LUNA'S RETURN (The Awakening)
Chapter One The courtroom was packed, though it was only a moot trial. Law students filled every available seat, leaning forward in anticipation, pens scratching notes on paper, eyes flicking between their peers and the bench. The air was heavy with the scent of polished wood, ink, and a faint trace of anxiety that seemed to hover like a living thing. Amara adjusted her wig, tugging it just slightly to settle it into place, her fingers trembling barely perceptibly. She rose to her feet, clutching her notes tightly as if they were a lifeline. This was it. One more chance to prove herself, one more moment to show she deserved the Bench. The familiar thrill of challenge coiled in her stomach like a snake, a mix of excitement and fear. Her gaze swept the courtroom, taking in the rows of students, the solemn judges, the faintly impatient sighs from the gallery. Then she focused on the desk before her and drew a slow, steadying breath. “My Lords, the law is not a weapon to oppress but a shield to protect. And today, justice demands that this shield be raised!” Her voice carried, crisp and unwavering. The room fell silent, as if her words had struck a chord in the very walls themselves. Even her rival, James, paused mid-shuffle with his papers, eyes narrowing as though he could feel the electricity in the air. For a fleeting moment, Amara felt unstoppable, a surge of power lifting her higher than her own fears. It was as though the courtroom bent to her will, the murmurs fading, leaving only the sound of her heartbeat—steady, strong, alive. Then it came. A whisper, softer than the rustle of paper, slid into her mind. She froze, mid-step, a chill crawling up her spine. “Your pack needs you, Luna…” Her grip on the paper faltered. She scanned the room; no one had spoken. The judges’ eyes bore into her, patient yet expectant, waiting for her to continue. She forced a smile, but her chest felt tight, as though iron bands had coiled around it. Her heart raced, hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Get a hold of yourself, she thought fiercely. But the whisper returned, firmer this time, insistent. “Do not fail us please.” The words struck something deep inside her, a place she didn’t know existed, buried beneath years of discipline and careful control. Pain flared in her skull, sharp, hot, almost blinding. She gasped, her knees threatening to buckle beneath her. A voice cut through the tense silence, sharp and skeptical. “Objection, my Lords. Counsel seems… unwell.” Snickers rippled through the gallery. Amara’s cheeks burned, but she swallowed hard, lifting her head with trembling determination. Then she noticed it—the lights, glaring, reflecting not just off the polished wood, but somehow from her own eyes. A murmur ran through the hall, low at first and then swelling: “Her eyes… are they glowing?” Panic clawed at her chest. Her hands shook as she staggered back toward the desk, clutching it for support. Something alive, primal, untamed, stirred deep within her chest. It was raw, hungry, thrumming with power she had never dared to acknowledge. Chioma leaned forward from the gallery, eyes wide with shock. “What’s wrong?” she whispered, her voice trembling. Amara’s notes slipped through her fingers, scattering across the polished floor. From deep in her throat came a low growl—not her own, not fully human, resonant and wild. It vibrated through the air, rattling the wood, crawling under the benches, snaking around the onlookers’ ankles. The gallery erupted in gasps, whispers, and murmurs. The judges slammed their gavels down, banged their tables, shouting for order, but Amara didn’t hear them. All she heard was the voice in her head, rising, insistent, commanding: “Awaken, Luna. Awaken.” The gold flared in her vision, spreading outward like molten fire. Her heart roared with power she hadn’t realized she possessed. A warmth surged through her body, coiling around her limbs and spine, her senses sharpening until every sound, every breath, every heartbeat in the courtroom felt magnified. And then her eyes turned gold. In that moment, the courtroom no longer felt ordinary. It was a stage for something far larger than a moot trial. Something ancient had awoken. Amara inhaled deeply, steadying herself for the first time, not as a student, not as a girl but as Luna.
