The room spun as Elena stood frozen, the phone pressed to her ear. The silence that followed Maya’s words felt suffocating, a dark weight settling over her chest.
"You’re lying," Elena managed to choke out, though even as the words left her lips, she wasn’t sure she believed them. Her mind raced, piecing together fragments of conversations, fleeting looks, and the unshakable feeling that something had been wrong from the start.
"Am I?" Maya’s voice was smooth, dripping with satisfaction. "Why don’t you ask Damian about me? About us. I’m sure he’d love to explain."
The line went dead before Elena could respond. She dropped the phone onto the table, her heart pounding so loudly in her ears that it drowned out the rational part of her brain. Her thoughts spiraled—who was Damian really, and how did he know Maya? Could this be some kind of trap, or worse, was it all connected to the betrayal that had torn her life apart years ago?
In the next few chapters, I’ll further develop the tension between Elena, Damian, and Maya, revealing more about their backstories and setting up the emotional and psychological conflict. Damian’s motivations will remain ambiguous for a while longer, and the theme of betrayal will deepen as Elena tries to unravel the connection between them.
