Chapter 14: Sexist rules

It had been a week since Matt had given Lilly her first lesson and a month exactly since Lilly had started working at the restaurant.

Over the past week, Lilly and Matt had grown practically as inseparable as Lilly and Abby and all three of them hung out together every night after work.  Although Lilly had now told Abby her secret about her family and she too had vowed to protect Lilly from Jason, Abby still didn't know Matt's secret and despite both Matt and Lilly telling Abby numerous times they weren't dating nor ' friends with benefits' Abby still didn't believe them and just thought they were wanting to keep their relationship quiet for a while and she respected them both enough not to push them into confirming it officially until they were ready and so stuck to only a little light teasing.

 Lilly and Matt continued to sigh at Abby's light teasing but they knew she was respecting them by not pushing the subject so they laughed off the teasing, Matt had confided in Lilly that he wanted to tell Abby however but he needed a little more time to build up the courage to do so. He trusted Abby and although he knew being gay was nothing to be ashamed of and in many ways, it was largely normalized in society now and he was privileged to live in the UK and not a country were people of the l***q ( Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer or Questioning ) community was largely discriminated against or their safety and life's were in danger as many of the community life's were in other countries, but to him telling his family and friends felt like a huge deal personally and he just wasn't ready.

It was Friday night and the trio were all hanging out in Matt's stylish apartment after a long twelve-hour shift, " Ergh I can't believe the pervert is back tomorrow... I wish he never came back from holiday." Abby sighed as she passed Lilly the popcorn.

" Is he really that bad? " Lilly asked nervously.

" The skimpy uniforms should give you that answer along with the sexist dress code," Matt replied angrily.

" The dress code? " Lilly asked confused.

" It's stuck to the back of the female locker room door and displayed on the wall next to the mirror... have you read it? "  Abby asked taking back the popcorn and shoving more than should be possible into her mouth.

" No, I haven't heard of it before now," Lilly said slightly nervous for tomorrow now.

" Oh sorry Marcel leaves it to the waitresses to tell the new girls but since the pervs been gone the girls have been enjoying a break from it and Marcel is always kind enough to turn a blind eye to our little break whenever Tommy is out of town, sorry we totally forgot to tell you about it. I don't have a written copy but all the girls and even the guys at work know it off by heart... since the girls hate it so much and we moan about it to the guys all the time." Abby said turning to apologize to Lilly.

" Yeah it's true .. and they moan a hell of a lot .. " Matt said teasingly.

" HEY! You better be careful what you say Matt since your ' not my girlfriend secret girlfriend ' will soon be one of those moaners and with all the moves you've been teaching her she may decide to kick your ass if you get too cheeky! " Abby joked nudging Matt playfully and winking at Lilly.

" Again ... she's not my girlfriend but you're right that she could definitely kick my ass as she's a quick learner and has mastered the self defence moves I taught her already. Next week we are learning Martial arts once you decide which one you want to learn Lilly and you should join us, Abbey. " Matt replied after he jokingly rolled his eyes.

" Thanks for the offer Matt but I am fine with just the basic defence lessons you taught me last year... Martial arts lessons aren't for me as I don't like getting sweaty with a hot guy unless it's for other reasons and since you're taken already I will look elsewhere for that ." Abby giggled as she winked at Lilly.

" He's not taken as far as I know Abby and I understand but if you change your mind the offers there. Anyway, can you tell me the dress code policies, please? I don't want to stand out from the other girls and  give Mr. Sinclair a reason to notice me ." Lilly asked trying to find a pen and paper in her bag to take notes.

" You always stand out in a crowd Lilly as your like supermodel hot but I know what you mean, okay ready there's a lot of the sexist pig's stupid rules," Abby asked in a disgusted tone and Lilly nodded whilst holding her pen and notepad in her hand.

" Okay so rule one always wear the uniform provided no substitutes, in my opinion, that rule is so girls don't buy skirts that are actually a respectable length or shirts that aren't clingy and see-through. Rule two waitresses must wear red lipstick and have lashes either naturally dark and defined or coated with black mascara - that rule is definitely there so he can have perverted fantasy's about the waitress mainly about our lips no doubt. " Abby declared in a repulsed tone making Matt laugh but Lilly look confused as she was too innocent to understand the reference to oral s*x.

" Where was i .. Rule three waitresses must be bared legged or wear clear tights and groomed appropriately- in other words shave your legs and have them exposed so the pervert can ogle them. Rule four waitresses must be clean and presentable at all times and wear perfume- he likes that rule for when he invades the waitress's personal space, which is often. Rule five waitresses must wear black heels when at work - again to full-fill his fantasies and finally rule six waitresses must wear their name tags on the left breast - left or right it doesn't matter he just uses it as an excuse to stare at your breasts my pretending he's reading it ." 

Lilly had finished writing the list and reread it in her head, " Wow he really does sound like a pervert... I can't believe he gets away with those rules. " Lilly said shocked.

" Yeah I know but it's not like you need a degree to waitress and since it's a high-class restaurant and located in the posh part of London a lot of the customers are rich and leave great tips so I and the rest of the waitresses put up with them to continue to work there or he will replace us in a heartbeat," Abby explained.

Lilly nodded her understanding " Thank you for telling me, I am a bit worried though as I don't own red lipstick or any makeup actually or heels either ." 

" I think you should be okay with the makeup actually as you have surprisingly dark lashes for someone with such fair hair and your lips are naturally really red but I will bring you in a few pairs of heels to choose from tomorrow, size 5 right? " Abby asked kindly.

" Thank you Abby I appreciated it and yes please if it's not to much trouble ." 

" No trouble at all Lilly you're like my sister and sisters are meant to borrow each other's clothes all the time .. speaking off I have a dress that will look perfect on you I will bring that in too," Abby said as she looked at her phone to read the time.  " Oh geez, I better go my bus is in like 15 minutes," Abby said as she sprung from the couch and started packing her stuff.

" I can drive you home if you want? " Matt offered

" That's kind of you Matt but I will take the bus and leave you to love birds alone, you better enjoy your time together since now Tommy's back you two better keep your distance at work as it's totally obvious you're dating and you know Tommy gets jealous and likes to think all the girls are single and available," Abby said and Lilly was shocked to realize she was being serious... surly that was really inappropriate for a boss? 

" Again we are just friends but we are close and I can see how our innocent relationship might be mistaken and you're right he has no right to be but Tommy is jealous .. he fired Louise after he found out she asked Phil out. " Matt said agreeing with Abby and warning Lilly.

" Wow that's surely illegal, how can he get away with that? " Lilly asked naive and innocent still when it came to s****l harassment. 

" That's the way the world works Lil, there's s****l harassment everywhere sickeningly and it mainly comes from men in a position of power who target women who are a  lower rank than them or in desperate situations. " Matt explained.

Lilly shook her head stunned that such things were so common. She could never have imagined such situations existed,  that a man can take such liberties with a  woman and get away with it and she hoped she was never in such a desperate situation that she was trapped and forced to give in to their abuse... the thought made her shudder.

" Don't worry Lilly we all look out for each other when Tommy is around and the most that he will get away with is a few comments and a creepy stare," Abby said seeing Lilly shudder and trying to reassure her.         "Anyway I really need to go but I will bring the shoes in tomorrow... bye love birds !! " Abby shouted as she checked her phone and ran out the door sprinting for her bus.

" It will be fine Lil she's right, everyone watches out for the girls and I promised you once no one will hurt you again and I intend to keep that promise," Matt said as he stood up and pulled her off the couch with him and into a tight embrace. " Right come on it's late I better take you home, is Marcel still giving you a lift in or do you want me to pick you up? " 

" Yeah I didn't realize the time we best get going and Marcel is but thank you," Lilly said standing on her tiptoes and giving him a chaste kiss on the cheek in a sisterly gesture before they both headed downstairs and Matt drove her home.
