Chapter Thirteen
Rumi didn’t see kael for the rest of the day. She might just be reading too much into it, but rumi had this sinking feeling that he was avoiding her.
Rumi took the snacks lyra brought and they both ate and chatted together.
“how long have you been at Black Hollow?” rumi asked.
“five years.”
“that’s an awfully long time.”
“it’s not all that bad, time goes by really fast that you barely notice. Besides, I love it here. I’d rather be here than my old Pack, I went rogue because they were so mean. I wanted nothing to do with another pack after that but Kael convinced me to stay at black hollow now I’m glad I did.”
“has kael been here long?”
“he’s one of the founders of black hollow what do you mean?”
“oh. My bad.” rumi let out an awkward chuckle. “do you know where he’s from? I mean what’s the deal about his eyes?” it’s the first thing anyone would notice about him and rumi thought they were unique.
“you didn’t hear this from me but I heard talks about a curse.”
Rumi was taken aback. “what kind of curse?”
Before lyra could answer, the snapping of a dried branch stole their attention.
A lanky boy with a mop of auburn hair came into view. He was wearing a pair of dark shades which rumi found weird.
“hey lyra.”
“hi finn.”
“this the new girl everyone’s talking about?”
“rumi this is finn, Finn, rumi. Don’t let his blindness fool you.” she said to rumi. “he can probably see more than half of us around here, plus he’s the fastest wolf here.”
That’s impressive. Rumi thought.
“nice to meet you finn.”
“likewise.”
“we were just about to head back to camp.” lyra said.

“Is that Mira?” Lyra said as they reached the last clearing at the entrance of the camp.
“Where?”
“There.” Rumi followed where Lyra was pointing at and saw not just Mira but Kael as well but he had his back turned. Mira had several folded clothes on one arm.
“you’ve skipped patrol rotations twice this week.”
Rumi heard Mira say as they got withing earshot.
Kael’s jaw tightened slightly.
“i reassigned them.”
“you never reassign your own shifts.”
“i’ve been busy.”
“yeah, I can see that. You’re too busy in fact no one ever sees you around anymore because you’re always with that omega.” she said the word with so much disgust Rumi almost flinched.
“she’s new cut her some slack.” Kael replied simply.
“and?” Mira arched a delicate brow. “you’re treating her like she’s made of glass.”
“i’m just trying to be kind after what she’s been through.”
“everyone in this camp has been through one hell or the other, what makes her so special?”
Lyra stared at Rumi as if to make sure she was okay.
Rumi realized that her presence was becoming a problem. Kael took the folded clothes from Mira calmly and said, “I’ll handle tonight’s patrol.”
“that’s what you said two days ago.”
“except I did handle it.”
“yeah after midnight.”
Rumi looked away awkwardly. This suddenly felt like a conversation she shouldn’t be hearing.
Mira glanced up then and their eyes met. She seemed to have noticed Rumi’s discomfort because she smirked and something unreadable flashed across her face before she looked back at Kael.
“you c
an’t protect every stray that wonders into camp.”
