Xavier drove the Ford pickup truck up the dirt road, being careful not to hit the big rocks that made the makeshift border of the road, warning drivers of the runoff. He shifted gears before the climb up the mountainside. The weather person reported that the heat index would climb. The dry heat and the lack of rain made the air unbearable and caused dangerous fire conditions. Some roads had been closed a few miles back because of forest fires in the Okanagan-Wenatchee forest. Xavier looked at the truck’s temperature gauge and noticed the temperature had risen to one hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Subconsciously, while his arm gripped the steering wheel, he massaged his right shoulder to see if area he had bruised during the move had gotten better. It wasn’t sore anymore from the box of books
