Chapter Seven
Another pulse of power surged beneath her skin suddenly and then the growl inside her chest deepened.
Fight. it said.
“No,” Rumi gasped. She didn’t want to hurt anyone again, but the thing inside her didn’t seem to care what she wanted.
A wolf burst from the trees ahead of her suddenly, Rumi cried out and stumbled backward.
Huge, black-furred, golden eyes locked onto hers.
Another wolf appeared to her left.
Then another. They surrounded her quickly.
Pack warriors.
Rumi’s chest heaved violently as she spun in circles searching for escape but there wasn’t one.
One of the wolves shifted smoothly into human form and she recognized him as Beta Tristan, Alpha Rolan’s second-in-command and Madeline’s cousin.
His expression was grim as he looked at her.
“Rumi,” he said carefully. “Come with us.”
Her breathing became ragged. “No.”
“You’re unstable,” Tristan continued. “The Alpha needs answers.”
The mention of Rolan sparked sudden anger inside her; sharp and intense. The power beneath her skin reacted instantly. The air around her changed and the wolves growled uneasily.
Tristan’s expression darkened slightly.
“what are you doing?.”
“I don’t know,” Rumi whispered. And that was the terrifying truth.
The crimson glow flickered faintly in her eyes again. The wolves immediately tensed.
One whimpered softly and Rumi realized they were afraid of her.
Rumi staggered backward. “I don’t want to hurt anyone,” she said shakily.
“Then stop resisting and let us help you.” somehow that only made things worse.
Tristan stepped toward her carefully.
The power inside her snarled instantly.
Mine.
The possessive fury in that voice shocked her. It hated them, all of them.
Rumi clutched her head painfully. “Stop…”
The power surged harder. The ground beneath her feet cracked suddenly and every wolf froze.
Tristan’s eyes widened. “What are you?”
Rumi wished she knew.
A loud crack suddenly ripped through the forest nearby.
Everyone froze. Tristan and his men shifted instantly into defensive positions.
Rumi’s pulse quickened, even the creature inside her went silent suddenly. Watching.
Then a fleet of arrows flew out of the darkness and struck the ground few feet away from tristan and his men.
“the next one goes through your heart.” a voice said.
They waited with bated breath until a few seconds later a man emerged from the shadows.
Tall, broad shouldered and dressed entirlely in black but what caught her attention was the peculiar color of his eyes; they were a bright grey, almost silver. Two more joined him, a male and a female with crossbows aimed at tristan and his men.
those silver eyes landed directly on Rumi and for the first time since her awakening, the monster inside her reacted with something other than rage.
Recognition.
Tristan stepped forward instantly, placing himself between the stranger and his men.
“who are you?” he demanded.
The stranger ignored him, his gaze never leaving rumi.
Rumi’s pulse quickened, the creature in her whimpered.
“leave and we won’t hurt you.” the stranger said.
“you leave and I’ll spare your life. You're trespassing on Black moon territory.”
“i know exactly whose territory this is.”
Something dangerous flickered beneath those words.
Growls deepened around the clearing.
The stranger looked unimpressed.
“If you value your lives,” he said softly, “you’ll walk away now.”
One of the younger hard headed wolves snarled and lunged without warning.
“Wait!” Tristan barked.
Too late. The stranger moved at the same time, so fast that Rumi barely saw it happen.
