Chapter Fourteen
Stray. Is that what they call her around here?
After those words came out of Mira’s mouth Rumi took off. There was simply no reason for her to stay and listen to anymore of her attempts at veiled insults.
Rumi knew Mira disliked her from the moment they first met only she didn’t realize just how much. She thought she finally found a place where she belonged, had already begun to feel comfortable but she was an outcast amongst outcasts.
“i’m so sorry about Mira.” Lyra said as soon as Rumi opened the door. “that was very mean of her.”
“it’s okay, you don’t have to apologize on her behalf. I get that my coming here would raise a lot of eyebrows considering I’m not like most omegas.”
“they’ll get used to it.” for a rogue, Lyra was surprisingly cheery. “Mira on the other hand is just being impossible because she’d jealous.”
“jealous?”
“oh please don’t tell me you haven’t noticed. Anyone with eyes could see that she’s got the hots for Kael. She spent years trying to get Kael’s attention but the you show up and in just a few days he’s all over you.”
Rumi scoffed. “he’s not all over me.”
“yeah right keep telling yourself that.”
Well Mira had accused him of neglecting his duties to spend time with her, and then there was the incident earlier today… Rumi felt her face grow warm at the thought.
How was it possible to be attracted to someone that’s not your mate especially after you get brutally rejected by said mate?
***
Rumi decided she hated mornings, specifically Kael mornings.
“move!” he ordered.
“i am moving.”
“even a house cat moves faster than this.”
Rumi glared at him through loose strands of hair sticking to her sweaty face.
The sun had barely risen over the mountain, and Kael had already spent the last hour tormenting her across the training field like some emotionally constipated war general. Her arms burned, her legs hurt and she was fairly certain she’d discovered muscles she never wanted to mett.
“i survived rejection, exile, hunters and silver bullets,” she snapped breathlessly. “yet somehow this is the worst experience of my life.”
Kael looked unimpressed.
“you complain constantly.”
“you enjoy my suffering constantly.”
“your footing is wrong.”
Rumi made an offended sound then immediately lost her balance again. Kael caught her wrist before she hit the ground. Warmth flashed sharply beneath her skin.
There it was again, that feeling…
Her breath caught. Kael’s hand tightened instinctively around her.
And then just like before he let go of her abruptly like touching her burned. Rumi didn’t understand why that bothered so much.
“you keep doing that.” she muttered.
“doing what?”
Oh so now he wants to feign ignorance?
“you act weird every time you touch me.”
“there’s nothing weird about keeping you from kissing the ground.”
“you two have the emotional tension of divorced parents.” Lyra said.
Training continued without a hitch for the next few days and even though Rumi thought he was a slave driver she actually admired his dedication. He was patient with her much to Mira’s dismay.
There were a few of those little moments but none of them want to acknowledge it. The better Rumi got at combat the more intense the fire under her skin got, she tried so much to ignore the strange warmth spreading through her chest. She got faster, stronger and sharper.
“i’m dead.” Rumi said collapsing onto the grass dramatically.
“you’re still breathing.” Kael told her.
“unfortunately.”
Kael stood above her holding two water bottles not even winded it was so unfair. Rumi accepted one of the bottles and took almost downed the entire bottle.
“do you ever get tired?”
“not from this.” Kael’s mouth twitched at the corner.
“is that a mocking smile I see there?” Rumi pointed accusingly at him.
“it was indigestion.”
“liar.” she retorted.
That’s when he threw back his head and laughed, the first time he actually did since she arrived at Black Hollow.
The sound stunned her and moon goddess it changed his entire face.
The hard edges softened instantly, the constant guardedness disappeared for one rare moment and made him look warmer.
Her stomach flipped stupidly. Kael sat beside her on the grass, close enough that their shoulders almost touched. Rumi became painfully aware of their proximity especially when his arm brushed hers accidentally.
Kael went still beside her. His silver eyes shifted toward her slowly just as Rumi looked up at the exact same moment.
The world suddenly felt too quiet as something invisible stretched tightly between them.
Rumi’s pulse quickened. Kael’s gaze dropped briefly to her mouth and her breath caught in her throat.
Just as her eyes closed in anticipation for what was coming footsteps ruined the moment. Kael leaned back instantly and Rumi hated how disappointed she felt.
Mira appeared with a brown paper bag.
“you missed breakfast.” she said. “so I thought I’d whip up something…”
“thanks.” Kael said as he took the bag.
Mira looked between the two and when she met Rumi’s gaze the displeasure on her face was stark but changed drastically when she looked at Kael then she frowned, “you reopened your shoulder wound.”
Rumi frowned instantly. “you’re injured?”
Kael looked mildly annoyed. “it’s nothing.”
Mira looked even more annoyed. “he says that after getting stabbed.
“you got stabbed?”
Kael glared at Mira now. “you might as well announce it to the entire mountain.”
Mira shrugged much to his chagrin.
Rumi stared at him. “when did this happen?”
“the other day, hunter attack.”
“how come I didn’t know this?”
“nobody in camp knows except patrol.” Mira supplied and almost sounded smug about it.
“shouldn’t you already heal by now?” werewolves have incredible healing abilities it’s weird that he hasn’t healed himself all this time.
“it’s the curse.” Mira blurted out, it was too late when she realised.
“Mira.” Kael warned sternly.
“what curse?” Rumi asked.
“why don’t we call it a day?” Kael said dismissingly.
“but…” Rumi started to say but Kael was already walking away.
