Chapter 1: The Discovery
The music blasting from the car speakers was supposed to mean freedom, but to Damian, it sounded like a funeral march.
While his four best friends bounced in their seats, laughing and talking excitedly about the weekend vacation ahead, Damian's mind was suffocating. His father's manufacturing company had gone completely bankrupt two days earlier. The debts ran into millions, and angry calls from creditors had already begun. If they couldn't find the money soon, his family would lose everything.
He had kept the painful truth a secret from his friends. His pride wouldn't allow him to admit that his world was falling apart.
When the car finally pulled up near the remote vacation cabin, the others spilled onto the grass, cheering.
"Damian, come on! Grab the cooler!" David yelled, throwing an arm around Chloe, who was already filming a t****k video.
"I'll catch up with you guys. Let me stretch my legs," Damian replied, forcing a smile.
He needed to escape the noise. With his mind overwhelmed by worry, he walked away from the cabin and into the thick bush, his boots crunching against the dry leaves.
How am I supposed to get that kind of money? Where do I even start?
Lost in his dark thoughts, Damian failed to notice the sudden change in the terrain.
Thud!
His right boot struck something solid buried deep in the dirt. A sharp pain shot up his leg, causing him to stumble and fall hard onto his knees.
"Damn it!" he cursed, turning around to kick whatever had tripped him.
But it wasn't a rock.
Through the loose soil and tangled weeds, a dark metallic glint caught the afternoon sunlight. Damian bent down, his heart suddenly racing for a reason he couldn't explain. He used his bare hands to scrape away the dirt until his fingers touched cold metal.
It was an iron box. It looked old and heavy, and a thick, rusted padlock secured its lid.
Damian glanced over his shoulder. The distant laughter of his friends faded into the background, leaving him surrounded by an eerie silence.
Driven by desperate curiosity, he picked up a heavy, sharp stone and began striking the rusted lock.
CLANG! CLANG!
On the fourth strike, the ancient lock snapped and fell into the dirt.
Damian's hands trembled as he lifted the heavy iron lid.
His breath caught in his throat.
His eyes widened.
The box wasn't empty. It was packed tightly with neat stacks of crisp, uncirculated hundred-dollar bills.
One hundred million dollars.
Right there beneath his feet.
For a whole minute, Damian couldn't move. He could barely breathe. The financial crisis threatening his family suddenly seemed to have a solution.
Panic and adrenaline took over. He slammed the lid shut, struggled to lift the heavy iron box, and hurried through the bush toward the cabin, shouting for his friends.
"Guys! Guys, come out right now!"
The four of them rushed out of the cabin, looking confused and annoyed.
"Damian, what's wrong with you? Why are you shouting?" David asked.
"Inside the bush... You won't believe what I found," Damian gasped, his face pale and covered in sweat. "Follow me. Right now!"
They hurried back into the trees, pushing branches aside until they reached the patch of freshly disturbed earth.
Damian dropped to his knees, dragged the box forward, and threw open the lid.
The silence that followed was deafening.
Chloe and Lily gasped, covering their mouths, while David and Austin froze, their eyes fixed on the mountain of cash.
"Is this... real?" Austin whispered, reaching out with a trembling hand.
"We can't stay here," Damian said, lowering his voice to a fierce whisper as he glanced around the dark woods.
A terrifying realization struck him.
Money like this didn't simply appear in the ground. Someone had put it there.
And whoever owned it might come looking for it.
"Grab it. Get to the car. We're leaving right now."
Within minutes, the iron box was loaded into the trunk. The engine roared to life, and the tires spat gravel into the air as they sped away from the vacation cabin, leaving the forest behind.
They thought they were driving toward freedom.
They had no idea they had just started a nightmare.
