Samantha “Sam” Carter woke up drenched in sweat, her heart hammering as if it wanted to escape her chest. For a moment, she didn’t recognize where she was. Then she realized she wasn’t in her bedroom. She was lying on cold marble floors, in the middle of a massive hall. Tall arched windows let in the pale morning light, and banners with the emblem of Princeton University hung from the walls. Her mind went blank. She tried to remember how she got here… but there was nothing. The last eight months of her life were gone, erased like someone had taken a giant eraser to her memory. Sam pulled herself up and stumbled toward the exit. The hall was eerily quiet. As she walked, she noticed students milling about in their usual rush—laughing, carrying books, glancing at their phones. Yet, something was off. She approached a familiar face—her math teacher, Mr. Hawthorne, who was scribbling equations on a whiteboard—but when she waved, he didn’t even flinch. Not a blink, not a twitch. Sam’s stomach twisted. She reached out to tap his shoulder. Still nothing. She looked around. Every student, every professor, even the security guard at the entrance… no one could see her. Her voice caught in her throat when she whispered, “Hello?” Only the echo of her own voice replied. Panic surged. Sam realized she wasn’t just lost. She was invisible. Or… somewhere beyond normal sight. And the missing eight months suddenly felt like a clue, a gap in reality that she had no choice but to fill. Then she noticed it: on the floor, near the grand staircase, a small metallic key gleamed faintly. It had a triangle with a lightning bolt etched through it, and something about it felt… familiar, though she didn’t know why. The key pulsed softly, like it had a heartbeat of its own. Sam bent down, and the world seemed to ripple around her, as if reality itself was waiting for her to make a choice. Somewhere in the hall, a voice whispered her name, faint but urgent. “Sam…” Her heart froze. Whoever—or whatever—was calling her knew more than she did.
