Chapter 1 Rebirth in Rage
The same year the doctors gave me a terminal cancer diagnosis, my daughter, Julia White, entered a prestigious society by marrying Charlie Grant, a powerful, wealthy man.
I believed Julia's future would be filled with joy and fulfillment. But just a year later, the ghost of Charlie's past, his first love Vivian Scott, returned. Julia was plunged into despair, and despite being seven months pregnant, Vivian forced her to drink strong liquor, pushing her further into the depths of depression.
My heart couldn't take the injustice, and I passed away in a fit of rage.
When I awoke, I found myself possessing the form of Charlie's mother. Filled with resolve, I stormed into the luxurious VIP room.
Vivian met me with a sugary, deceitful grin. "Isabella, what brings you here?"
*****
The room plunged into silence as all eyes fixed on me.
Vivian beamed widely. "Did Charlie send you to fetch me?"
I ignored her and made my way directly to the couch.
There, heavily pregnant Julia was pinned down by a group, booze splattered all over her, forcing her to drink.
"Let her go!"
The ringleader, clad in a floral shirt, paused, instinctively looking to Vivian for direction.
Vivian sidled up to me, looping her arm through mine. "Isabella, Julia lost a bet, so she's being penalized."
Smack!
I landed a slap on Vivian's cheek. "Be quiet!" I snapped. "Julia's the rightful daughter-in-law of the Grant family. Who do you think you are?"
Vivian's head whipped to the side, her expression one of utter shock.
I didn't bother acknowledging her, my gaze unyielding. "I repeat, release her."
Vivian's eyes filled with tears, clearly straining to mask her distress. "Julia agreed to this. Besides, some alcohol isn't harmful to a pregnant woman."
"Some? That was an entire glass of whiskey!"
The image of Julia being coerced into drinking hard liquor fueled my fury.
I glanced at Vivian's own conspicuously pregnant belly. "You're expecting too. Why not drink in Julia's place?"
"How could you suggest that?" Vivian's face was a mask of horror as she instinctively retreated.
"Mom, what are you doing?" Charlie's voice unexpectedly echoed from the doorway.
Vivian rushed over, her eyes puffy and red from crying. "We were just fooling around with Julia. We never thought Isabella would get so worked up."
"Mom, we just had a few drinks and it got a bit silly. You're blowing this way out of proportion." Charlie wrapped Vivian in his arms, calming her with whispered reassurances.
The entire time, he didn't even glance at Julia.
Seeing him act like this made my heart grow colder by the second.
He was the man Julia had bet her future on.
He was the son-in-law I had longed for, praying on my deathbed that he would bring joy to Julia.
I said sharply, "I'll say this just once today. If anything bad happens to Julia or her baby, I won't let you off the hook!"
