Elena barely slept that night. The sound of Maya’s voice replayed in her head like a broken record, dragging her back into memories she’d spent years trying to bury. Her betrayal, the lies, the way Maya had twisted everything until Elena didn’t know who to trust anymore. And now, Maya was back—like a ghost rising from the past to finish what she started.
She poured herself a cup of coffee the next morning, her hands still trembling from the shock of last night. The daylight filtering through the windows did little to chase away the darkness that clung to her. She needed answers—about Maya, about Damian, about why they were suddenly both here in Willow Creek, after all these years. But a part of her wasn’t sure she wanted to know.
Elena stood in front of the mirror in her bathroom, staring at her reflection. Her hazel eyes were rimmed with exhaustion, her dark hair falling in loose waves around her shoulders. She was different now, stronger than she’d been back then. But Maya had a way of making her feel like a frightened girl again, lost and unsure.
Her phone buzzed on the counter. This time, it wasn’t Maya. It was Jess.
"Hey," Elena answered, her voice still thick with the weight of sleeplessness.
"You sound like death," Jess replied bluntly. "What happened?"
Elena hesitated. Jess had been there for her during the fallout with Maya, but even she didn’t know the full story. Elena had kept parts of it hidden, ashamed of how deeply she’d let herself be manipulated.
"I saw someone last night," Elena finally said, sinking down onto the edge of her bed. "Someone I never thought I’d see again."
"Maya?" Jess’s voice was sharp now, the name like a dagger.
Elena nodded, then remembered Jess couldn’t see her. "Yeah. She’s back."
"Jesus," Jess muttered. "Are you okay?"
"I don’t know," Elena admitted. "She said something about the guy I met last night—Damian. Said they knew each other. I don’t know what to believe."
Jess was quiet for a moment. "Look, you know Maya’s toxic. She’ll say anything to mess with your head. But if you think this Damian guy is connected to her… maybe you should find out for sure before you get too involved."
"I wasn’t planning on getting involved," Elena said quickly, though the words felt hollow. There was something about Damian that drew her in, something she couldn’t explain.
"Just be careful, okay?" Jess’s voice softened. "I don’t want you going through that again."
Elena hung up, her thoughts swirling. She needed to confront Damian, but how could she ask him about something like this without seeming paranoid? Without letting him know how deeply Maya had scarred her?
She finished her coffee, determination hardening in her chest. She couldn’t let fear control her again. Not this time. If Maya thought she could waltz back into her life and tear it apart, she was wrong.
