The drive back to town was silent, the tension between them palpable. Elena’s thoughts raced as she tried to make sense of everything Damian had revealed. The more she learned about Maya’s plans, the deeper she felt herself being pulled into a twisted game—a game she never wanted to be a part of but now couldn’t escape.
Damian dropped her off outside her apartment, his hand lingering on the steering wheel. "Stay alert," he warned. "Maya's unpredictable. I don’t know when or how she’ll make her move, but she will."
Elena nodded, though her stomach churned with unease. "I’ll be careful."
She climbed out of the car and watched as Damian drove away, disappearing into the night. The moment she was alone, the weight of everything came crashing down on her. Maya was out there, waiting, planning—and Damian, the one person she had started to trust, was tied to it all.
As she stepped into her apartment, her phone buzzed. Elena’s heart raced as she looked at the screen: Unknown number.
Her blood turned to ice.
"You think you can trust him?" The text read. "Think again."
Elena’s hand shook as she stared at the message, her heart pounding in her chest. She had no doubt who it was from.
Maya.
The room felt suffocating all of a sudden, the walls closing in around her. She was being watched—stalked by a threat that was always a step ahead. Elena’s mind raced as she quickly locked her doors and windows, the feeling of unease growing stronger with every passing second.
Maya was playing her again. She always had been.
