CHAPTER 1
"They will never agree to it. Humanity that is." I stared through the force field window towards the stars and our moon. Beyond , swirls of white caressed a blue marble suspended in black. My eyes widened, and I wondered if I was really here.
Melk's deep, yet not unkind voice spoke. Almost as if he were patiently asking something from a child. ''Why not James?"
''Where to begin?" I looked up into the deep eyes of a man, most women and gay men like myself would call super model hot. The thick purple stripe over his dark hair reminded me of a punker rocker.
Although, they didn't have that kind of music on his planet. Easily over six and a half feet and with muscles the envy of any guy back at my gym. Two lines of broken circled specks and spots went down his uncovered developed chest. Melk's musculature stopped just short of grotesque or parody. Almost like the universe said, 'Here you go. Something functional for a warrior race, but still looks good.'
"You don't know my planet," I said. "They hate men like me.'
"Small?"
"no,'' I said quickly. " Queer. 'You know..... Gay? Homosexual?"
"Homo....sexual?" He repeated it a few times as if saying a word for the first time. For all I knew, he was.
I looked up," Don't tell me they don't have gays in your planet? You all are practically-'
''We don't limit ourselves to you primitive understanding. You are a small species both in mind and body."
"And yet, you still want us?"
He let out a dismissive murmur and he breathed in deep. "Do not..." He eyes went off to the side. I speculate it was the language implant delay," overstep your good fortune. We will compensate your planet. Have we not assisted you too?"
My eyes went back to the force field. Was there something ironic or symbolic about my literal position? Earlier I was dropping toeards black, Moss covered rocks. You'd think it would have zoomed by, but I saw every wave against the sea cliff in slow motion.
Another few seconds and everything would have been over. No memories of Steve's cheating. No thoughts of me without a family. Hell, even the pain of being gay. All gone. All I remember was a bright white beam and flying into a pulsating crystal ship.
Figured I was going to my final judgement. I was never a religious man but flying and twinkling white lights make you wonder.
NO, just aliens.
I smiled to myself. Yeah 'just'
Once the screams stopped, Melk introduced himself as a member of the Volardi. A star spanning empire of hot, gay men. One could be forgiven in thinking I've gone to heaven.
The edge of my lips curled into a frown. I remember reading about 'Dying Dream'. Maybe this wasn't reality. It didn't seem plausible with my history. After years of homophobia, and the inability to get a hot guy, there's an empire full of them? For all I knew this was my brain's way to make my last milliseconds happy.
It's everything I've always wanted. All I had to do was say 'yes'.
Including a family....one with love.
Of course, there's a price for that.
Visuals of me with a full belly filled my head. That wasn't the only way but how they wanted it. Just because I was gay didn't mean a family was impossible. I could adopt or maybe find a female friend and ask a favor.
A big one . That's not like asking for a cup of sugar.
Excuse me, would you mind holding my sperm for a bit? Just enough for it to take hold so you can carry my child?
Now the situations are reversed.
"Tell me again," I said.
Melk's crossed his arms before he frowned. ''You are not dead. We've discussed this... at length. We are not your angels.''
Hopefully not our devils either.
"Why me?"
"Why not you?''
I swallowed hard and collected my thoughts. "Where to start? You are asking me to change my body. Not just that , but to carry an alien in..."
Melk's voice drew out." Mind your prejudices. From our perspective, you are the alien. There are two types of people I the galaxy. Those who are friends with the Volardi and those who have felt the boot."
"Language implant's working fine I see?''
"As will what we implant in you."
His warm hands went on my shoulders and he gripped slow. On earth it was forward. I didn't know how the Volardi interacted with each other beyond some obvious assumptions. His deep voice carried, and I swear I felt it rumble through my body. "My people believe in..."In the force field's reflection."I saw his forehead furrow. "Sarah deputy?"
My eyebrows rose before I got it. "Serendipity?"
"Yes," he said after a length y pause. "The occurrence of events in a happy or beneficial way. When it happened ,we embrace it. It's how we defeated the Jadish, found our way out into the stars, and..." His voice grew solemn. "Met the vile race with no honor." He said their name as if it were a slur , and perhaps it was. "The Gloom. Instead of meeting us in the battlefield of the stars as one warrior to another...they attacked our..."
"Breeding stock?'' I asked. "That is what you're asking me... Earth to do."
He breathed in deeply and in his sharply defined chest muscles pushed out. If he wore a top, he would have ripped it for sure.
"That's a very grotesque ,way of describing our... femeni. " He breathed out fast.
"Curses.''
"No word?"
He shook his head. "Your language is to primitive ." He pointed a finger to himself. "We are first and you are the last."
"Doesn't sound good for us. Who wants to be last? First sounds better.''
"No you don't understand . It...the births. They begin with us. The men like me- those that like you - small and give birth."
My eyes widened ." Alpha and Omega? Its the first and the last letters in the Greek alphabet. Alpha is first, and Omega is last." My lips curled into a smile. "I am the Alpha and the Omega ,the first and the last, the Beginning and the End."
