Chapter 5:The game Begins

585 Words
Later that evening, Elena found herself back at the Raven’s Nest, hoping to see Damian again. She told herself it was just to ask questions, to get to the truth. But deep down, she knew it was more than that. There was an electricity between them, a pull that went beyond logic or reason. The bar was busier tonight, the noise of chatter and clinking glasses filling the space. Elena spotted Damian almost immediately, seated at the same table he’d occupied the night before. He looked up as she approached, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her pulse quicken. "Elena," he said, his voice smooth as silk. "I was wondering if I’d see you again." She sat down across from him, trying to steady her nerves. "I’m not sure why I’m here," she admitted, though it wasn’t entirely true. He leaned back in his chair, studying her with a gaze that felt like it could see right through her. "I think you know exactly why you’re here." Elena swallowed hard, her mouth suddenly dry. There was something about him, something dangerous and magnetic all at once. "How do you know Maya?" The question hung in the air between them, heavy with implication. Damian’s expression didn’t change, but a flicker of something—recognition, maybe—passed through his eyes. He took a sip of his drink before answering, his voice measured. "Maya and I have… history." Elena’s heart sank. History. The word was loaded with meaning, with all the things he wasn’t saying. She could feel the walls closing in around her, the past creeping up like a shadow. "What kind of history?" Damian sighed, leaning forward, his elbows resting on the table. "It’s complicated. Maya and I were involved a long time ago, before everything went wrong." Elena’s mind raced, trying to piece together the puzzle. "What do you mean, ‘before everything went wrong’? What happened?" He hesitated, his gaze dropping to the table for a moment before meeting hers again. "Maya has a way of manipulating people. She… used me. I didn’t realize it at the time, but she was pulling strings, setting me up for something I didn’t want any part of." Elena’s stomach twisted. It was the same old story, the same pattern she had fallen into with Maya years ago. She could feel the weight of it pressing down on her, the betrayal still fresh even after all this time. "Why are you here now, Damian? Is this some kind of game?" His jaw tightened, his expression darkening. "I’m not playing games, Elena. I came here to get away from her, not to drag anyone else into it. But she has a way of finding you, even when you don’t want to be found." Elena wanted to believe him. There was a sincerity in his voice, a rawness that made her heart ache. But she had been burned before, and she couldn’t afford to be naïve. "What does she want with me?" Elena asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Damian looked at her for a long moment, his gaze softening. "I don’t know. But whatever it is, it’s not good. Maya doesn’t do anything without a reason. She’s dangerous, Elena. More dangerous than you realize." The words hung between them like a warning, but instead of filling her with fear, they only made her more determined. If Maya wanted to play games, Elena would play. But this time, she wasn’t going to lose.
