
Liora stepped forward.
“The pendant…”
As soon as the Pendant of Echoes touched the stone, brilliant blue light spread across both doors.
The mountain trembled.
Ice cracked.
A deep rumbling echoed from within.
Slowly…
The enormous doors opened.
Warm air poured out from the darkness beyond.
The companions stared in amazement.
Instead of a frozen cave, they found a magnificent underground world.
Towering crystal pillars stretched from floor to ceiling.
Clear streams flowed beneath glowing bridges of crystal.
Thousands of blue and silver gemstones illuminated the cavern like countless stars.
“It…” Finn whispered.
“…it’s beautiful.”
Captain Elara smiled.
“The Crystal Caverns.”
“No map could ever capture their beauty.”
The group cautiously entered.
The massive stone doors closed behind them with a deep boom.
Outside, General Malachar reached the entrance moments later.
He struck the sealed doors with his sword.
Nothing happened.
“They’re protected.”
One of his officers bowed.
“My lord…”
“What are your orders?”
Malachar smiled coldly.
“They cannot remain inside forever.”
“Surround the mountain.”
“No one enters.”
“No one leaves.”
⸻
Deep within the caverns, the companions followed a winding crystal pathway.
Every surface reflected shimmering light, creating countless mirror images around them.
Liora paused.
“Do you hear that?”
A faint melody drifted through the cavern.
Soft.
Beautiful.
Almost impossible.
Kael looked confused.
“I don’t hear anything.”
Captain Elara shook her head.
“Neither do I.”
Liora followed the music.
The others hurried after her.
The melody led them into an enormous chamber unlike anything they had ever seen.
At its center floated a giant crystal suspended above a pool of perfectly clear water.
Inside the crystal was a glowing blue shard.
The First Echo Crystal.
Its light pulsed gently like the heartbeat of the mountain itself.
Liora stepped closer.
The music grew louder.
Then a voice spoke.
Not aloud.
Inside her mind.
“Welcome… Heir of Echoes.”
Liora froze.
“Who are you?”
“I am Arion.”
“First Guardian of the Crystal.”
A figure slowly emerged from the glowing crystal.
He appeared as an elderly man dressed in silver robes, carrying a staff carved from pure crystal.
His face radiated kindness, yet his eyes held the weight of centuries.
Captain Elara immediately knelt.
“The First Guardian…”
Arion smiled gently.
“You have journeyed far.”
“But no one may claim an Echo Crystal without first proving themselves.”
The chamber suddenly darkened.
The crystal’s glow intensified.
“Every bearer must face the Trial of Truth.”
Before Liora could ask what he meant, the floor disappeared beneath her feet.
She began falling into endless darkness.
Then…
Everything went black.
When she opened her eyes again, she was no longer inside the cavern.
She was standing in Raven Hollow.
Her grandmother stood before her, smiling exactly as she remembered.
“Liora,” Eleanor said softly.
“You’ve finally come home.”
Tears filled Liora’s eyes.
“Grandmother…”
She took a step forward.
But something felt wrong.
The village was too quiet.
The smiles on the villagers’ faces never changed.
The sky never moved.
It was as though time itself had stopped.
Eleanor stretched out her hand.
“You don’t have to continue your journey.”
“You can stay here.”
“You can forget the Shadow King.”
“Forget the prophecy.”
“Forget the pain.”
Liora closed her eyes.
Every part of her wanted to accept.
To remain with the family she had lost.
To return to the peaceful life she once knew.
Then she remembered Kael.
Captain Elara.
Finn.
The Kingdom of Elaris.
She slowly stepped backward.
“No.”
Her grandmother’s smile faded.
“You would leave me again?”
Liora’s voice trembled.
“I love you.”
“But this isn’t real.”
“I have people waiting for me.”
The entire village began to dissolve into light.
Eleanor smiled one last time.
“You have chosen wisely.”
“My brave granddaughter…”
“I always knew you would.”
The illusion shattered.
Liora found herself standing once again before the First Echo Crystal.
Arion smiled proudly.
“You have passed the first trial.”
“But greater trials await.”
The glowing crystal slowly descended toward her.
As Liora reached out, the chamber shook violently.
A deafening explosion echoed through the mountain.
Captain Elara’s face turned pale.
“The entrance…”
Kael looked toward the tunnel.
“They’ve broken through.”
General Malachar had entered the Crystal Caverns.
And this time…
He was not alone.
