Maddie’s POV:

I was terrified, I tried stepping back but she yanked me by my collar and had me gasping for air.

The silent guy tugged her away from me, ‘Oh my God Veronica. Why’d you do that? What if you killed her?’.

‘Then he’ll get a new one’, she said angrily.

She could dish out insults but the moment one gets thrown at her, she enters instant kill mode.

‘But for real, he just got her. He’ll be pissed if she’s bruised already’, the silent guy.

I had fallen on the ground and I didn’t think my body would respond to me telling me to move after what just happened.

‘Oh alright Nicholas. Gosh! You worry too much’, Veronica said. Her eyes were back to normal and her fangs had reduced.

The silent guy, Nicholas came towards me and knelt down to look at my neck, he held my neck with his cold hands and I had to resist the urge of moving away. ‘She has a bruise. Perfect’, he said sarcastically. ‘Just what Darren needs to see. You really need to work on your temper Veronica’.

Veronica huffed, ‘Next time a weak thing like her will learn not to speak to me in such manner’.

I really wanted to tell her she started it but once again I just shut up. At least I learnt one thing from here, and that’s; shutting up can save you sometimes.

‘But we really need to fix her before Darren returns’, Nicholas said.

Fix me before Darren returns, what do this people take me for? A toy?

‘Fine’. Veronica said. ‘I’ll get a maid to get ice’. She looked to the kitchen and said, ‘Maid!’.

How dumb could this lady be? Did she really think a maid would just come out like that.

But to my greatest surprise a maid actually came out. ‘Yes Miss Veronica?’, the maid said to her.

‘Get some ice for Darren’s pet’, she said.

‘Yes Miss Veronica’. She went into the kitchen to get the ice.

‘What’s taking Darren so long anyways?Didn’t he just go to get some snacks’, Veronica whined as if she was a princess in distress waiting for her Prince Charming. Yuck.

Not that I gave a s**t, but what’s someone like Darren actually doing with someone like her.

Darren finally came back, I couldn’t believe I said this but I was happy to see him. The smile on his face immediately changed when he saw me on the floor.

‘What did you do Veronica?’, Darren asked her.

‘I didn’t do anything. I just dragged her collar a little and she fell’, she lied then rolled her eyes.

Just dragged my collar… that b***h.

The maid finally returned with the ice and then Darren noticed the injury on my neck.

‘Come on Veronica’, Darren said. ‘Come with me Maddie’, he commanded. I immediately stood up and went in front of him. ‘Show Veronica and Nicholas around. I’ll be back’, Darren said to the maid.

‘Yes Master’

‘Are you really leaving us for your pet Darren?’, Veronica questioned.

‘I’ll be quick’, Darren replied as he moved in front of me. He walked and I knew I needed to follow immediately. He went upstairs and then we went into one of the rooms.

Darren slammed the door immediately we entered. ‘What the hell happened there?’, he asked sharply.

I stood there for a second too shocked to answer, the hair I spent all day doing was now shaggy. ‘Your girlfriend’s a b***h!’, I said without thinking then I looked away. I also couldn’t take it anymore because she really was. She did as she pleased just because.

‘Language’, he said as he went to a drawer to get something. ‘And also she’s not my girlfriend. She’s my sister’, he finished.

‘What?’, I didn’t notice when this slipped out from my mouth but to be honest I was kind of glad.

‘Yeah, Veronica is my older sister. Well half sister. Not like it’s any of your business’, he said as he finally found what he was looking for in the drawer. It was a lotion and a pair of gloves. He came towards me and went for my neck. He removed my collar to check the bruise I had. I could feel his cold hands on my warm skin. ‘It’s really not anything serious’, as he packed a part of my hair and handed it to me. He put on the gloves and then he poured a little lotion on his hand. The bruise hurt a little when he first touched it. ‘Sorry’, he said. I think that was the first time I heard him use that word.

‘The lotion should make you feel better and should heal the wound’, he said as he applied it. And it really did. Immediately his hand touched my neck, it kind of felt better. Because of the lotion not because he touched my neck. He was finally done applying it then he sealed the lotion and dropped it on the table.

‘So what really happened?’, Darren asked again.

‘I already told you. Your girlfriend… I mean your sister’s a…’, he glared at me before I could complete it and I knew what to do. Shut up. ‘But for real. It was like she was trying to provoke me and the moment I resisted she attacked me’.

Darren removed the gloves from his hands. ‘Veronica’s a little tough to deal with’, he said. Thank God he knows. ‘But she means well’, he continued.

Wait was he really about to take her side? How did she mean well? That she wanted to take a bite off me to tell her brother whether I tasted well or not, wow, she really meant well.

‘Alright come on. You need to go and apologize to her’, Darren said.

‘What?’, I screamed. Darren had been making a little sense today but right now he just took a quick detour.

‘It’s like you said, Veronica provoked you but she didn’t do anything until you shot back at her’, he said.

I was furious and I couldn’t believe he just said this. Yes I shot back, why wouldn’t I, that lady pushed me to the wall and then through it.

‘I won’t’, I said then huffed.

‘Maddie. I said you go down there and apologize’, Darren said angrily.

I took a deep breath and even almost let out a tear. ‘Fine’, I sniffled.

He took a deep breath too, ‘Alright. Let’s get back down then. And if she tries to annoy you again. Just avoid her’, he said.

I hissed and looked away.

We went down the stairs and back into the living room. I looked the other way throughout. We finally got to the living room where Nicholas and Duchess Dracula were seated.

‘Maddie has something to say to you Veronica’, Darren said to them.

‘Veronica has something to say to her too’, Nicholas said to us. Wait, did he get her to apologize too? Was she Nicholas’s pet? I knew that wasn’t possible but it was fun to think about.

‘Uhm uhm’, Darren coughed.

‘Oh. I’m sorry for calling you stupid’, I said. I knew I didn’t have to add the stupid part but I felt like I needed to to piss her off and judging by her face, it seemed like it worked.

‘Veronica?’, Nicholas said to Veronica who was still frowning.

‘I’m sorry’, she said which made me smirk a little. ‘That your pet speaks without thinking and doesn’t know her place’, she finished. My smirk had turn upside down.

‘C’mon Veronica?’, Nicholas said.

‘What? She’s a pet, and a human. Why should I have to apologize to her?’, Veronica said.

Nicholas and Darren sighed and didn’t say a word.

‘Maddie just became a pet. She doesn’t…’, Darren tried to say but was interrupted by Veronica.

‘Doesn’t what? Know how to respect?’. Veronica stood up and walked towards me. ‘If you don’t let respect guide you, At least let fear’, she said to me, she was really close with me with her bloody eyes and her fangs out.

‘Okay let’s just drop this whole thing’, Nicholas finally said.

‘Sure’, Veronica said as she went back and sat down. ‘Just get a better pet next time Darren’, she added.

The tension in the air was still the same. The maid finally came and lowered it a little, ‘Food is ready’, she said.

‘Finally I’m starving’, Veronica said and then we all headed to the dining table.

We got to the dining table and Veronica sat at my spot. She probably didn’t know but it still made me angry. I huffed then went to sit somewhere else on the table. Once again they were all types of foods on the table.

‘Dig in’, Darren said and then we all began eating.

After a while Veronica finally said, ‘So Damian. Father’s going to be throwing a party for the business tomorrow and he told me to invite you’.

‘Oh wow. Okay, I’ll be there’, he said.

We finished eating and then the maids came to clear the table.

‘Don’t you have any blood around here?’, Veronica asked Darren.

My eyes widened, how would he tell her he drinks animal blood? Would she be alright with it?

She began laughing, ‘Just kidding Darebear. And I’m surprised she knows’, she said as she looked at me.

Shit, she played me.

Darren sighed and even though I didn’t say anything I knew I messed up.

‘We should get going’, Veronica said. ‘Right Nicholas?’.

‘Yeah’, Nicholas replied.

They all left the dining table and went towards the door. I was the only one left in the table, well and the maids who were clearing up. Plates were clanking and cups clinking, I couldn’t take it anymore and then I went to the living room so I would go up to my room.

‘You shouldn’t be telling your pet things like that’, I overheard Veronica saying to Darren.

‘I didn’t tell her’, Darren argued.

‘If you say so’, Veronica replied. ‘But you really need to treat her more with an iron fist. Don’t forget that she’s just your pet.’, she continued. Veronica sighted me and then smiled.

‘You should bring her to the party’, she said looking at me, then she and Nicholas left.
