After a C-section, I suffered severe postpartum hemorrhage, leaving my body completely depleted. My family spent heavily on hiring a professional nutritionist to prepare a customized postpartum confinement meal plan for me.

However, my husband, Jack, instructed the nutritionist to split my meal plan in half and give one portion to his secretary.

Then he turned to me and said, "Chloe has been working hard on the project. Give her half of it to help her recover. Consider it a company benefit. It's just shared resources. Don't be so stingy. Be more considerate."

Before I could respond, Chloe smiled and said, "Sis, aren't you afraid you'll get too fat to ever get your figure back? Half is just right for me."

I clenched my fists and looked up at Jack. "Are you sure you want to do this?"

He met Chloe's expectant gaze and nodded without hesitation. "Of course. It's just a small matter. Don't make a fuss. Be sensible.

"As a reward for giving birth, you've already contributed enough. You can keep the remaining half."

I had been cut open layer by layer during the C-section, seven layers deep, and had nearly died.

Yet what I received in return was a so-called "shared" postpartum confinement meal plan.

Chapter 1
I used every ounce of strength I had left to suppress my rage and pointed at the door. "Get out." Chloe's eyes immediately turned red as she looked at Jack with grievance. Jack frowned. "Emily, have you had enough of this? Chloe has stayed up for several nights in a row working on the project. I'm just rewarding her a little. What's wrong with that? Can't you be more generous?" As my emotions surged, the surgical wound in my abdomen throbbed painfully. My voice trembled. "Your idea of generosity is taking the postpartum confinement meals that are keeping me alive and giving them to your secretary?" He looked at my pale face, and a trace of hesitation flashed across his expression. But when his peripheral vision landed on Chloe's tearful face, he continued anyway, "What do you mean, 'fought for your life'? Who doesn't give birth? Are you the only delicate one? It's just a bowl of soup. Is it worth ruining workplace harmony over this?" Workplace harmony? I almost laughed out loud in anger. Chloe stood up with teary eyes. "Mr. Jack, forget it. It's my fault. I shouldn't have come. Emily just gave birth, she's emotionally unstable, I understand. I'll go. I won't affect your marriage." She put down the food container and wiped her tears as she walked out. Jack chased after her, constantly comforting her. "Chloe, don't take it to heart. She's just like that..." The hospital room was left with only me and that half portion of the cold postpartum confinement meal. I closed my eyes, and tears silently slid down my face. Less than half an hour later, Jack returned with a dark expression and threw his coat onto the sofa. "Emily, what exactly do you want? Do you really have to make everyone lose face? Chloe cried all the way back. How is the project supposed to move forward now?" His accusatory tone made my chest hurt more than my wound. "What do I want? You should be asking yourself what you want! That was my postpartum meal! What right do you have to give it to an outsider?" He sneered and waved it off. "Fine, I'm not arguing with you. I came back to inform you that the company is planning a 'New Life' themed family day next quarter. "Get ready. Bring the baby to the company, so everyone can share the joy. It'll also boost morale for Chloe and the team. Then this matter is considered over." I answered coldly, "We're not going. The baby is too young to handle it." 'How ridiculous.' Was my child, not even seventy-two hours old, supposed to become a prop for him to please his secretary? Jack's expression darkened. "Emily, don't be so selfish. Can you think of me for once? I work this hard for whom? For this family! As my wife, you should support me unconditionally!" I shot back, "Taking a newborn into a germ-filled office. How exactly is that thinking of us?" Before the argument could escalate further, my mother walked in carrying a thermos and immediately noticed my red-rimmed eyes. "What happened, Emily? Who bullied you?" Jack saw her and his tone turned hostile. "Mom, please judge fairly. I just want to bring the baby to the company for morale. Emily refuses and says I don't consider her or the child." My mother exploded instantly. "Jack! Have you lost your mind? The baby is only a few days old, and you want to use my granddaughter as a prop? Do you have no conscience?" "Mom! I'm doing this for work! For this family! Emily is being unreasonable. Why are you siding with her?" Feeling outnumbered, he called his mother and put the phone on speaker. The moment it connected, his mother's sarcastic voice came through. "Son, what is it? Is that spoiled woman giving you trouble again?" Jack immediately began complaining. After hearing everything, his mother backed him without hesitation. "What's so special about giving birth? Back in our day, we were working the next day! She's just too pampered! "Bringing the baby to the company is giving you face! Emily, don't be ungrateful! My son is outstanding. Marrying you is a blessing from eight lifetimes!" My mother trembled with anger. She pointed at Jack. "You... is this how you talk about my daughter?" Jack avoided her finger and said arrogantly, "Mom, I'm just stating facts. Emily is too delicate. She needs discipline." His mother continued on the phone, "Exactly! She needs discipline! Emily, if you still want to be part of the Miller family, behave yourself! Stop causing trouble for my son!" Jack turned to me and ordered, "Emily, for your behavior, you will apologize to my mother right now!" My mother rushed forward, trying to push his hand away, her voice trembling. "Jack! You've gone too far!" Annoyed, Jack shoved her aside. My mother staggered, hit the bedside cabinet, and collapsed to the floor without a sound. "Mom!" I cried out and tried to get up, but the wound tore painfully, making me suck in a sharp breath. At that moment, his phone rang. He answered immediately, panic in his voice. "What? Chloe fainted? Which hospital? Alright, I'm coming now!" From beginning to end, Jack didn't even look at my mother lying on the floor. He hung up and walked out of the hospital room without looking back.
