Chapter 8:The trap

The next morning, Elena felt the weight of sleeplessness dragging her down as she made her way through town. She needed to think, to clear her mind, but the city felt too small, too closed in. Every face she passed seemed suspicious, every look a reminder that Maya could be lurking anywhere. The uncertainty gnawed at her, and she couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched.

She met Jess for coffee later that day, hoping for some semblance of normalcy. But the moment Jess sat down across from her, Elena knew she couldn’t pretend everything was fine.

"You look awful," Jess said bluntly, concern etched on her face.

Elena forced a weak smile. "Thanks."

"What’s going on?" Jess leaned in closer, her voice dropping. "Is this about that guy? The one you’ve been seeing?"

Elena hesitated, then nodded. "It’s... complicated."

Jess raised an eyebrow. "Complicated how?"

Elena took a deep breath. "It’s Maya. She’s back."

The look of shock on Jess’s face was immediate. "Maya? As in that Maya? I thought she was gone for good!"

"Me too," Elena said, her voice heavy with frustration. "But she’s not. And she’s not here for a friendly reunion."

Jess's expression darkened, her concern deepening. "Elena, what’s going on? What does she want?"

"I don’t know," Elena admitted. "But Damian—" She hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "He’s involved. Somehow."

Jess frowned. "And you trust him?"

Elena didn’t know how to answer. "I want to. But Maya... she’s been pulling strings I didn’t even know were there."

Jess reached across the table, grabbing Elena’s hand. "Listen, whatever’s going on, you can’t do this alone. Maya’s dangerous, we know that. But if you don’t trust Damian, if there’s even the smallest doubt... you need to get out of this before it’s too late."

Elena nodded, but the truth was, she didn’t know if she could walk away. The danger was too close, too personal. And despite everything, a part of her still wanted to believe that Damian was on her side.
