Emma
The moon was bright in the black night. There were no stars in the inky sky and the atmosphere had something lingering in the air. I had a shawl wrapped around my slender shoulders and I was looking out at the moon standing in my balcony. Our house was situated in the outskirts of the city. We could see the forest right from our balcony. The huge canopies of the trees covered the forest and there was an eeriness to the forest. I looked at the forest and had to squint my eyes to look past the trees. The wind blew my hair as I tried to look beyond the darkness that has surrounded the forest. My pale skin became cold and I griped my shawl a little tighter to my body. I think I saw a rush of movement, a rush of black movement. It passed away in a blink of an eye leaving me in a confused state.
What was that in the forest?
I rushed inside in fear and shut my balcony glass doors with shaky hands. Are they coming to get me? Have they found me? I shut my eyes tightly and tapped my temples to get rid of my dark thoughts.
Will I have to live with this fear for the rest of my life? The fear of them pouncing through the forest and snatching me away from my mother?
A knock on my door caused me to jump up in fright.
‘’Honey, I brought you soup.’’ I relaxed at the sound of my mother. It was her.
‘’Mom, come inside. I’ll have the soup later, just sit down with me for a while.’’ I pleaded.
I scooted away so she could sit with me on the bed. Mom placed the soup on my bedside table and sat next to me. ‘’How are you feeling now sweetheart?’’ mom always asks me this question.
I shut my eyes and sat closer to her. ‘’I wish dad was here with us. We wouldn’t have to worry for a lot of things if he was here with us.’’ I whispered in a soft voice with eyes still closed. I feared that if I opened my eyes and looked at my mom I would start sobbing and the memories will haunt me like every single night.
Mom remained silent for a while. I could hear her soft sigh, ‘’I wish he was here too but he is in a better place now don’t you think?’’ I heard the pause in her voice, the pause which hid all the sorrow and all the weight of this world. I opened my eyes and hugged my mom as tears rolled down my cheeks in a never ending stream.
