The Forest That Remembered

979 Words
Darkness settled over the Hollow Trail as though the forest itself had drawn a curtain across the sky. The faint light of the moon struggled to reach the ground through the thick canopy overhead. Twisted branches stretched across the path like the fingers of ancient giants, while the soft glow of blue mushrooms illuminated patches of moss-covered earth. Liora, Kael, and Captain Elara stood motionless. The horn had sounded three times. Somewhere beyond the mist, dozens of crimson eyes watched them. “They’re here,” Kael whispered, unsheathing his sword. Captain Elara nodded. “Not just the Umbral Order.” She looked toward the darkness beyond the trees. “The forest has awakened.” Liora tightened her grip on the spear she had recovered from the Bridge of Echoes. “I don’t understand.” Elara spoke quietly. “The Whispering Forest is alive.” “It watches.” “It remembers.” “And sometimes…” “It chooses.” A sudden rustling echoed through the trees. Something moved between the shadows. Then another. Then another. Within moments, dark figures surrounded the clearing. They were unlike the Shadow Hounds. These creatures stood on two legs, nearly seven feet tall, with bark-like skin, glowing amber eyes, and antlers that reached toward the branches above. Liora gasped. “What are they?” Kael lowered his sword. “Forest Guardians.” Captain Elara slowly removed her hood. She placed one hand over her heart. The towering beings watched silently. One stepped forward. Unlike the others, its antlers were crowned with glowing white blossoms. It carried an ancient wooden staff carved with symbols older than the Kingdom of Elaris itself. The guardian looked directly at Liora. For several long moments, neither moved. Then the guardian gently struck its staff against the ground. The earth trembled. Roots burst from the soil. They twisted together, forming the shape of a doorway. Inside the doorway shimmered a vision. Liora saw Raven Hollow. Her grandmother, Eleanor, stood in the garden, smiling as she planted white lilies beneath the morning sun. Little Liora—only six years old—ran toward her, laughing. The memory felt so real that tears filled Liora’s eyes. “My grandmother…” Captain Elara smiled softly. “The forest is showing you what it remembers.” The guardian raised one massive hand. The vision changed. Now Liora saw Queen Seraphina standing before the Mirror of Echoes. But this time, something was different. She wasn’t alone. Beside the queen stood a young knight wearing silver armor marked with the symbol of the Echo Keepers. Around his neck hung a pendant identical to Liora’s. Liora frowned. “Who is he?” Elara stared at the vision in disbelief. “I’ve seen his portrait.” “He was Sir Alaric.” “The first Commander of the Echo Keepers.” The image faded. The guardian spoke—not with words, but directly into their minds. The blood of the first guardian still walks the earth. Liora felt her heart skip. “The blood…” Elara slowly turned toward her. “Liora…” “I think the guardian is talking about you.” Before Liora could respond, a scream echoed through the forest. It came from somewhere beyond the trees. Kael immediately recognized it. “Someone’s in trouble.” Another scream followed. This one closer. Without hesitation, Kael sprinted toward the sound. “Liora, stay with Elara!” The two women followed as quickly as they could. They burst into another clearing. A young boy, no older than twelve, clung desperately to the branch of a fallen tree while three Shadow Hounds circled below. The creatures snarled, waiting for him to fall. “Help!” the boy cried. Kael didn’t hesitate. He charged forward, driving his sword into the nearest hound. The beast dissolved into black smoke. Captain Elara fired two silver arrows. Both found their marks. The remaining creatures vanished into ash. Kael helped the frightened boy climb down. “Are you hurt?” The boy shook his head. “My name is Finn.” “I got separated from my family.” Captain Elara frowned. “There are no villages anywhere near here.” Finn lowered his eyes. “We’ve been hiding.” “From the Umbral Order.” Liora knelt beside him. “Why are they hunting you?” Finn slowly reached beneath his shirt. Around his neck hung a small silver pendant. Its design matched Liora’s—though smaller. Elara inhaled sharply. “Another Echo Pendant…” Finn looked frightened. “My mother told me never to show it.” “But she said if I ever met the girl chosen by the forest…” “…I should give her this.” He removed the pendant. The moment it touched Liora’s hand, both pendants glowed. A beam of blue light shot high into the night sky. Far away… Inside the throne room of Castle Noctis… The Shadow King slowly stood. His crimson eyes narrowed. “So…” “The Heir of Echoes has found another key.” He smiled. “Prepare the Black Legion.” “No more waiting.” “If she seeks the First Crystal…” “We shall greet her at Frostpeak.” Back in the forest, the light faded. Captain Elara looked toward the northern mountains. “The Shadow King knows where we’re going.” Kael tightened the strap of his pack. “Then we’ll reach Frostpeak before his army does.” Liora looked at the pendant in her hand. For the first time, she understood the true weight of her journey. She wasn’t just searching for the Echo Crystals. She was uncovering the forgotten history of her own family. And every answer she found brought her one step closer to a destiny that could either save Elaris… …or destroy it forever. The journey to Frostpeak had truly begun.
