The Road to Frostpeak

1091 Words
The first light of dawn filtered through the towering pines of the Whispering Forest, painting the leaves with streaks of gold and emerald. Morning mist drifted lazily above the forest floor, wrapping ancient roots and moss-covered stones in a veil of silver. The battle on the Bridge of Echoes had ended only a few hours earlier. Broken arrows, shattered swords, and fragments of black armor still lay scattered across the weathered stone bridge. The River Vaelor carried away the ashes of the Shadow Hounds, as if trying to erase every trace of the night’s violence. Liora stood quietly at the edge of the bridge. She stared into the rushing water below. Everything had changed. Only three days ago, she had been an ordinary young woman living peacefully in Raven Hollow. Her greatest concerns had been helping her grandmother tend the garden, gathering herbs in the nearby woods, and wondering why she dreamed of voices no one else could hear. Now she had survived a battle. She had witnessed ancient magic. She had learned that an entire kingdom depended on her. The weight of that realization settled heavily on her shoulders. “You didn’t sleep.” Kael’s voice came from behind her. Liora turned. The young ranger carried two steaming cups carved from polished oak. He handed one to her. “It’s only forest tea,” he said with a faint smile. “It won’t solve every problem.” “But it helps.” Liora accepted it gratefully. “Thank you.” For a few moments, they stood in comfortable silence, watching the sunrise spread across the valley. Finally Liora spoke. “Do you ever wish none of this had happened?” Kael smiled sadly. “Every day.” She looked at him in surprise. “When I was younger,” he continued, “I wanted nothing more than a normal life.” “A family.” “A quiet home.” “But fate doesn’t always ask what we want.” “It asks what we’re willing to become.” His words lingered in Liora’s mind. Before she could respond, Captain Elara emerged from the forest carrying a rolled parchment. “We leave immediately.” Kael nodded. “Any news?” Elara spread the map across a flat boulder. “Our enemies know exactly where we’re going.” She pointed north. “The Crystal Caverns beneath Frostpeak Mountain contain the First Echo Crystal.” “But there are three possible routes.” Liora studied the map carefully. “The King’s Road,” Elara explained, tracing the western path with her finger, “is the fastest.” “It’s also the most dangerous.” “The Shadow King’s followers patrol it constantly.” She pointed to the eastern trail. “The Silver Pass is safer, but the journey will take nearly two weeks.” Finally, her finger rested on a narrow line that wound directly through the center of the Whispering Forest. “And this?” Kael’s expression changed. “The Hollow Trail.” Elara nodded. “It hasn’t been used for centuries.” “Why?” “No one who entered it ever returned.” An uneasy silence followed. Then the pendant around Liora’s neck began to glow. Softly at first. Then brighter. A narrow beam of blue light stretched from the crystal and settled directly over the forgotten Hollow Trail. Liora looked at Elara. “I don’t think it’s giving us a choice.” Elara sighed. “I was afraid of that.” ⸻ By midmorning the three companions had gathered their supplies. Kael carried enough dried food for several days, a hunting bow, and two finely crafted swords. Captain Elara packed healing herbs, maps, rope, lanterns, and a weathered book whose leather cover bore the symbol of the Echo Keepers. Liora carried only her satchel, her grandmother’s journal, the silver pendant, and the iron key that had begun everything. Before leaving, Elara knelt beside one of the ancient stone markers near the bridge. She whispered a quiet prayer in the old language of the Keepers. Liora watched respectfully. “Were they your friends?” Elara nodded. “My family.” “Many of them died protecting this bridge.” She stood. “I intend to honor that sacrifice.” The journey north had begun. ⸻ The Hollow Trail quickly swallowed them. Unlike the rest of the forest, this place felt untouched by time. The trees were enormous, their trunks wider than houses. Their branches intertwined high above, blocking almost all sunlight. Strange blue flowers bloomed without soil, growing directly from smooth gray stones. Tiny glowing insects floated lazily through the air like drifting stars. “It doesn’t feel cursed,” Liora whispered. “It feels…” “…alive.” Kael smiled. “It is.” He pointed toward the trees. “The Whispering Forest existed long before the Kingdom of Elaris.” “The oldest legends say the forest remembers everyone who has ever walked beneath its branches.” Liora looked around uneasily. “Remembers?” Before Kael could answer, a child’s laughter echoed somewhere in the distance. Liora stopped walking. “Did you hear that?” Neither Kael nor Elara answered. Instead, they exchanged worried glances. “There shouldn’t be children here,” Elara said quietly. The laughter came again. Closer this time. Light. Joyful. Completely out of place. Liora took a cautious step toward the sound. Then she saw her. A little girl, no older than eight, wearing a white dress and standing among the trees. She smiled warmly at Liora. Then pointed deeper into the forest. Without speaking a single word, the child turned and disappeared into the mist. Liora hurried after her. “Liora!” Kael called. “Wait!” But by the time they reached the clearing, the little girl was gone. Only one thing remained. A small silver flower rested on the ground. Its petals shimmered like moonlight. Captain Elara’s face turned pale. She knelt and carefully picked it up. “This…” “…is a Moon Blossom.” Liora looked at her curiously. “What does it mean?” Elara swallowed. “It only blooms where the boundary between the living and the dead grows thin.” Kael instinctively reached for his sword. Then, from somewhere deep within the forest, a low horn echoed. Once. Twice. Three times. Elara’s eyes widened. “They’ve found us.” “The Umbral Order is closer than I feared.” And hidden beyond the mist, dozens of crimson eyes slowly opened. The hunt had begun again.
